All summer long
Interlochen Arts Festival's summer lineup includes 26 new acts
Neeme Jarvi By NANCY SUNDSTROM
Special to the Record-Eagle
Spring may be returning to northern Michigan, but it feels more like Christmas.
Interlochen Arts Festival has lined up its summer slate of concerts, and under the tree this year are packages from Hootie and the Blowfish, Shawn Mullins, Bruce Hornsby, B.B. King, Debbie Reynolds, Faith Hill, Chris Isaak, Dwight Yoakam, Neville Brothers, Lyle Lovett, Anne Murray, Chicago, Shawn Colvin, John Tesh, Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, to name just a few.
They head up an impressive array of guest artists who will make the 1999 Interlochen Arts Festival last "All Summer Long." Interlochen Center for the Arts students, faculty and staff will also perform in concerts, theater and dance productions and visual arts exhibits to make for more than 500 events during the season.
Interlochen President Edward Downing said the "All Summer Long" theme reflects both a schedule that opens early - June 11 with good-time rockers Hootie and the Blowfish and new sensation Shawn Mullins ("Lullabye") - and concludes Sept. 1 with new-age showman John Tesh, as well as a strategic effort to bring in new and diverse guest artists.

Symphonic sound
Fernando Rossano was born in Rome, but moved to Paris in 1988 to continue his musical studies. The result is a pianist with a clean, energetic approach to the classical style, a well-defined romanticism and an ability to bring a symphonic sound to a work such as Ravel's La Valse. For his opening-round in Fort Worth he will take a heavy classical-era focus with Beethoven's Sonata in E-flat, Opus 31, No.3 and Haydn's Sonata in E minor, with Liszt's Mephisto Waltz No. 1 to test his bravura. Classical Music: PSO and Y import a cast of great players Friday, September 10, 1999 By Robert Croan, Post-Gazette Music Critic The classical music season will start with a bang this year, when Mariss Jansons leads the Pittsburgh Symphony, Mendelssohn Choir and a cast of world-famous soloists in Arnold Schoenberg's mammoth oratorio, "Gurrelieder." It may come as no surprise that almost everything to follow by the Symphony as well as other local organizations will be comparatively tame and predictable. Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste will, however, conduct a work by his countryman, Magnus Lindberg in October; and the Emerson String Quartet will play a 1998 opus by Ellen Taafe Zwilich. As for big-name soloists, the Symphony lists violinist Gil Shahan among its guests, while the Y will present pianist Emanuel Ax in recital. Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble is awaiting its new music director, Gil Rose, while embroiled in a dispute over whether the new director has the right to re-audition longtime union musicians, who had been working under an informal arrangement with PNME founder David Stock. At the other end of the chronological spectrum, the Renaissance and Baroque Society has an impressive lineup that includes not only big ensembles such as The King's Noyse but solo recitals including harpsichordist Peter Sykes playing Bach's "Goldberg Variations" complete.

Last modified at 5:49 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 1998
A high school German teacher-turned-concert pianist who captured the 1997 Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be featured in a concert at Grand Valley State University. Jon Nakamatsu will perform in a concert at 8 p.m. in the Louis Armstrong Theater on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Grand Valley is the only Michigan venue that has featured all three 1997 medalists of the Van Cliburn Piano Competition. Bronze medalist, Aviram Reichert of Israel kicked off the series in October 1997 and silver medalist Yakov Kasman of Russia performed in January. Nakamatsu, a native Californian who has no formal conservatory background, was the first American since 1982 to receive the Gold Medal. Among the prizes he was awarded were two years of international concert engagements and career management, a solo recording distributed worldwide on the Harmonia Mundi label, and a recital debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City. During the summer of 1997, Nakamatsu was invited to replace Vladimir Ashkenazy in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as soloist with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berline, and performed at Tanglewood with the Boston Pops, the Klavier Festival Ruhr in Germany and the Montpellier Festival in France. He has also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the New World Symphony and symphony orchestras of Dallas, Detroit, San Francisco and Milwaukee.
