SVIATOSLAV RICHTER SERIES Olympia's Richter series has been extremely well received across the world and is our overall best-selling series of discs. Review extracts: "Remarkably well recorded... one performance after another is so memorable as to rank among the best versions around of the piece in question. His Schumann... has always been dazzling, because he has a temperament that convincingly responds to the extreme swings in mood. The reading of the Etudes Symphoniques was for me an overwhelming experience. There is such richness too in the Beethoven variations that it seems pointless and unfair to highlight any one in particular. Well chosen and excellent in sound, these performances should not be missed by those attracted to this repertoire." DOREMI
Legendary Treasures DHR-7724
[78'52"] full-price by Evan Stephens Not many people know that Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter (1915 - 1997), besides being one of this century's greatest pianists, was also an amateur artist, painting watercolors and drawing charcoal sketches of locations he had visited on tour. Not many people know, also, that he was originally slated to become a conductor, but found the piano more suited to his tastes instead. These two factors come very much into play when analyzing any of his playing, and this new release by Doremi is no exception. Being a painter, Richter surely knew what the purest intentions of making art were, and this is clearly evident in this CD. His unique artistic vision (he was often deemed, like Chopin was before him, the "poet of the piano") provided him with a distinct idea of the music he played. No two Richter interpretations are ever the same, much like no two paintings of the same subject by an artist are exactly the same. And being trained as a conductor, Richter knew the driving force behind the music he played, something that became his trademark. Indeed, after hearing him in 1958 Van Cliburn remarked that "this is the most powerful piano-playing I have ever heard"! His driving rhythm, clear idea of the forces at play, and unique concept of the music and how it should be interpreted by his deft, swift fingers gave Richter a status that is legendary today.

Maestro Richter on Live Classics
Our first professional contact with Sviatoslav Richter occurred as the result of the discovery of some tapes with Mozart Violin Sonatas which we were able to acquire from the Moscow archives of Kondrashin. After careful listening Richter spontaneously gave his consent for their production ( LCL 123 ). Over the years his selfless and total support of the legacy of Oleg Kagan on Live Classics was one of our most valuable assets. And we understood very well that this involvement on his part was on behalf of Oleg whom he held dear as a human being no less than a musician. In talking to Richter some time after the release of these CDs and two others featuring Elisso Wirssaladze ( ). He generally did not oppose recordings being made during concerts, but he made no concessions such as extra studio sessions, rehearsals for the set-up of microphones or additional recording sessions after a concert for corrections. All this may have contributed to the rumour that he sometimes took a critical position in regard to major labels. We personally believe that quite a few labels succeeded with great effect in their endeavour to present the art of Sviatoslav Richter. Richter definitely liked his recordings to be released as long as he was confident about their musical quality. With respect to the choice of music, several times he explicitly expressed his wish that the recording of a certain piece should be released even though there existed another recording of the same composition in his performance, ‘simply because it would be different and therefore interesting.’

I've enjoyed this book enormously and don't mind that, as Monsaingeon tells us in the introduction, this is not exactly a biography- the title of the book also makes that clear. The style and tone of the book are wonderfully simple and direct, and many passages are very humourous. I especially liked Richter's description of Maria Yudina and the accompanying photo's (in the second photo she looks like a tramp in sporting shoes). It tells also of the eccentricity and powerful personalities (especially Yudina) that today would, I'm afraid, be ridiculed. The whole atmosphere of Russia, despite it's enormous injustice, seems ages ago from today's streamlined concerts, planned a year or more in advance, where pianists receive enormous salaries.

BBC LEGENDS BBCL 4031 (F) (ADD) TT: 69:04 These Richter performances from Proms Concerts in July 1961 have been circulated in pirate copies for years doubtless emanating from the LP transcriptions distributed by the BBC to public radio stations in the early sixties. Now from the best possible source the BBC master tapes we have these digitally remastered in superb sound. Interpretations of the two concertos are legendary, familiar to collectors from the Mercury studio recordings made for Philips shortly after these concert performances (Philips 446 200). The live performances have perhaps a touch more intensity, with Kondrashin's accompaniment always pushing forward, showcasing Richter's perfection. The concerts were in Royal Albert Hall July 16, 1961 (Chopin) and July 18, 1961 (Liszt), a site conducive to fine reproduction. Balances are natural, piano tone perhaps a touch lacking in brilliance; however, the overall effect for these magisterial performances is just fine. The CD catalog lists Richter live performances of the Liszt works from the mid-fifties; surely the new BBC versions are the ones to have. This release represents the BBC Legends series at its finest; let us hope treasures like this continue from these fantastic archives.

