Portrait of the artistist: One of paintings of Arthur Rubinstein that went up for auction These are not the only mementos of the artist, numerous others can be found at the Poznañski Palace in £ód¼ which houses the Rubinstein Museum. The pianist was born in £ód¼, and began his music career by taking piano lessons there at the age of three. The objects put up for auction, including music scores, pictures, furniture and trinkets, were bought by Rubinstein and his wife Nela or were presented to them by prominent politicians and artists over a period of 50 years. Rubinstein was acclaimed as the best performer of Chopin's compositions. A citizen of the world, Rubinstein spent his long and interesting life in Poland, New York City, the Spanish Marbella and Paris. The objects sold at the Parisian auction come from a Parisian house which Rubinstein bought in 1938. The house was in the vicinity of Claude Debussy's residence. In the 1960s, Rubinstein's neighbors were Prince Rainier of Monaco and Princess Grace, whose portrait hung in Rubinstein's living room. The room also had a chandelier hand-picked by the princess, which unfortunately was not auctioned. Rubinstein's life became a legend while he was still in his youth. Twenty years after his death, a large crowd of collectors were attracted to the auction house in the Palais des Congrøs in Paris. Unlike Rubinstein, not everyone has had the opportunity to talk to and to have a keepsake photograph taken with Albert Einstein-the unique picture, valued at 200 euro, was sold for 1,800 euro. Original scores by Beethoven and Brahms were the collection's highlight.

Friedheim's youth was spent in the Russian Empire's glittering capital, St. Petersburg: as he wrote in his fascinating volume Life and Liszt After studying with Anton Rubinstein's pupil Carl Siecke, Friedheim became Rubinstein's piano pupil when he was fourteen years old. They were fruitful studies; Friedheim deeply admired Rubinstein and was awed by his piano playing when the master was in form. However, by the age of sixteen, Rubinstein's wayward temperament had become confusing to Friedheim. "His advice and criticism had begun to vary from day to day. He would say that I was going to be a successful pianist, then he could advise me to give all my time to composition. I decided to take all the advice he offered, and more, to become pianist, composer and conductor as well." Friedheim decided to continue his education in The Faculty of Philosophy at St. Petersburg University. "Here I was in my element. I liked philosophy. Intense application was easy for me; yet I was gregarious and articulate and, because I was a good athlete, as well as a pupil of Rubinstein, and a pianist in my own right, I was popular." He told the conservative Rubinstein that he wanted to go to Weimar to work with Liszt. In those years, Liszt's radical music left Rubinstein cold and angry. When someone asked Rubinstein where Friedheim had gone, he growled, "He went to Weimar - and to the devil." Friedheim hardly felt so. "I learned much from Rubinstein during the four years I was his pupil, but I was to learn far more from Franz Liszt, whose daring virtuosity had sounded the depths of music, both past and present, and who was now reaching out into the unknown... When I stood with exalted spirits in the presence of that august and legendary figure, Franz Liszt, my greatest hour had struck."

Ward Davenny, pianist and Yale Professor, succumbed to heart failure December 10 Ward Davenny, Professor Emeritus of Music at Yale University and concert pianist, died on December 10, 2002 of heart failure. A resident of 200 Leeder Hill Road, New Haven, he concertized, taught, and organized concerts until the day of his death. Mr. Davenny had a distinguished and versatile career as piano soloist, concerto performer, chamber music player, teacher, lecturer, and administrator. From 1939 to 1943 Mr. Davenny was a member of the Yale Music Faculty. After three years in the army, he became Director of the Hartford School of Music (1946-1954). In 1954, he was appointed Director of the Cleveland Institute of Music, succeeding Beryl Rubinstein. Serving in that post until 1960, he performed extensively as soloist and as a member of a duo piano team with Arthur Loesser that performed several times with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. He was a member of the Yale Summer School of Music and Art in Norfolk, Connecticut in its first two years (1941 and 1942), then resident pianist for many years. He was pianist of the world-renowned Albeneri Trio (1956-1960). Ward Davenny was predeceased by his wife, the former Ena Grace Nelson, who died in 1998. He is survived by three children, Susan Davenny Wyner, formerly a singer and now a conductor , of Medford, Mass.; Katherine Davenny, an epidemiologist, of Cedar Grove, Maryland; and Ward L. Davenny, an artist and professor of art, of Carlisle, Penna. He is also survived by four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. A musical memorial tribute to Ward Davenny will take place in New Haven some time in 2003.

In 1982 at the age of 12, Sgouros made his Carnegie Hall debut with the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington D.C., under the direction of Mstislav Rostropovich, performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. He has recorded 10 albums which are sold in many countries, with compositions for solo piano by Schumann, Brahms, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Mozart and also Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Fantasia with the London Philharmonic, and Liszt’s Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Slovenia, to name a few as well as the 1st and 2nd Piano Concertos by J. Brahms with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra.
