Reichert piano concert at FLC Nov. 10, 2000 By Charlie Langdon
Israeli pianist Aviram Reichert will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Roshong Recital Hall at Fort Lewis College. His performance will be the fourth in the 2000-01 FLC Artist-in-Residence Program. A favorite with Durango audiences as a result of his many performances at Music in the Mountains, Reichert is a frequent soloist with all the leading orchestras in his native country, including the Jerusalem Broadcast Symphony Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He won the Bronze Medal at the 10th Van Cliburn International Competition in 1997, only months after he had been awarded the top prize in the first Dong-A International Piano Competition in Seoul, Korea. In addition to his concert performance, Reichert will conduct a free piano master class from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Roshong Hall. The class is open to students and teachers of piano. For further information on the master class, call Lisa Campi at 247-7134 or 375-9529. The Artist-in-Residence Program was started in 1995 by a small group of Durango residents who volunteered their time, financial support and expertise. The program is intended to offer Four Corners residents the opportunity to experience high-quality artistic performances, as well as to interact with artists representing a variety of genres. Furthermore, the program enhances the educational opportunities of FLC and Durango 9-R students by providing master classes, as well as performances in informal settings.

Concert Hall grand setting for festival orchestra July 31, 2000 By Judith Reynolds
Special to the Herald An embarrassment of riches – Saturday night’s performance in the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College featured two conductors and three big works: Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Poulenc’s Concerto in D Minor for two pianos, and Saint-Saens’ majestic Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, the "Organ Symphony." Thursday, Friday concerts were also outstanding The Thursday and Friday Music in the Mountains concerts also offered memorable performances. Thursday’s program in the Purgatory performance presented works by Haydn, Ravel and Copland. However, the night belonged to Israeli pianist Aviram Reichert, who ignited the audience with a vigorous reading of Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Like a jet fueled rocket, Reichert played with an intensity that never let up. By the time he reached the finale, Reichert had established a perfect thrust of musical necessity. It was as if he, the orchestra, and the audience were on a launch pad lifting off. I’m serious. People around me marked the urgency of the music in a variety of ways. One woman down the row rocked her green plastic chair with such muscularity I thought she’d go overboard before the pianist did.

Piano Gallery Reaches Finals for National Steinway Award Steinway Piano Gallery Underwrites "JAZZ" A Film By Ken Burns 12/20/00 - NAPLES, FL "Jazz music objectifies America," says trumpeter Wynton Marsalis at the outset of Ken Burns' 10-part documentary, JAZZ . "It's an art form that can give us a painless way of understanding ourselves." In the hands of this acclaimed filmmaker, JAZZ , is a journey across an American landscape divided by war, segregated by race, united through swing and dance, and ultimately redeemed through this most American of art forms. "Jazz," the drummer Art Blakey liked to say, "washes away the dust of everyday life." With 75 interviews, more than 500 pieces of music, 2,400 stills and over 2,000 archival film clips - many rare and never before seen - the series follows the growth and development of jazz from the gritty streets of New Orleans to the Lincoln Gardens on Chicago's Southside where Louis Armstrong first won fame, from Prohibition-era speakeasies to the wide-open clubs of Kansas City. The Steinway Piano Gallery of Naples helped bring the program to Southwest Florida. The program originally aired in January and is being rebroadcast in February.
