"Theremin" At the beginning of the past century, a new musical instrument was invented which astonished everyone who heard it. The instrument, which looked like a box with two protruding antennas, was named "theremin" in honor of its inventor, the Russian physicist Leon Theremin. The sound produced by the theremin was described as "beautiful enough to die for" and called to mind the mournful singing of lost souls. The theremin was the first electronic musical instrument, and it still remains the most unique instrument in this genre. A weak electrical field surrounds the antennas so that whoever stretches a hand into this field immediately produces musical tones which become shriller or deeper, louder or softer, as the distance varies between the musician's hand and the metal. For the gala concert celebrating the 500th anniversary of Halle-Wittenberg University, Leipzig-based composer and pianist Steffen Schleiermacher composed a piece of music for large orchestra and theremin. The orchestra of the opera house will be conducted by Roger Epple, who will collaborate with soloist Rolf Sudman to give this unusual composition its world premiere.

John Cage - Complete piano music vol.

Contrary Motion One+One (1st version) Mad Rush One+One (2nd version) Two Pages MDG 613 1027-2 Order it at Amazon.com:
The early, radical pieces by Philip Glass always tend to divide the public into two camps on their (quite rare) performances: some listen as if spellbound and open themselves up to the hypnotic, trance-like effect of the music, while others are bored and annoyed by the endless, inane repetitions. In contrast to his later great compositions for music theater, which usually come across as quite pleasing and varied, these early pieces by Glass seem quite archaic in their uniform coloration and monotony. They show us minimalism, so to speak, in statu nascendi Together with LaMonte Young, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley, Philip Glass belongs to the co-founders of minimal music. The additive procedure in Two Pages can be followed as if in a teaching manual. The title refers to the fact that the score consists of two pages. Each measure is supposed to be repeated twenty times. The principle of Contrary Motion is basically the same, but here a mirror part (a sort of elemental counterpoint?) and a pedal part constantly shifting between two bourdon tones are added. Since the individual phrases continue to increase in length, the alternation between these two bass tones becomes slower and slower over the course of the piece, so much so that it produces a slow-motion effect. For their part, the two upper voices always continue unwaveringly in the same tempo.

Days of the Italian Film in Romania
by Mihaela Miron nine o'clock Bucharest - Starting today, Studio Cinema hosts the "Days of the Italian Film." It includes 7 films "comprising the entire spectrum of current Italian film," as Italian film critic Piero Spila said. These films, belonging to well known directors or young film makers capture, in Piero Spila's opinion, two dimensions of Italian cinematography. The first dimension is political engagement and confronting reality and the second dimensions is seen in its "comedy vein." In European cinema the Italians are the only ones that have stepped in front because for the past 10 years, 3 Italian film were awarded an Oscar for best foreign film according to Piero Spilo. The films chosen for this 2nd edition of "Days of Italian Film" won several international awards and are gathered under a common subject: the South of Italy. "The South remains a warm and beautiful place, with generous people, which is similar to Romania, where the corruption can still be fought as in 'Portaborse,' where the Mafia is mocked like in 'Tano da Morire,' where one can still die for justice like in 'Giudice Ragazzino' and where dreams and hopes can finally appear like in 'Pane e Tulipani," said Veronica Lazar, actress and president of Itaro Arte. Tonight's film, starting 20:30, is Silvio Soldini's comedy "Pane e Tulipani" ("Bread and Tulips"), a film awarded 9 David and Donatello Prizes in 1999. The other films which will run at Studio Cinema until November 2, every night starting at 20:15 are: "Porta Aperte" ("Opened Doors") by Gianni Amelio, "Il Portaborse" ("The Errand Boy") by Daniele Luchetti, "Sangue Vivo" ("Living Blood") by Edoardo Winspeare, "La Balia" ("The Nanny") by Marco Bellocchio, "Tano da Morire" (To Die for Tano") by Roberta Torre and "Il Giudice Ragazzino" ("Law of Courage - The Junior Magistrate") by Alessandro de Robilant.

Considered "first-class", "poised" and "sumptuous and eloquent" by the Boston Globe, pianist Sarah Bob
Well-known as a champion of twentieth-century music, Institute director Stephen Drury 's repertoire extends from Bach, Schubert, and Liszt to the complete piano sonatas of Charles Ives and music by John Cage, Elliott Carter, Frederic Rzewski, John Zorn, Morton Feldman, Gyorgy Ligeti, and Luciano Berio. He has performed throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia, taking the sound of dissonance into remote corners of Pakistan, Greenland and Montana. He was a prize-winner in the Carnegie Hall/Rockefeller Foundation Competitions in American Music, and the United States Information Agency selected him twice for its Artistic Ambassador program. Recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Meet the Composer, Drury has commissioned new works from John Zorn, John Cage, Terry Riley, Lee Hyla and Chinary Ung. Stephen Drury teaches at the New England Conservatory of Music. He has recorded for Mode, Tzadig, Avant, New Albion, Catalyst, MusicMasters and Neuma.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer described Paul Elwood , composer, five string banjo player, and percussionist as “a composer-performer with the imagination of a child and the self-assurance of a virtuoso.” His music, heralded for it’s colorful use of sound and “fascinating effects,” has been performed at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music; June In Buffalo, a festival for emerging composers; the North American New Music Festival; the Eastman School of Music; and at the American Academy in Rome, where Elwood was the Southern Regional Visiting Composer last fall. Ensembles that have given voice to his music include the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Tambuco (the Mexican Percussion Quartet, Mexico City), the Scottish Chamber Orchestra String Quartet, the Dehler String Quartet (Weimar, Germany), Trio Phoenix (Montreal, Quebec), and the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.

This, the 5th issue in the famous edition of John Cage Steffen Schleiermacher , deals with Cage Schleiermacher Schleiermacher , but Josef Christof makes a good job out of it. The compositions herein may be separately grouped into two sections, spaced apart by a very long intermittence of more than four decades. A Book of Music was achieved in 1944. Three Dances and Experiences I were finished in 1945. Not until 1989 do we see the emergence of Two , which is one of the many possible compositions in the grouping Music for, which he started in 1984, and of which we see many recordings these days, on, for example, OgreOgress productions and Mode Before Cage began working with A Book of Music he had refrained from composing music that had to be performed by anyone else than himself, since he was disappointed at the interpreting skills of the musicians among his contemporaries. He constrained himself to writing pieces that could be performed by himself at the piano or conducting a percussion ensemble. This was partly also due to his good reputation with choreographers and dance companies, which were in need of such compositions.
