Professor Lester's best-known research addressed wage determination and minimum wages. In the 1940s, he developed the "range theory of wages," which recognized that individuals in similar jobs were often paid very differently. He used this theory to explain why higher minimum wages might not have the dire employment consequences predicted by their opponents. ...

In searching for Scriabin's own recordings, I found a MMD article with the string "Scriabin performs his own compositions in 1905" and, if I don't understand incorrectly, these old recordings have been issued on LP (and I think, furthermore, that some very rare rolls such as Sonatas #2 and #3 could be found there). Live New Releases News ... Basin Street Records 5th Anniversary Party Julian Priester Benefit: May 16, 2001 - Bimbo's 365 Club, San Francisco, CA by Bill Bennett
Trombonist Julian Priester's contributions and collaborations to and within the world of jazz have earned him not just the respect and admiration, but also the affection of those he has touched along the way. And so there was a sense of relief and celebration in the air when Priester returned to performing, at a benefit to defray some of the costs of the liver transplant he underwent last year. To be more accurate, the ingredients were relief, celebration and a huge helping of talent-including a reunion of the legendary Herbie Hancock Sextet from the '70s. The evening opened with a sextet led by drummer Babatunde Lea, featuring Wayne Wallace, Angela Wellman and Danny Armstrong on trombones, Glen Pearson on piano and Jeff Chambers on bass. Wallace's sly plunger solo led into a beautiful "In a Sentimental Mood," which built up to an ebullient "March of the Jazz Guerrillas," on which they were joined by the man of the hour.

On Campus - Stories November 30, 2001 - Vol. 54, No. 25 Two students compete for Rhodes Scholarships Two Drake University students have been named Iowa state finalists in the competition for Rhodes Scholarships. They are Ajenai Clemmons, a senior from Greenwood Village, Colo., and Zachary Nunn, a senior from Altoona. "It's rare for Drake to have two students selected as state finalists for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships," said Julian Archer, professor of history and director of post-graduate fellowships at Drake. "Having two finalists shows that Drake is attracting exceptional students and that our faculty members are doing an excellent job of refining the intellect of the students who come here." As part of the state-level competition, Clemmons and Nunn will be interviewed by the Iowa Selection Committee for Rhodes Scholarships next Wednesday in Des Moines. The student selected by the committee to represent Iowa will advance to the district competition. Each district's selection committee may elect up to four Rhodes Scholars. Iowa is part of district six, which also encompasses Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
