Jazz From Lincoln Center Good Old Good Ones Final Draft, September 4, 1998 By Peter Keepnews, 1) Music: Milenburg Joys (Morton) 2) Vox: Michael White (1992 interview, 15:58) The whole idea that early jazz is just the music of a certain period, and that it // no longer has validity in the culture and all, that's a lot of bunk. Bob Wilber (57:54) To me, I listen to the records of these giants they get better all the time. It's like old wine. // It's timeless music, and it's just as up-to-date and // applying to our contemporary living as // when it was made. 3) Bradley: LOUIS ARMSTRONG HAD AN EXPRESSION FOR SONGS THAT STAND THE TEST OF TIME. HE CALLED THEM "THE GOOD OLD GOOD ONES." SOME OF THE MOST DURABLE OF THOSE SONGS WERE FIRST PLAYED IN NEW ORLEANS IN THE EARLY YEARS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. There's not much that sounds like the music of Steven Mackey, and that's saying something. Mackey's past includes freestyle skiing, early music performance, rock bands, and providing a guitar accompaniment for his brothers' LSD trips circa 1969. (Peace, man.) Is it any wonder that, given what went in his brain, what comes out sounds like this? Imagine a Bugs Bunny cartoon jointly scored by Frank Zappa and Charles Ives, and that will give you some idea of Steve Mackey's unusual gifts. Tuck and Roll Lost and Found was heard on a Mackey CD released five years ago (Bridge 9065). The Bridge version was scored for four guitars, classical and electric. This new version is described by the composer as "a snappy five-minute toccata and fanfare for orchestra." Nothing gets in the way of the toccata's kaleidoscopic graceful but perhaps over-eager high spirits; no sooner has a color and a texture been established when Mackey replaces it with something new. The brief fanfare that follows is Rube Goldberg music, perhaps a cousin of Paul Klee's twittering machine. It disappears in the distance, presumably to wreak havoc elsewhere. Eating Greens is an orchestral work in three parts and seven sections. The first part is named for the "domestic themes" of religion (a "(Lethargical) Reformation"), food ("Waffling (sic)"), and art ("Whim and Rigor (Homage to Henri Matisse)"). The middle of these three movements is a phantasmagoric collage of "Here We Come A-Caroling" and party noise-makers, capped by the sound of a phone off its hook and the recorded message, impersonal yet vaguely threatening, of an operator. The second and third parts are named "Loose Ends" (which includes "The Title Is Almost As Long As The Piece Itself," a short but memorably vile inspiration for slack-stringed violin) and "Five Chords." The final movement, named "Drunk Monk," is subtitled "Homage to Thelonius Monk," a jazz pianist Mackey admires for his "quirky, all-thumbs style."

93. Let's Roll - Jeremy Lubbock

http://letsrollmusic.com/pages/contribpages/artistspages/lubbockf/lubbock.html
Jeremy Lubbock Composer/Arranger/Songwriter/Producer When a record becomes a hit, it's usually the songwriters, producers and the performer who garner most of the acclaim, while one of the most important cogs in the hitmaking machinery - the arranger - goes virtually unnoticed. Along with the producer, it's the arranger who helps shape the song in the studio, fleshing out the songwriter's melody, framing the song with the proper instrumentation and creating the proper mood - be it a dance record or a big ballad - eventually turning the song into something that lodges itself in the ears of the record-buying public.
One of the best of these behind-the-scenes maestros is British-born Jeremy Lubbock. A highly respected arranger, producer and songwriter, Lubbock has established himself as a unique and important presence in popular music with his uncanny ability to work in a wide variety of musical styles. A list of his credits not only shows off his incredible versatility, but it also reads like a 'Who's Who' of pop music - Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Sting, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Toni Braxton, Maria Carey, Celine Dion, Elton John, Jewel, P Diddy etc
His arranging work includes the following:
* Several songs for Rod Stewart's new "Standards" album
* One song for Toni Braxton's new album
* "America The Beautiful" for Mary J. Blige and Marc Anthony for Superbowl 2002

He studied in Washington D.C. and at Berklee College of Music in Boston, during which he developed into a determinedly modern-jazz player, and an accomplished composer. Arriving in New York in the early 1980s, he worked with Dizzy Gillespie and John Faddis, but his first major exposure came as a member of Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition from 1985-91. During that time, Osby hooked up with Steve Coleman and members of the M-Base collective, experimenting in creating an angular, abrasive style of jazz that included rap and hip-hop components. He is firmly committed to finding methods of improvisation that are contemporary in context and style. In 1990, he signed with Blue Note, and began making a series of discs that incorporated his edgy, urban style of playing, with titles such as Man Talk For Moderns, Vol X. Osby also worked with some of the most experimental figures in jazz, such as the pianist Andrew Hill (who later played on some of Osby's discs). In the late 1990s , Osby became a central figure in Blue Note's group of young signings, and worked regularly on disc and on tour with pianist Jason Moran and vibes player Stefon Harris. With this coterie of players, Osby worked in a more conventional acoustic jazz environment, and his playing blossomed. Some of his finest, most inspired soloing unites the angular lines and edgy rhythms of his earlier days with the flowing swing of bebop, and his informal 'Banned in New York' disc catches him in top form in a club setting.