Writer Jack Kerouac describing Burroughs Not originally considered one of the Beat writers, William Burroughs is now a favorite in that genre to some and hated by many others. Born to an upper-class Midwestern family, Burroughs' parents early on seemed to accept their son with his strong homoerotic tastes and fascination for guns and crime, even supporting him financially after he graduated from Harvard University as he experimented with various lifestyles. At first indifferent to serious literary pursuits, Burroughs wrote "Junky," an autobiography of his heroin addiction. He followed that up with a similar study of his homosexuality in a book titled "Queer." But it was the psychedelic "Naked Lunch" that made Burroughs an underworld celebrity.

visitors since October, 16th, 2000 At the end of 1992, immediately after New Year's Day, Sviatoslav Richter was in Rome, coming from Moscow, just after the end of the festival "the evenings of December", founded in 1981 by him and by the manager of the prestigious Puskin Museum, Mrs. Irina Antonova. The festival concerts took place in the Museum rooms, between a selection of paintings and drawings chosen according to a musical and pictorial "theme" . The happy Muscovite audience could in this way appreciate Richter in various ways: as soloist, with chamber groups, as singers accompanist, and even as director. A t 4:30 PM Sviatoslav Richter (above with Valerij Voskobojnikov in Siena, 1992) went to the theater. The audience, composed by many young students, was asked not to bother the performer taking photos during the performance and not to record. At the beginning they were perhaps a little frightened, but soon the audience warmed up becoming enthusiastic with the encore: "Bruyères" by Debussy. The Master confided us that the program had risen in a fairly casual way. But we know him, and we can disagree. The program was a collection of great composers works, too often neglected by the Italian Conservatories, in which he chose in a near to automatic way for an audience of young students. At the end of the concert the Master in his dressing room autographed many of the programs for the young audience. Happy, incredulous expressions, for the unforgettable opportunity in the small southern city. After the concert Paolo Ciardi and I were entertained by the Master, who was with his agent Mrs. Milena Borromeo, at his hotel room.

In the slow movement your teacher conjures up a Classical opera aria as an illustrative example, complete with specific characters, and even ventures to invent an imaginary reconstruction of the opening: "Dio, che guar - da [rest] tut - ti gli~a - man - ti [rest] ..." Chances are that you are among the lucky chosen ones in the class of famous Russian-American pianist Boris Berman. Your level of playing (and your budget) do not allow you to study with a professor of international stature at Yale University? There is no need for despair. Professor Berman has crystallized his most nourishing ideas in an astonishingly eloquent and lucid manner. "Notes from the Pianist's Bench" is his highly informative, rational book of advice geared to the undergraduate and graduate piano student. Unlike those dry and overblown piano methods of early German theorists (Deppe, Breithaupt, Tetzel, Martienssen) Berman's prose is striking a perfect balance between the philosophical and the practical, between the erudite and the anecdotal, the comprehensive and the concise, imagination and realism, elementary and advanced; and it can definitely be comprehended by the educated layman, last not least thanks to the many highly appropriate musical examples.

Musical diaries reveal that Richter was not an enigma By James Roos, Published Sunday, June 24, 2001 in the Miami Herald During the Cold War's uneasy American-Soviet cultural exchanges, there was always the possibility that a Russian pianist rather puzzlingly withheld from export, and known only by a few recordings could turn out to be another big one on the never crowded horizon of major virtuosos. So music buffs were intensely curious about Sviatoslav Richter, when Emil Gilels, a great Russian pianist whose debut in the mid-1950s set off storms of applause, said "Wait until you hear Richter." Richter's American debut took place on Oct. 15, 1960, in Chicago, playing the Brahms B-flat Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, when Erich Leinsdorf jumped in at the last minute to conduct for an ailing Fritz Reiner. As I happened to live there then, I joined the throng at Orchestra Hall, where everyone was on tenterhooks to discover what this artist, whom Time magazine had just touted as the "mystery pianist from the East," was all about. It didn't take long to find out. Richter was instantly and forever a great pianist in the highest tradition, exciting, formidable a spectacular technician, of course but also deeply satisfying; a pianist who constantly took you by surprise, though his refusal to conform was not a matter of caprice, but of a brilliant, probing, intuitive mind. He could do anything he wanted, and he wanted to explore music. It was the greatest joy to hear him year after year in a constantly widening repertory.
