Co-founder of the British under-ground band Henry Cow (1968-78), he moved to New York in the late seventies and came into contact with many of the musicians with whom he's since been associated, including, for example, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Tom Cora, Zeena Parkins, and Bob Ostertag. Fourteen years in New York gave rise to groups like Massacre (with Bill Laswell and Fred Maher), Skeleton Crew (with Tom Cora and Zeena Parkins), and Keep the Dog, a sextet performimg an extensive repertoire of Frith's compositions.

Aki Takase
pianist,composer
Born in Japan, grew up in Tokyo, lessons ofpiano since she was 3 years old, later onstudies of music at Tohogakuen Music University. Started her professional career as piano player and composer, worked together with many famous Japanese musicians, founded her first own trio. Since 1978 several stays in the USA. Many concerts and recordings with David Liebman, Lester Bowie, Joe Henderson, Cecil McBee, Sheila Jordan, Nils Henning Orsted Pedersen. 1981 first concert in Germany at Jazzfestival Berlin/Philharmonie. Intensive work with Alexander von Schlippenbach and other musicians of the European New Jazz. Many very successful project with David Murray, Tokio Stringquartet, Nobuyoshi Ino and Berlin Contemporary Orchestra. Aki Takase was playing with Maria João in Duo from 1988 until 1994; concerts in nearly all important international jazz festivals (Moers, Montreux, Berlin, Firenze, Perpignan, Mulhouse, Stuttgart, Molde, Oslo, Tokio, Montréal, Athen, a.o.). In 1994 she toured with the ex-Coltrane musicians Rashed Ali and Reggie Workman, founded a septet with Japanese musicians (European tour and recording during the fall 1994, concerts at Berlin and Leverkusen Jazzfestivals), created music for a string quartet (tour with Tristan Honsinger a.o. during the fall of 1995) and continued her solo and duo (with Alexander von Schlippenbach) performances.

N ow we come to this CD, which was recorded in the studio of a German radio station in Berlin after the tour concluded on October 10th. I have a feeling this recording was scheduled to take place under the best conditions after a complete warm up during the tour. Takase Aki previously recorded a CD with ENJA Records of Germany, but for this album she has chosen the OMAGATOKI label of Japan. It appears to have been strongly recommended by two of the members, Katayama Hiroaki and Hayashi Eiichi who have already released albums under this label.
I am only stating the facts, and almost all of the space has been used up already, but since this album is the maiden recording of this septet and it will earn a place in history, I wanted to make the background as clear as possible. As you can see, if you are a jazz fan the historical facts are more important than anything else. The music speaks for itself - therefore a music critic does not have to go into detail regarding his sentiments about the music.
I n conclusion, I'd like to add a few words for those who have not yet seen the performance of this septet. I believe that the giant masters of music in history would all agree with me when I state that band leaders are concerned with how they can let the members of their band (whom they have dragged into their own personal amusement park!) express themselves freely and how they can showcase their individual personalities. Think of Duke Ellington, Charlie Mingus, Gill Evans, Miles Davis - each band has its own sound, yet provides a venue for each member to express their full personality. Takase Aki's septet is the 90's expression of this ideal. Following the tradition of jazz, she has pulled together an ensemble from a free, easy, and broad vanguard of jazz players who have rounded out the Republic of Jazzmen.

Christine Wodrascka (piano), Ramon Lopez (drums) Takase, Karayorgis and Wodrascka are all firm-handed pianists who take jazz seriously. The first two owe something two Monk who doesn't? but their languages are quite different despite some superficial similarities; Wodrascka is more distant from the jazz tradition, but this is still very much jazz music rather than something else. Riley is, if course, an established player with an international reputation; while comparisons with the younger players are unfair, there's clearly some common ground here among them all. Takase is all over the keyboard; she has more Cecil Taylor in her playing than first appears. There are none of the great galloping chromatic runs which pianists employ so liberally these days, however, and it's the older man's sense of jazz harmony which seems to have made an impact on Takase. The fifteen improvisations here are freewheeling and rather wild for the most part, but the complete confidence of touch which powers them along is wedded to a cunning thematic approach to developing material and one never feels that the music is slipping away from her.

COMING ON THE HUDSON LOCOMOTIVE WORK ... LIGHT BLUE This is a Monk collection by a Germany pianist/composer Alexander von Schlippenbach with a Japanese bassist Ino Nobuyoshi and Sunny Murray. Ino has often played with Schlippenbach's wife Takase Aki for long time. Moreover, his motifs arise as if born of themselves; self-perpetuating melodic lines and thematic thoughts in a free atonality, that allow playing outside the form, just as they also permit a return to the form. First, cautious steps on the way to imporivisation - more over an abstraction of the thematic though than over the changes. There are musically-grounded impulses that lead particular pieces in this direction.

Babatunde Lea Welcome to AAJ! New to Jazz? Building a Jazz Library History of Jazz ... Jazz Humor Concert Posters Nine Fragments
Pianist Aki Takase (Japan), violinist Aleksander Kolkowski (England) and drummer Tony Buck (Australia) embark upon a series of abstracts that often elicits notions of the avant-garde cinema. Hence, the music is visual, yet undeniably ethereal in scope. As the trio’s moniker, “Dempa” signifies the Japanese word for “electrical wave.” With this release, the musicians integrate live electronics among other instruments and methodologies into the mix. They abide by a dynamic improvisational approach, teeming with weird effects and a credo that seemingly demands a plethora of subtle surprises. Moreover, they intersperse sequences of humor into the grand scheme of things. And an overall gait that might spark visions of a shifting weathervane caught up in a pattern of turbulent crosswinds. On “Nine Fragments,” Ms. Takase melds off kilter stride piano with imprecise excerpts from the Gershwin songbook. While the musicians also integrate otherworldly sounds with spoken word. A study in contrasts for sure, however the band also touches upon chamber and free jazz in addition to pursuing frenetic three-way discourses. The overall strangeness of this recording is topped off by the musicians’ lighthearted approach amid a jumble of unanticipated thematic excursions. Recommended…
