"The power, finesse and emotional fervor of the Orion String Quartet transfigured the new and the old alike into something majestic." ( Dallas Morning News ) Hailed for its technical mastery, richness of tone and exquisite artistry, the Orion String Quartet is one of the most admired chamber music ensembles on the scene, and gave an exceptional UMS performance with the Guarneri String Quartet three years ago. For this performance, the ensemble is joined by American pianist Peter Serkin, one of the most thoughtful, passionate and uncompromising musicians performing today. Serkin made his UMS debut in 1963 at the age of 16, and his rich musical heritage - his father, the pianist Rudolf Serkin, appeared under UMS auspices 18 times between 1939 and 1980 - has influenced his keen interest in many musical styles, prompting New York Magazine to enthuse, "He is one of the supreme musicians of our time."

The opposite cases are so rare, in which I think Rudolf Serkin perhaps succeeded most. Furthermore, he is one of the most outstanding example of a professional musical family in 20th century. Rudolf Serkin was born in Eger(Bohemia? Austria?) on 28th March 1903 in a Jewish Russian family. He was taught music by father(singer) and moved to Vienna at nine, where piano by Richard Robert and composition by Joseph Marx(then George Szell was among his pupil, and the two musician coworked in many recordings later in USA). Rudolf was hailed as a child prodigy as he played Mendelssohn's concerto with Vienna Philharmonic at twelve, but he started regular concert carrier in 1920. It is said that his connection with Busch family was in 1920, also. (I heard this story that) Adolf Busch was seated at a concert by Rudolf. Busch was amazed by Rudolf's gifts and tried to meet him so as to ask his accompaniment, managing to meet Rudolf at train station shortly before Rudolf's leaving because he was disappointed by audiences' response. The two men, met by accident, had played for 32 years. Rudolf gave the Berlin d

Pianist Peter Serkin to Perform at Middlebury College's Center for the Arts
Pianist Peter Serkin will perform in the Concert Hall at the Middlebury College Center for the Arts on Tuesday, October 14 at 7:30 p.m. According to Susan Stockton, the director of the CFA, Mr. Serkin's concert will be one of the highlights of the College's concert series. "Peter is bombarded with requests to perform. He's also very selective about his commitments so we're thrilled that he's coming," said Ms. Stockton.
Peter Serkin combines a long-standing and absorbing interest in contemporary music with a thorough, ongoing exploration of the standard classical repertoire. This unique blend brings a remarkable diversity to Mr. Serkin's programs. On October 14, he will p erform works by Reger, Takemitsu, Lieberson, Knussen and Beethoven.
Since his debut at age 12 at the Marlboro Music Festival, Mr. Serkin has successfully conveyed the essence of four centuries of musical repertoire. His performances with symphony orchestras, recital appearances, chamber music collaborations, and recordings worldwide caused "New York Magazine" to comment, "He is one of the supreme musicians of our time." Mr. Serkin has performed with the world's major symphony orchestras, from those of New York and Los Angeles to the London Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. "Peter Serkin's Saturday afternoon piano recital at the Kennedy Center was one of the great musical events of the season-serious, searching and stimulating, an idiosyncratic mixture of familiar and unfamiliar works played with poetry and authority," said "The Washington Post."
