Herbie Hancock (born 1940) Pianist, Composer, and Bandleader. Herbie Hancock's Dad on a picnic with Gerri Oliver and Gerri's cousin. Herbie Hancock See: http://afgen.com/herb.html Herbie Hancock was born April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, into a musical household. His musical training began with the study of the piano at age 7. Evidence of Hancock's musical prowess appeared took little time to emerge; he gave his first public performance two years after beginning and by 11 he had performed Mozart's D Major Piano Concerto with the Chicago Symphony. Although during his early years Hancock was encouraged by his parents to listen to classical music, his interest turned to jazz in his high school years. Also, in high school Hancock's interest in electronics emerged and he decided to attend Grinnel College and Major in electrical engineering, but in his second year of college, he changed his major to music. After graduating from college, Hancock, age 20, went to New York with trumpeter Donald Byrd who heard him play in Chicago. While in New York Byrd introduced Hancock to Blue Note Records executives. This led to work with various established jazz artists and later Hancock's his first solo album, Taking Off, which included appearances by Freddie Hubbard and Dexter Gordan. Contained on this album was Hancock's first top 10 hit Watermelon Man. It was not long before Hancock got the attention of the legendary Miles Davis, who extended an invitation to Hancock to join his new group. With this group Hancock began to pioneer what would later be called fusion as he, through his original compositions, melded ideas of funk and rock with jazz. Hancock took this opportunity to introduce himself to synthesizers. Headhunters (1973) was the first album on which Hancock used a synthesizer. Up to that point his work was acoustic with the exception of a Rhodes Electric Piano. Hancock purchased his first synthesizer, an Arp String Ensemble, the same year he made Headhunters and incorporated it into the album. The album, which became the largest-selling jazz album in history contained "Chameleon," another of Hancock's crossover hits. Incorporating synthesizers at this pace was mitigated by Hancock's experience with electronics and aptitude for the subject. After a few years, Hancock returned to his roots as an acoustic pianist with the V.S.O.P. Quintet, a recreation of Miles' band (without Miles), and several other Jazz Artists.

New life for Mansion Hotel Gig top
From this month the programming for the long running Mansion Hotel gig is being organised by LCM graduates Jami Sheriff and Riaan Vosloo. Earlier this year there was some uncertainty for the future of the Tuesday jazz night as audience numbers had fallen. This is fairly common for gigs in January and February. Fortunately attendance recovered in March / April to secure the managements committment to continue supporting the night. The gig was set up in 1996 by LCM graduate Julian Wellington and sponsored by Dave Walker of All Brass and Woodwind. For the first year All Brass and Woodwind solely financed the gig! For this issue I asked Dave and Julian about their original idea for setting up the gig. LCM graduate Julian, who now runs his own music business, Hall Place Studios, said "It seemed like an idyllic setting to put on jazz".

The principle music on this debut CD, Nikki Yeoh's two-part suite Quiet Freedom , is the outfit's most ambitious project. The brilliant young pianist was commissioned to write the work over a two year period in 1998-99, and produced an engaging and testing piece which combines classic big band disciplines with a distinctly contemporary feel. She achieves structural unity largely through rhythm rather than complex ensemble writing, although there is much intricate textural play to keep the band on their toes. The lithe grooves provide a launch pad for the soloists (Yeoh limits herself to conducting).....Julian Arguelles's atmospheric

His Variations de Concert , Op.1 mark his debut as a composer and date from 1906. Following the dramatic opening, Bonnet introduces the main theme of the work, proceeding to treat the listener to a series of skilful variations. The intervention of a pedal cadenza of virtuosic proportions makes demands on both performer and instrument before moving the work to a triumphant conclusion. Three Pieces for Musical Clocks by Joseph Haydn allow the listener to appreciate the quieter registers of the instrument. For manuals only, these delightful miniatures form a short three movement suite. Flanked by two allegros in C major, the middle movement offers contrast in the form of a gentle C major minuet.

Brad Turner Quartet
featuring Seamus Blake
Live at the Cellar
Maximum Jazz Vancouver's Brad Turner has hit the big time as a member of Metalwood, the Juno award-winning groove jazz band that in May 2001 released its first CD for a major label Universal Music Group Canada. But since 1996, Turner has also been recording contemporary jazz albums under his own name, featuring his own material. Live at the Cellar, recorded in January 2000, is the latest of these. It teams Turner, on trumpet, and his rhythm section of Bruno Hubert (Rhodes piano), Andre Lachance (bass) and Dylan van der Schyff (drums) with tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake, a former Vancouverite, for a set of five Turner compositions and two tunes by Thelonious Monk and Lee Morgan. The five Turner originals highlight his development as a composer. They are, as a group, his strongest recorded under his own name so far.

Jazz CDs - March 2002
Let's start off with two CDs from a top Hammond B3 organist carrying on the tradition of Jimmy Smith... Tony Monaco Trio - Burnin' Grooves - Summit Records DCD 304:
Tony Monaco - Master Chops T - Summit Records DCD 325:
Monaco's first commercial album last year was well-received and deserved it. It was quintessential organ-guitar-drums trio and really rocked. B3 masters such as Jimmy Smith and Joey DeFrancesco have taught and supported Monaco and the latter even wrote a statement for the new CD about what an incredible player he is. DeFrancesco also joins in on piano on many of the tracks of the first CD, making for a unique sound not often heard. Guitarist Paul Bollenback is no slouch either. And Tony does a few vocals as well. The nine tracks: Blues for T, Backward Shack, Gil Talk, Fungi Mama, Jumpin the Blues, Ashleen, Bluesette, Road Song, So Long for Now. The new CD has as its title a nickname given Tony - a Master Chops knows when to play and when to leave space in the music. His trio is joined here by trombonist Sarah Morrow, saxist Donny McCaslin, and trumpeter Kenny Rampton, his guitarist Derek DiCenzo doubles on steel drums, and Tony doubles on accordion (his original instrument as a child) as well as singing in a Sinatra-like voice on two of the 11 tracks. There are some lavish horn arrangements and overall the CD is quite a bit more sophisticated than the first album, good as that is. Tracks: Acid Wash, White Dude Special, Ya Bay BEE, Tramps Blues, Ode to Brother Jack, So May It Secretly Begin, Luck Be a Lady, Apple Honey, St. Thomas, Me and Mrs. Jones, Pick up the Pieces.
