Over the past 20 years Pianist/Composer Michael Jefry Stevens In the last several years Mr. Stevens began several new projects including the Conference Call Quartet featuring his partner of many years bassist Joe Fonda in collaboration with German saxophonist Gebhard Ullmann and originally Matt Wilson on drums (Han Bennink and George Schuller have also performed with the group). This quartet released their debut CD in 2002 on Soul Note Records and have already toured the USA and Europe several times. Additionally, Michael Jefry Stevens performed his first solo piano European tour in March 2001 to celebrate his 50th birthday. A live CD from this tour is released on Jazz Halo Records in Belgium. Michael Jefry Stevens continues to explore new musical avenues and associations. During a recent European tour in France Mr. Stevens recorded a series of free improvisations with French Saxophonist Duanik Lazro in collaboration with the Fonda/Stevens Group. He is also scheduled to record with several prominent Swiss improvisors and will be touring Denmark in the company of some wonderful Danish improvisors. Mr. Stevens is truly a believer in the global music community and a vocal exponent of a truly international improvised music. SOME NOTES ON MICHAEL JEFRY STEVENS/MARK WHITECAGE's CD "SHORT STORIES"

MIDI playing: "The Wall" Originally billed as the Rollin' Stones, the first line-up of this immemorial English 60s group was a nucleus of Mick Jagger (b. Michael Philip Jagger, 26 July 1943, Dartford, Kent, England; vocals), Keith Richard (b. Keith Richards, 18 December 1943, Dartford, Kent, England; guitar), Brian Jones (b. Lewis Brian Hopkin-Jones, 28 February 1942, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, d. 3 July 1969; rhythm guitar) and Ian Stewart (b. 1938, d. 12 December 1985; piano). In their first few months the group met some opposition from jazz and blues aficionados for their alleged lack of musical 'purity' and the line-up remained unsettled for several months. In late 1962 bassist Bill Wyman (b. William Perks, 24 October 1936, Plumstead, London, England) replaced Dick Taylor while drummers came and went including Carlo Little (from Screaming Lord Sutch 's Savages) and Mick Avory (later of the Kinks , who was billed as appearing at their debut gig, but didn't play). It was not until as late as January 1963 that drummer Charlie Watts (b. 2 June 1941, London, England) reluctantly surrendered his day job and committed himself to the group. After securing a residency at Giorgio Gomelsky 's Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, the Stones' live reputation spread rapidly through London's hip cognoscenti. One evening, the flamboyant Andrew Loog Oldham appeared at the club and was so entranced by the commercial prospects of Jagger's sexuality that he wrested them away from Gomelsky and, backed by the financial and business clout of agent Eric Easton, became their manager. Within weeks, Oldham had produced their first couple of official recordings at IBC Studios.

The Third Hand Morten Gunnar Larsen was a rare plant who grew tall in the Oslo watering holes he wasn't even old enough to be allowed into. Now his Jelly Roll! is one of Broadway's long runners. This is the story of the modest Norwegian who comes on stage eight times a week to show the audience that he only has two hands. He is far from home, a pianist, and he doesn't play Grieg. When Morten Gunnar Larsen (1955) interprets Creole crown jewels and is called the "King of Ragtime", it's about as natural as if a Portuguese fado singer were to become the most prominent Sami joik chanter.
And he only has two hands... As a five-year-old he plays the piano to gaping amazement. At thirteen he can't understand why he wasn't born in New Orleans. He makes his debut at the age of eighteen and in the jazz columns we read: "Morten Gunnar Larsen, a young pianist who has been studying the repertoires of Jelly Roll Morton and Scott Joplin for many years, will be playing real Honky Tonk at Storyville from 5 p.m. today." At the age of twenty he makes his first record

    XTRMNTR
    (Astralwerks)

Primal Scream's new CD, XTRMNTR , is a phantasmagoric feast. It is a turbulent mix of rock and electronica that makes today's hard-edged, genre-crossing bands like Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock seem rather tame.
Primal Scream's frontman, Bobby Gillespie, cites German prog rockers Can, keyboard punkers Suicide, Johnny Lydon's post-Sex Pistols band Public Image Ltd., and Miles Davis as influences. With all these musical risk-takers providing the inspiration, it is no wonder Primal Scream doesn't fit into a nice tidy box.
With its infectious sequencer rhythms, the fast-paced "Swastika Eyes" is the breakout track on XTRMNTR . The song "Accelerator" features a raggedly played guitar set against a relentlessly pounding bass line that moves with the tenacity of a dangerous beast. "Blood Money" uses rock rhythms as a base for abstract horn improvisations with dashes of pleasant electronics and guitar attacks that are very reminiscent of PIL's Keith Levine; the bass brings to mind Levine's bandmate Jah Wobble. "MBV Arkestra" has a funky fusion sound with tribal drumming, ethereal strings of flute notes and a mix of trumpet and guitar synthesizer styled after a mid-'70s Miles Davis. Although Primal Scream has been together for 10 years, with

REPERTOIRE LIST Michael Roll REVIEWS Michael Roll is one of Britain's most distinguished pianists. He was born in England, son of Viennese parents, and he began to play at a very early age, studying with Fanny Waterman, and made his concerto debut with the City of Birmingham Orchestra at the age of ten and his Royal Festival Hall debut at twelve playing the Schumann Concerto with Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting. His success at the first Leeds International Piano Competition in 1963, where he won first prize at the age of 17, led to the start of a career which has taken him all over the world, appearing with such conductors as Barbirolli, Boulez, Giulini, Gergiev, Haitink, Leinsdorf, Masur, Previn, Sanderling and Sawallisch. He has toured in Japan with the BBC Symphony, and in Europe with the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and English Chamber Orchestras. Argentine pianist Ral DiBlasio finds classic dance music inspires creativity
    By RAMIRO BURR
On his latest CD, Gardel-DiBlasio-Tango, he pays homage to Carlos Gardel, still considered tango's greatest artist 67 years after his death. Gardel was born Charles Gardes in 1890 in Toulouse, France. He was raised by a single mother who, feeling morally shunned in France, immigrated to Buenos Aires in 1892. As a child, Gardel learned to play guitar, and by 1910 he was a popular local musician. His recording career, which included stints at RCA Victor, Columbia and Odeon, began in 1917. Performing in France in 1925, he helped spark the tango craze in Europe. DiBlasio listened to 120 Gardel songs over a four-month period before settling on 10 tracks.

His publicity photos claimed he was the 'originator of jazz and stomps', an example of the kind of outrageous and colourful statement frequently associated with this most colourful of jazz characters. Morton was born Ferdinand Joseph Lamothe in New Orleans, and he grew up in that city's creole society. After leaving his hometown in 1907 to become a wandering pianist, he seldom returned there, yet his subsequent music was to include some of the most brilliant examples of what is now known as New Orleans jazz. From 1907-1922 he criss-crossed the United States, drawing in a wide range of musical influence, and becoming fully aware of the emergence of jazz. By the end of that period , he was based on the West Coast, where he not only played, but began publishing his compositions. In 1923 he moved to Chicago and soon began a series of outstanding recordings both as a pianist and with various bands.
