MICHAEL ROLL REVIEWS Neue Philharmonie, Westfalen/Tabakov - 20 December 2000 "The other star of the evening was Michael Roll who has a worldwide reputation as a Beethoven interpreter.... The christalline purity he brought to the slow movement - seldom heard in this way - made for a movingly poetic Largo. Roll (whose facial expressions were clear pointers to the work's sound world and structure) was not afraid to stress a particular musical point in an individual way whether it be in rests, resonances, rapid passage work, arpeggio phrases or pedalling yet always in a logical manner. His Chopin Nocturne encore - dreamily impressionistic - was also a gem." Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung "The British pianist Michael Roll shone in Beethoven's first concerto. He is a formidable virtuoso with a splendid technique, conjouring up some glorious passage - work and tasteful ornamentation... The intensity and solemnity of the slow movement were inspirational.... The audience did not let him go until he had given a Mozart encore. This exceptional performance only served to emphasize his reputation as one of the leading British pianists of today." Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung "One has heard this concerto in so many different performances and believes one really knows it - then along comes a Michael Roll and plays it in such a way that one finds oneself hearing this piece as if for the first time. To begin with the public is taken aback - Roll interprets the music not only with his hands but also every fibre in his body. Every conceivable emotion is expressed in his face from wittiness to defiance, light to shade and the smallest detail is brought to life is a most unsentimental manner. I have seldom heard Beethoven like this and the orchestra appeared electrified by the unique presence of this pianist. Roll's Beethoven playing was absolutely masterful and the calls of bravo were most deserved. If anything he reached even greater heights in his deeply poetic Chopin encore. We really must hear this pianist again."

Michael Roll Pianist Beethoven and Motorbikes Born in England of Viennese parents, Michael Roll began playing the piano at a very early age. He studied with Fanny Waterman from the age of six, made his debut with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at the age of ten, played the Schumann Piano Concerto in the Royal Festival Hall, London, under Sir Malcolm Sargent at twelve, and at seventeen was the outstanding winner of the first Leeds International Piano Competition. Later, he took conducting lessons with Edgar Cosma in Paris. Michael Roll is now widely recognised as one of the finest interpreters of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann. Michael Roll has played all over the world, working with such conductors as Boulez, Giulini, Leinsdorf, Masur, Previn and Sanderling. In 1974 he made a successful American debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Colin Davis, and has since visited the United States and Canada on several occasions. Michael Roll appears regularly with the major orchestras of the United Kingdom both at home and abroad. He first visited Hong Kong with the London Philharmonic, toured Japan with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Holland with the ECO, Germany and Switzerland with the BBC Symphony, Spain with the Royal Philharmonic, and Eastern Europe with the Scottish Chamber, Northern Sinfonia, and The Philharmonia. Festival appearances have included Aldeburgh, Bath, Edinburgh, Granada, Hong Kong, Vienna, and the prestigious Klavier-Festival Ruhr in Germany.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Carrie Kikel Director of Public Relations OR Karen Pederson Public Relations Coordinator BRITISH PIANIST MICHAEL ROLL TO PERFORM BEETHOVEN’S FIRST CONCERTO
Portland, Ore. ... British pianist Michael Roll, widely recognized as one of the finest interpreters of Beethoven, will perform the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major with the Oregon Symphony, March 11-13, at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. Music Director and Conductor James DePreist will conduct. Media support for Classical concerts is provided by The Oregonian.
Roll made his debut with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at the age of 10, and at age 12 he played the Schumann Piano Concerto at the Royal Festival Hall in London. His international career was launched when he won the first prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition. Now recognized as a leading interpreter of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann, Roll will perform Beethoven’s lively First Piano Concerto, which in fact was not the composer’s first. His Concerto No. 2 in B-flat preceded it by a couple of years, but the C Major was published first and hence numbered first. DePreist also will conduct works by the two composers whom many consider to be the greatest masters of the Classical style: Haydn’s poignant Symphony No. 44, “Trauer-Symphonie (Mourning Symphony)” and Mozart’s heartfelt and somber Symphony No. 40, “G minor.”

Kontserdipeegel Visandeid Beethovenist
13. I andis Estonia kontserdisaalis klaveriõhtu austria päritolu Inglismaal tegutsev pianist Michael Roll. Kontserdikavast sai tutvustuseks lugeda, et Rolli peetakse just heaks Mozarti, Beethoveni, Schuberti interpreteerijaks, kelle mõnedki esitused on arvatud samasse klassi Brendeli, Barenboimi, Perahia omadega.
Michael Roll pakkus seekord kolm stiilinäidet Beethoveni sonaatidest : varase perioodi säravalt virtuoosliku C-duur-sonaadi op.

Prof. James Dapogny ... Mike Meddings Laurie Wright was born in Ware, Hertfordshire in 1929. His interest in rhythmic music began at an early age. He opened an electrical and record shop in Walthamstow, East London in 1955, doing his best to promote jazz. Then in 1965, together with Jack Harvey and three other friends, he founded the internationally acclaimed magazine “Storyville.” In 1968, along with John R.T. Davis, he produced the booklet “Morton’s Music” and he began publishing a long series of jazz books, several of which he wrote himself. Major works by Laurie include: “ Mr. Jelly Lord ,” “King Oliver,” “Fats In Fact,” and the “Jug Bands of Louisville.” By June 1995 the “Storyville” magazine had reached 162 issues, all published on time - a notable achievement. Since “retiring” in 1995, Laurie has produced three follow-up volumes of the magazine and he now continues his researches in a more leisurely way. Prof. Lawrence Gushee The University of California Press , the book reasserts the importance of this work of African American biography to the study of jazz and American culture.
