http://www.inform.umd.edu/cpmag/summer01/portfolio.html
A High-Performance Center Delivers on Cue Upon entering the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at Maryland, it's easy for the visitor to be impressed by the scale of the architectural structure alone. After all, the new center includes six performance venues plus a performing arts library, all within 10 interlocking buildings spread across 17 acres. Dazzling, indeed.
The 1,100-seat Concert Hall is one of several performance spaces wired with fiber-optic audio recording equipment. But just as the quality of an architectural structure is the result of "good bones," spaces that are designed for performance are enhanced by what is not seentechnology that enriches the experience for the student, performer and audience. From the 100-seat laboratory theater to the 1,100-seat Concert Hall, all of the performance spaces are wired to a fiber-optic network that connects them to a recording studio. When the network is fully operational, those who were not in the audience for a particular performance will be able to request a digital recording of it in the performing arts library. Each carrel is equipped with headphones to listen to performances by both visiting artists and students alike. "When you go to many theaters or concert halls, the audience hears a 'whoosh' sound from the HVAC system." says Brian Jose, the center's director of marketing and communications. "Either you get that rush of air or you get silence." Not so at this high-performance center. Gravity-fed air handlers in the ceiling drop hot or cold air, as the ambient temperature requires. The floors are hollow, and a reverse chimney flue sucks the air out silently, explains Jose. "It's imperceptible to the audience."

By HERBERT G. McCANN, Associated Press Writer Roebuck 'Pops' Staples, patriarch of the gospel and rhythm-and-blues group the Staple Singers, died Tuesday. He was 84.
Staples had suffered a concussion recently in a fall near his home in suburban Dolton.
He and his group gained fame in the 1960s by singing music that urged social and religious change. He was known for both his songwriting and his guitar playing, in which he fused gospel with the blues.
Born to a poor Winona, Miss., family on 28th December, 1914, Staples dropped out of school after the eighth grade to pick cotton.
Staples sang with a gospel group, the Golden Trumpets, before moving with his wife, Oceala, to Chicago in 1936, where he performed with the Trumpet Jubilees.
Staples said his earliest exposure to music came in the church. It wasn't until he was in his teens that he heard the blues. He listed Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Blind Lemon Jefferson among his favorites.
Staples formed the group bearing his name in 1948. Originally composed of son Pervis and daughters

Musicians shine at Menlo festival
Musically, Connoisseur's Marketplace has always featured diversity. This year's lineup, however, extends the boundaries even further, as the festival lineup has more bands and more variety than ever before. Hurricane Sam Rudin and his merry band of hotshots like to describe their music as a "guaranteed sweaty good time for dancers." Often compared to blues greats Dr. John and Leon Russell, Rudin's accomplished but sometimes outrageous piano style is distinctively his own version of honky tonk with a smattering of jazz and folk. Anyone who loves the blues shouldn't miss Red Archibald and the Internationals. Their newest CD, "It Just Won't Go Away," was introduced by Dan Aykroyd on his House of Blues radio show and their sound was described recently in Blues Access magazine as "roadhouse tough and finger-snappin' solid." The signature performer in this high-energy act is Archibald, whose harmonica riffs are a real show-stopper. Jazz buffs will enjoy the mainstream jazz and fusion sounds of Marshall Art Shapiro and Friends and the swinging beats of jazz vocalist Joan Smith. Pianist Shapiro, a popular performer at local jazz clubs, started playing when he was 9 and hasn't stopped. Smith, whose career began in the choir of the Baptist Church, possesses a powerful voice and is backed by a solid combo of musicians who transport listeners on a musical journey from the '40s to the present. Capturing the style and essence of the '50s and '60s, The Charms are costumed and coiffed like the "girl groups" that dominated that era. The sensational instrumental/vocal group performs the upbeat music of Aretha Franklin, The Shirelles, and Gladys Knight, recreating the innocence and exuberance that marked that era.

This octogenarian from California studied with Henry Cowell, worked with John Cage, and was a champion of the music of Ives. Like many from the left-coast, (as Lush Rumbaugh would say) he has always been a rebel. After much experimentation with the new music forms of the twentieth century, he rejected them and went in search of other voices and flavors.
