John S. Gray, Linda Shumas, the ensemble Floating World plus guest performer.
Composer Gray returns to the Music Gallery after a 20-year absence, now with Floating World. Gray’s works from his exile years on the Nova Scotian coast finally surface, two of them premieres. Pianist Shumas will perform Gray’s 1997 Fantasie, Minuet and Trio. A young composer-performer from the National Capital Region will make a surprise appearance at this event.
Words of John S. Gray:
Chronologically, the FANTASIE, MINUET and TRIO overlaps the AUTUMN PRELUDE, and indeed it might be fair to consider the little trio a diversion project from the massive solo piano work. I had no intention to write a work for solo piano until composer and broadcaster David Jaeger made the suggestion in 1995. For better or worse, this piece was from the very outset intended to be performed by a strong virtuoso pianist and to be broadcast over the TWO NEW HOURS radio programme on CBC Radio Two (or CBC Stereo, as it was then, and still sometimes i think of it that way).
But the connection with TWO NEW HOURS, and even a cash stipend for the commission, set up many expectations. This piece was written for the ears of other composers, rather than for the audience. It is by far the most difficult work that I have ever produced, or am likely to. Composer Steve Tittle saw the score of this work in its early stages and predicted that nobody would be able to plat it.

ARTIST of THE DAY. linda shumas is a Canadian composer and pianist. The classicaltrained pianist also draws upon Middle Eastern and other cultural influences.
http://www.geocities.com/lindashumas/bravointerview.html
BRAVO! Interview Linda:
Well it all began at I guess eight years old, I wrote a piece called
"Little Christmas Tree", and this started because of my first piano teacher,
have to credit her for this, even though at the time she instilled fear in me
because she used to have a steel pointer and every time I hit a wrong note,
she hit, you know the hands with the steel pointer. So I thought well if I
created my own music, she can't judge me. Linda:
Well I don't write the piano music because I'm going to be
performing it, and as soon as I write it down I start to see it as notes, and I
like to create the music from sound and emotions. The pieces are like
"structured improvisations" so they always appear the same, but they can have different embellishments, depending on my mood and I've, you know, it prevents boredom as well, for me, and the listener, and I didn't think that notes should be as important as the sound and the emotion coming from them. Linda: I look at the notes as a map, even if I'm playing Beethoven or Bach. I don't feel they wrote out their pieces for competitions or you know

Sunday Dec 16
8PM By Donation
Toronto seminal free improvisor Maury Coles passed away Tuesday Sept 4th after a long bout with cancer. Maury believed strongly in the musician's right to instantly compose. He was a founding member of Toronto's free jazz collective CCMC and acted as mentor to a large number of emerging improvisers. Maury always took it upon himself to create an avenue for improvisation. From creating the improvisor's pool, a weekly event that allowed both young and old, new and experienced to share a stage, to traveling the world to play with the world's greatest players. Maury's memory lives on. A Toronto icon is remembered by his friends and associates, AMTM, Abstract and other special guests. International artists such as Le Quan Ninh and Mike Kury will be performing special commissions written specifically for this occasion. Ron Gaskin
