in 1989. It was late in that year that his wife died from cancer. Another Blue Note session followed in 1990. Since then Andrew has recorded some sideman dates including a session for Reggie Workman that saw him working with former Blue Note labelmate Sam Rivers. 1995 saw the release of a box set of Andrew's Blue Note albums which has hopefully re-vitalised interest in his recordings. Andrews is widely considered as a most important jazz pianist and composer. Contributions, corrections and any suggestions are welcome. DISCOGRAPHY/SESSIONOGRAPHY

24. Classical CDs For December '99
Frederic Chiu Harmonia mundi 907195 The final installment in pianist Chiu's well BFlat Minor; Violin Concerto in E Minor - dan franklin smith, p./Christian
http://www.audaud.com/audaud/DEC99/ClassCDs/clcdsDEC99.html
C LASSICAL CDs for December '99 by John Sunier (unless otherwise bylined) A pair of unique cellists begin our CD survey for the month = Yo-Yo Ma - Solo - Works of Mark O'Connor, Bright Sheng, Alexander Tcherepnin, Zoltan Kodaly, David Wilde - Sony Classical SK 64114: Ma is certainly the versatile, barrier-crossing classical cellist of the 90's. He has performed with world music and American folk music players, had six different artists create films to accompany his performances of the Bach Solo Cello Suites, and now here is another solo cello from him that expands the standard repertory for the instrument. There are many recordings of the Hungarian folk-flavored Kodaly solo Cello Sonata, but none of them contain disc mates as off-the beaten track as on Ma's new album. The Suite by Tcherepnin melds French impressionism with pentatonic scales and other attributes of Chinese music. Ma's overall inspiration for the CD is the balance between roots and wandering, between tradition and innovation. Ancestral spirits are heard in each of the works here, which seem to bridge two different musical worlds. How many top international fashion models do you know that also have a simultaneous career as a top classical cellist? Well, Kotova is one. The Russian beauty, whose mother is a professor at Moscow Conservatory, gave her first public performance at age 6. After study with Khachaturian, she began to create her own compositions, three of which are included in this concert. (Don't expect the Love Theme from Spartacus.) She left Russia at age 18, and presently is concentrating on the stage rather than runway. There's plenty of variety in this program in spite of the heavy Russian slant, and Kotova's cello tone is warm and smooth as butter.

Therapeutic Cloning Petition (May 2002)
The Franklin Society submitted this petition, along with this letter to senators on May 15, 2002. We are no longer taking names for the petition, but you can still call or write your senator and tell him or her to vote against the Brownback-Landrieu bill, S. 1899, which would make therapeutic cloning a crime punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison. Information on how to contact your senator is here . Background information on the issue is here Therapeutic Cloning Should NOT Be Banned We the undersigned recognize that the cloning of cells offers scientists the chance to advance medical research and perhaps one day treat devastating illnesses such as juvenile diabetes, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's by replacing lost or debilitated cells. Congress should not outlaw this research despite recent pressure from various political factions. Nor should Congress impose a moratorium on this research, which would have the effect of halting the advances that are currently being made. We the undersignedmany of us conservatives, some of us scientists, all of us concerned for the futurewant it known that "therapeutic cloning" has supporters from across the political spectrum. To halt this research would be a terrible blow to science and public health.

Relying on conductor David Hamilton for original string arrangements, Michael W. Smith forsakes his overdeveloped skill of lyric-writing to stretch his awareness of classical music. Gone are the snappy choruses, often-confectionary phrases, and all other impediments that obscure what Smitty as an artist. Marching-band drums and measured piano chords announce the start of the meritous opener, "Freedom," inspired by a soldier's ponderous return home. The Irish Film Orchestra , prodded by violin soloist David Davidson , handles an "Offering," a title indicative of Freedom 's purpose as a spiritual catalyst: to fully know refined glory, one must know the King of glory. At a scant 3:18, "The Giving" passes far too quickly; with such a plaintive, lingering composition, other composers would only be starting the onslaught of key changes, crescendos, and cross harmonies. Smith, recalling his identity as entertainer, goes outside his contact boundaries in "Hibernia," a meshwork of Celtic and modern European jigs that comes off too gaudy. Despite the showiness, Freedom does have it highlights. Light and costly, bright and ghastly, the white-and-black keys of Michael W.'s instrument are caressed craftily in "Letter to Sarah." The album's John Williams (famed Star Wars composer) influence is fleshed out on "Freedom Battle"; from the rhythm reversals, to the clusters of opposing themes, this enjoyably imitative piece needs only

Black Dahlia (Blue Note) Listen to " City of Angels" Conceived as something of a "jazz opera," this ambitious large ensemble work by composer, arranger, conductor, and saxophonist Bob Beldon is inspired by the story of the "Black Dahlia," where an aspiring actress named Elizabeth Short whose sensationally publicized murder in 1947 revealed the dark side of the Hollywood dream. Beldon utilizes a 65-piece orchestra along with jazz soloists like trumpeter Tim Hagans and saxophonist Joe Lovano to magnificently capture the imagined film noir-ish aura of late-forties Los Angeles. The music has a cinematic grandeur to it, but the element of jazz is also prominent throughout.

Jazz Pianists
It is observed that the whole history of jazz can be read through the chart of the stylistic development of the pianists. They started it all and other instrumentalists use the techniques which they developed. Even if the pianist is not the star, he is a kind of an aristocrat. He is practically alone and can manage by himself if necessary. Over the years, respect for the role of the jazz pianist has increased. This page will eventually be more descriptive and include many more pianists. I am gradually writing more on people and gathering links. As you can see from the additions below, I've gotten to a lot this week. :) If you would like me to hurry up on one person in particular that you see below, let me know. Tell me who I need to add to this list!!! Send me links, anecdotes, anything you know.. And you can even nominate yourself to be on here. This list is for any jazz pianist. Thanks to all of you who have already submitted information and links!!!
