Above all pianists - indeed, above virtually any musician of the last fifty years - Arthur Rubinstein represented in both his life and his music-making a unique joie de vivre . That alone would set him apart in this serious musical age, where there is a high degree of skill but very little charm or poetry. Arthur Rubinstein was able to communicate joy in his playing. He loved the piano, he loved the music he played, and he was always able to charm audiences all over the world with one of the most extraordinary personalities that this century has seen. Of course that charm was buttressed by the mind of a superb musician, and by the fingers of a spectacular technician. Rubinstein coaxed a big, sonorous, golden tone from the instrument, and his fingers were in total command of anything in his repertoire. And that, paradoxically, was true even when he dropped notes or smudged passages here and there. For it was clear that a sloppy episode resulted not from lack of native ability but rather from sheer scorn of pedanticism. He was daring, he took chances, and if a few notes suffered en route that was unimportant. He was a natural, born to play the piano, and when he was on the concert stage one felt as though the piano itself was welded to his body. Musician and instrument were one. innigkeit of others, or the egoism of still others. Rubinstein played every piece in a natural, healthy, extroverted manner, with sweep and a big line, with color and fire. As he played, everything sounded natural and logical.

and the Power of Love
A survey of pianist Arthur Rubinstein's career and a guide to his finest records in the BMG Rubinstein CD Collection - his Chopin early records solos chamber music ... concertos and final recordings Recent scientific studies confirm the poets' claim - love really does make the mind work differently. Legendary pianist Arthur Rubinstein (1887 - 1983) loved life to the fullest. He once described himself as the happiest person he had ever met. His music is a unique reflection of that outlook. Yet, his attitude also raised suspicions of shallowness. We expect great artists to suffer. Yet, as Harold Schonberg noted in The Glorious Ones , Rubinstein was one of the very few musicians who died contented, having lived a fabulous and rewarding life and having achieved all he had wanted professionally. Schonberg muses that Rubinstein's only regrets were the cigars he hadn't yet smoked and the wines he hadn't yet tasted (to which perhaps should be added the women he hadn't yet loved). Rubinstein's teen years raise the question that would haunt his reputation throughout his life - if only he had more discipline and focused more on his art, could he have developed into a deeper interpreter? Seizing upon Rubinstein's life-long devotion to philandering and high living, detractors repeatedly (and perhaps jealously?) faulted him for laziness, technical lapses, narrow repertoire and simplification of difficult musical passages (all of which were true).

"On stage, I will take a chance. There has to be an element of daring in great music-making. These younger ones, they are too cautious. They take the music out of their pockets instead of their hearts." B Joachim, who remained the young Rubinstein’s close advisor, introduced him to Heinrich Barth. It was under Barth’s tutelage that Rubinstein made his first steps toward serious performance. After only three years of study in Germany, Rubinstein made his debut at the Beethoven Saal with the Berlin Philharmonic. He played works by Mozart, Chopin, and Schumann, as well as Camille Saint-Saens’s Concerto no. 2 in G, which he would continue to play throughout his career. Amazed by Rubinstein’s performance, one critic wrote "He played everything, not as a child prodigy, but as a mature, adult musician."

He was mainly known for his interpretations of Chopin and Beethoven and the 19th Century 'Great German Composers'. One of the surprising aspects of Rubinstein's life and career was his love of Spain and for Spanish Music. This Polish pianist who trained in Berlin first visited Spain in 1915 and thereafter he was a constant visitor and bought a house in Marbella. He became friends with Manuel de Falla and with the composer's blessing made a keyboard transcription of the "Ritual Fire Dance" from the ballet "El Amor Brujo". This is included on the disc. He took great pleasure in being told that he played "like a born Spaniard". All the recordings are in mono and some taken from 78s but RCA is to be congratulated on the quality of digital re-mastering. In no case does the recording of the piano distract from the music, in fact most sound as if they were made yesterday. The sound of the orchestra in "Nights in the Gardens of Spain" is good for its age.

He was fascinating to watch usually sitting further away from the piano than many pianists and lifting his hands with a floppy wrist movement that was typical of his showmanship. He was a born recitalist, an excellent chamber musician and quite splendid in many concertos. He was a delight to conductors and audiences alike. His work with Leinsdorf, as the two examples on this disc prove, was a marvellous partnership of understanding as it was with the great Fritz Reiner with Rachmaninoff's Second and the Paganini Rhapsody.
