John L. Grant said: This recording changed my conception of what is possible on the piano with Bach, and changed my view of Bach. Although the recording is not well engineered, the playing is breathtaking, astonishing, incomparable. Richter's interpretation of the Well-Tempered is equalled, here and there in small degrees by other pianists, but as a whole, no other recorded interepretation comes even close to Richter's mastery of the instrument and the music. Take the races: horse No. 1 beats horse No. 2 by a quarter of a head. This is an actual happening and can be measured (although I could never understand why this "quarter of a head" should rouse the spectators to such a pitch of excitement). But how can we measure accurately the qualitative differences of phenomena in the spiritual world, how can we determine their "height" as we determine the height of Elbrus or Gauri Sankar? For art is perceived not only intellectually ("measurably") but also emotionally, or in other words "non-rationally". The emotional approach to art is not a debatable subject because of the famous maxim that "tastes differ". (Personally, I think it's most debatable since tastes can be good or bad.)

GREAT ARTISTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY SVIATOSLAV RICHTER Biography Sviatoslav Richter was born in Zhitomir in the Ukraine on 20 March, 1915. His father was of German origin, and was a respected pianist and piano teacher. His Russian mother was an amateur musician who was one of the early admirers of Debussy and Scriabin. He had his first music lessons with his father, becoming a master of the keyboard at the age of 8. The family later moved to Odessa where the young Sviatoslav enrolled at the Odessa Conservatory. As a teenager, he was attracted to a career in conducting. At 15 he became a repetiteur for the Odessa Opera and the Ballet Theater, and at 18, chief assistant conductor. He gave his first piano recital at the age of 19, also in Odessa. At the age of 22 he went to study in Moscow with one of Russia's most foremost piano teachers, Heinrich Neuhaus. He was Neuhaus' star student, who later wrote of him: "I must say in all honesty that there was nothing more I could teach Richter" . Despite that he was expelled three times from the conservatory for refusing to study all the compulsory subjects including "political education". However, each time he was reinstated.

But there were always inner constraints or health reasons, and ultimately it has not harmed his reputation as one of the world's finest pianists. He was 82. Renowned for improvisatory genius, Richter could sell out any concert hall in the world, even at age 80. Although the music world had many pianists who were technically brilliant, Richter was one of the few who excelled both technically and artistically. His was a wide repertoire that included practically all styles, from Bach to Debussy, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. When Richter played a series of concerts at the Los Angeles County Music Center and the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in 1965, Times music editor Albert Goldberg said audiences were treated to "true Richter magic." "Pianistically the quality was unvarying," the critic wrote. "He is one of the masters of the instrument."

In 1960 he made the first of many international concert tours. Richter is known as a perfectionist who plays in a warm, romantic style.
