Ozawa Season Finale Features Pianist Tomsic by Barbara Sealock As Seiji Ozawa's final official season with the BSO wound down last spring, Symphony Hall programming accelerated into high gear with featured performances of the Beethoven Piano Concerto #4 by the Slovenian pianist, Dubravka Tomsic. The concerto, which Tomsic played with customary sensitivity, poignancy, tenderness, thunder and marvelous color, was a dazzling event. And, in her company, the orchestra produced exceptional finesse and opulent sound. A master of the instrument-of whom it has been said, "she has total command of the piano," Tomsic has been a favorite on the American concert stage since her 1989 U.S. debut at the Newport Music Festival with a performance critics dubbed "Nirvana in Newport." Protege of Arthur Rubinstein, Tomsic is an internationally acclaimed virtuoso whose whole-souled artistry captivates listeners. The shimmering phrasing and seamless beauty of her performances are Tomsic trademarks, and the Boston audience lept to its feet with standing ovations. Seiji Ozawa's finale performances for the BSO 2002 winter season preceding the beginning of his contract with the Vienna State Opera in September were eclectic and fittingly comprised of works by Beethoven and Bartok. He took the BSO to New York for repeat performances at Carnegie Hall with Tomsic and the Beethoven Piano Concerto #4. Until Ozawa's return appearance last April, the BSO hosted a series of guest conductors. Ozawa's contributions to the BSO over the past three decades have been enormous.

Arthur Rubinstein
(pianist; born January 28, 1887 Lodz, Poland; died December 20, 1982) Arthur Rubinstein made his first United States tour in 1906 when he was only 19 years old. He became one of the world's foremost concert artists. Rubinstein was born in an Lodz, Poland, on January 28, 1887. He made his first public performance at the age of seven. Four years later, the child prodigy was sent to Berlin to be presented to the great violinist, Joseph Joachim. Impressed with the boy's amazing talent, Joachim offered to assume responsibility for Rubinstein's cultural and musical education. At the age of thirteen, Rubinstein debuted formally in Berlin with the Berlin Philharmonic at a concert featuring the Mozart A major and Saint-Saens G minor concertos. In 1906, he made his American debut, performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. His success here initiated a tour of the United States that included over 40 concerts. Upon leaving America, Rubinstein limited the number of concerts he played. He decided to devote himself to study, travel, and, in his words, "hurdling the greatest obstacle in the path of a prodigy, that of shedding my immaturity."

BOOKWAVES (Words on Books) for KZYX by Tony Miksak Today I want to talk about the pleasures of used books, old books, books out of print, books that were NOT published today and returned to the publisher tomorrow. In a way these are hidden books because up to now they've been difficult to find. Most people when they think of books think of best seller lists, and bookstores full of new books with mint covers. Ask yourself what books you really treasure. Usually those are books that have been around awhile. Books you've held in your hand and dropped baking power into. Books you read ten years ago and unpacked today from a forgotten cardboard box in the barn. Books you remember. Books you picked up at a garage sale and finally got around to reading. Books your mother read to you. Books you read to a child. Books you read when you were eight years old. Books you scribbled in. Books you remember. Books you've forgotten. Old books, books with character. Torn covers, foxed pages, someone else's inscription to someone you don't know scratched in blue ink on the first free end paper. Books that smell musty, or have perfume on them. Books with bent spines, with underlining or marginal notes. Library books borrowed by a dozen people before you. Books someone gave you. Books you borrowed and never returned. Not long ago In the charming town of Pt. Reyes Station I had the time to nose around Jill Westley's Brown Study Bookshop, a wonderful used book store that has been in Pt. Reyes for many years. In the music section I found a slightly battered copy of

Both of these issues are important. In the Hall of Fame of recordings of Verdi's Requiem (the last Schwann/Opus Now, courtesy of LIVR ( Locked in the Vault Reissues ) we have a performance recorded in the early '50's issued about that time in the U.S. on poor-sounding Parliament LPs. Producers of this CD reissue have been able to find a mint copy of a French Philips LP issue the liner notes for which indicate that this was a landmark recording in Russia as it was a "religious" work. Of great interest is soprano Galina Vishnevskaya heard very early in her career (she first began to sing at the Bolshoi Opera in 1953), and Ivan Petrov's bass is equally commendable. The Russian Chorus is strong in male voices and, predictably, Markevitch's interpretation is dynamic to the extreme. Sound quality is surprisingly good although don't expect the smashing

  • So a composite video such as this one is for me a veritable treasure trove, a true legacy of a large proportion of the great piano playing of the 20 th th . The video available for purchase is narrated by John Tusa, but the same program as seen on PBS several months ago was narrated by John Rubinstein, son of Arthur. I was told by the producers that since the film involved many studios from many countries, the video exists with various narrations in different languages. The small booklet enclosed with the video has a text that follows to a large extent the line of the film; it has been translated into English from an article in French.
There are also commentaries by a number of pianists, conductors and managers, including Piotr Anderszewski, Daniel Barenboim, and Colin Davis. Some of these are enormously sympathetic, such as Anderszewski, or very insightful, such as Daniel Barenboim, who describes each artist in a particularly characteristic way. Cortot, for example, he describes as follows: "I think Cortot looked for the opium in music. He looked for anything that was extraordinary; he always looked for something, not sickly, but something abnormal, totally removed from reality, and far from anything that could be construed as smelling of normality."

Still is his teens, Nelson Freire was awarded First Prize at the Vianna da Motta International Competition, and in London he was awarded the Dinu Lipatti medal presented by Harriet Cohen. His international career began with a series of recitals and concerts in the four continents where he established his reputation as one of the foremost pianists of his time.
On disc, Nelson Freire has made astonishingly few recordings. His first recording released in 1968 stunned the American critics and since then, each rare recording he made has been snapped up and treasured by the piano cognoscenti. In October 2001, Mr Freire signed an exclusive contract with Decca and has just recorded a programme of solo Chopin works which will be released in Spring 2002.
Nelson Freire spends his time between Rio and Paris.

    The Chopin Sound.
November 16, 1999. "Hats off, gentlemen, a genius!" was the tribute to the pianist Frederic Chopin by the composer Robert Schumann, no slouch at the piano himself. "Guns smothered in flowers" was Schumann's description of Chopin's sound, which seized Paris' attention in the 1830's and changed piano music forever as Schubert's songs changed singing. The Chopin sound made the piano as big as an orchestra, even in miniature pieces: it was melodic and lyrical, the sound of a man who'd been trained by singers. It was passionate and poetic, the very definition of Romanticism; it had Polish folk music and nationalism inside its mazurkas and polonnaises; yet it stands on its own, as one soulful virtuoso's approach to pure beauty. What kind of beauty is the question that piano performers still wrestle with: on the 150th anniversary of Chopin's death, the pianist Russell Sherman argues it wasn't the stuff of candy-box covers. The Chopin sound - in the second hour of the Connection.

Total Playing Time [73:57] When I was young my father took me to hear a concert by the great pianist Arthur Rubinstein. I consider it a magical omen that this concert by Rubinstein was the very first piano recital I ever attended. We sat right up in the front row so we wouldn't miss anything. On this special evening I was given the blue print for what a real piano recital was all about and I am forever grateful.
The second half of Rubinstein's program was, of course, all Chopin. He played it with nobility, poetry, finesseóa gorgeous soundóI was enraptured. Any pianist who plays Chopin in the second half of the twentieth century must acknowledge the debt owed to Rubinstein. Harold C. Schonberg in his book The Great Pianists called him "the greatest living Chopinist."
