First university fellow appointed
Charles Link Jr., director of the Human Gene Therapy Research Institute at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, has been appointed Drake's first-ever university fellow by the Drake University Board of Governors.
"Dr. Link's appointment as a university fellow means that we have a nationally prominent scholar as a member of the faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences," said Ron Troyer, dean of the college. "The appointment stems from the connections the faculty in the biology department have fostered with an outstanding member of the community."
Link, who holds an M.D. and B.A. from Stanford University, has held various administrative positions in research laboratories at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Iowa State University. He also has had more than 150 scientific publications and abstracts and given more than 85 invited presentations.
His work has been recognized with nine awards from organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, the U.S. Public Health Service, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Physicians and the U.S. Navy. In addition to his work at the Human Gene Therapy Institute, Link is an adviser to pharmaceutical companies, a reviewer for numerous professional and scientific journals and a member of many hospital and institute committees and boards.

"Live Trane" Box Set
... Index To Previous Coltrane News Articles Juno Lewis Dies . Percussionist/composer Juno Lewis, author of "Kulu Se Mama", one of the more unusual entries in the Coltrane discography, died April 9, 2002, in Inglewood CA. He was 70. A mutual friend introduced Lewis to John Coltrane in the fall of 1965, during Coltrane’s tour of the west coast. During the weeks that the Coltrane group was at the long-since shuttered It Club, Lewis became friends with Coltrane, introduced his mother to him, and shared his music with him. When Coltrane took the band into the Western Recorders studio on October 14, he invited Lewis to join them. Two titles were recorded, the long autobiographical poem "Kulu Se Mama" and Coltrane’s "Selflessness". On the former Lewis sang and played various instruments; on the latter he played additional percussion. Lewis performed one more time with Coltrane, at a concert at Stanford early in 1966. "Kulu Se Mama" was released late that year, as one side of the album

Clark Tracey was born in London, England in 1961. From an early age Clark took to the piano and vibraphones and at the age of 13 he turned to the drums and gigged until the age of 17 when, in 1978, he turned professional by joining his illustrious father Stan Tracey's various groups of that time. In that context he has toured and recorded extensively to the present day. In 1981 he formed the first of his own various groups which featured Django Bates and Iain Ballamy. Later groups have included Guy Barker, Jamie Talbot, Nigel Hitchcock, Dave O'Higgins, Mark Nightingale, Mornington Lockett, Julian Arguelles, Gerard Presencer, Alec Dankworth, Arnie Somogyi and Steve Melling. Clark also composes and arranges and has received commissions for his own quintet, an octet shared with pianist Dave Newton, 'Continental Drift' - an 11 piece band co-composed with Stan Tracey commissioned by The Arts Council, and big band arrangements for the Berkshire Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Appleby Festival big band. In addition he has written string arrangements for Claire Martin and Tina May. As a freelance drummer he has performed at one time or another with virtually every important jazz artist in the UK and an ever expanding list of American and European visitors (see list below).

Darrell Grant, jazz pianist now based in Portland, Ore love his solos on the FenderRhodes piano; he On his list of thanks • julian Bream's Classical Guitar
http://www.kitbraz.com/gen/rev/2000WCWstaudterThank.html
by Thomas Staudter
Another year has passed during which I've interviewed dozens of musical artists, mostly from the jazz world, and, as always, from these conversations, I've learned a great deal about how artists create their work and manage to survive, even flourish in the music industry. My last question during these interviews is usually this: What particular albums or CDs, or even just artists themselves, are you especially thankful for? I emphasized that this wasn't a question about "desert island" favorites or even necessarily an artist's best work, What I hoped to elicit were more thoughtful answers about what mattered most to these artists, what struck them, what, perhaps, they even felt was a gift from the cosmos. So, here for the third consecutive year in the Weekly (the length, so far, of my tenure at this esteemed journal) is a list of thanks from a wide range of musicians. Particular songs are noted in quotation while albums are in italics. And I've also included some of the more interesting comments about why these musicians picked the musicians they did. Jane Siberry , singer-songwriter and earth angel from Ontario, Canada, whose latest CD is Hush
