Or, more specifically, that old comedian. It's Jerry Seinfeld, who next Wednesday will make his first TV appearance doing his stand-up act since his HBO special in August 1998. Seinfeld has made 41 guest appearances on the Letterman show, most recently singing "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" from "The Sound of Music" with "Seinfeld" pal Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The rock band Aerosmith will also appear on the show, two days after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Singer Kenny Rogers has sued his manager of 33 years after firing him two months ago. After 15 years, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra (SSO), under the baton of Music Director Daniel Hege, will return to the stage of Carnegie Hall on Saturday, April 5, 2003. This highly anticipated event features Stanislav Ioudenitch performing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, the work with which he won the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition The Carnegie Hall performance is the culmination of a tour that will take the SSO to eleven cities in the Northeast with programs featuring Mr. Ioudenitch as well as Olga Kern , the other 2001 Cliburn gold medalist. Ms. Kern performs Rachmainoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 during her SSO tour appearances. Of the selection of Mr. Ioudenitch to perform at Carnegie Hall , music director Daniel Hege says, "I am greatly anticipating working with this first-rate musician to breathe fresh life into one of the pillars of the piano concerto repertoire." In view of the long-standing relationship that exists between the orchestra and winners of the Van Cliburn Competition , it should come as no surprise that a recent gold medalist was invited to be part of the SSO's historic return to New York City's most venerable classical music venue. Twenty-three Cliburn laureates have performed with the Syracuse orchestra in the past nineteen seasons. In the current season alone, four

Feedback After the playing of first 24 participants we can draw conclusion that the Russian participants are objectively stronger than all foreign participants who played this day. Whether the preliminary selection has given the results or the talented foreign pianists have stopped to come to the Tchaikovsky competition? I think we should address all these questions to the Selection board that have admitted such untalented persons to take part in the competition (we haven’t heard performings of such a low level for a long time already). Anyway, presently our pianists show quite different performance level. In the other hand, if one would like to appraise Russian participants abstractly or compare them with each other, it is indeed possible to have this or that claim to lay to every one of them. The lack of the musical initiative and of the personal playing is the main shortcoming. Anonymous Press-center information
I would like you tell about the brightest impressions of two days. As a rule we remember the best and the worst. I begin from the second ones. The playing of Firsov E. (USA), Ivanov A. (Belorusia), Erzhakovsky R.(Kazahstan), Lim Chong NG (Malaysia) was quiet outstanding. Galios from Greece is a leader in this category of amateurs (so-called). It was for the first time when I heard the whistle in the grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. He has a "typical" appearance: cross-shoes, crimson shirt and a sincere indignation. If such persons (I don't want to call them by right names) it would be better to give the possibility to take part in such prestige competition to the pupils of our musical school, they play better.

Frederic Chopin's International Piano Competition (Warsaw)
One of the oldest competitions in the world. Initiated by Prof. Jerzy Zurawlew in 1927 and held every five years. The 13th competition took place in 1995; the first prize was not awarded, two second prize winners (Silver Medal plus $20,000) were Philippe Giusiano (France) and Alexei Sultanov (Russia). Special prizes for the best performances of polonaises, mazurkas and concertos were not awarded. The best Polish performer was Magdalena Lisak who won the sixth prize and $4,000. The competition is usually divided into four stages. In the first stage the contestants perform one nocturne and two etudes. Forty contestants appear in the second stage to perform one of the ballades, six consecutive preludes, a waltz and a polonaise. Fifteen contestants are admitted to the third stage; their program includes a cycle of mazurkas, and one sonata. In the final stage six contestants appear performing one of Chopin's piano concertos. The Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition
The Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition is one of the oldest events of its type in the world, and enjoys great prestige and universal renown. In the seventy years of its existence, the competition has evolved and transformed itself, altered and improved its form, and created its own extensive tradition. The initiator of the Frederick Chopin Piano Competition was Prof. Jerzy Zurawlew (1887-1980), an outstanding Polish pianist, teacher and composer.
    Prof. Jerzy ¯urawlew
The first Chopin Competition took place on 23-30 January 1927 in the concert hall of the Warsaw Philharmonic. The next Competitions in 1932 and 1937 were also held there, at a five year interval, in accordance with the rules of the organisers. The 1942 Competition was not held owing to the Second World War, and the Competition could not be continued until several years after the war. The first postwar and the fourth International Frederick Chopin Competition took place in 1949, in the "Roma" concert hall, which is still standing in Nowogrodzka Str., the temporary home of the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Opera. The Competition became the culmination of the Chopin Year, celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the death of this great composer. The next Competition was organised six years later, in 1955. This change to the traditional five year-cycle was caused by the reconstruction of the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, which was promoted soon afterwards to the rank of a national institution. From 1955 onwards, the Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition has been held in the National Philharmonic Hall every five years without a break.

Sometimes creativity and technology go hand-in-hand. And sometimes, the creative spirit outpaces the capabilities of technology. Such was the case when George Antheil wrote his now infamous The Carnegie Hall premiere in 1927, with a dozen pianists plus percussion, propellers and sirens, was a far cry from what the composer intended. That performance, which Antheil called "a three-ring circus," substituted live pianists for a group of synchronized player pianos.Player pianos with paper roles were too imprecise to meet the composer's expectations. Antheil revised the piece several times during his lifetime, but was never able to realize his original dream of synchronizing multiple mechanized pianos. Yamaha Corporation of America . The Disklavier is a computerized "hybrid" piano that offers the best of both wordsa fine acoustic piano and the ability to record and play back performances note-for-note, with its keys and pedals moving up and down, as on the classic player pianos of old. In fact, its sophisticated system of fiber-optic sensors track the movements of the piano's hammers, keys and pedals while capturing every nuance of performance in digital form, on the same 3.5-inch floppy disks used in personal computers. The result is a technological marvel that not only makes Antheil's dream possible, but also offers endless educational, entertainment, and research applications.

The Cliburn medalists: Where are they now?

The number of Cliburn medalists will grow to 30 in a few weeks. Of the 27 already on the list, there is one bona fide superstar Radu Lupu and one who's very close Barry Douglas and a number who may yet attain that status Alexander Toradze, Jose Feghali, Alexei Sultanov, Vladimir Viardo. Some have settled into comfortable performing careers; some have settled into comfortable faculty jobs. Others have been struck by tragedy. One has died. One has only recently recovered from a five-year bout with cancer. One of the youngest has suffered a mild stroke and fights chronic hypertension. But, for the Cliburn Competition, the search for the musical heir of Van Cliburn, the pianist who combines charisma and musicality, continues.
