"MUMADGI"
Available for Italien Festivals Summer 2001 german info
Her voice seems to be, at the same time strange and natural, and Mário Laginha´s piano sounds perfect for the many influences of Maria João, who never ventures too far from here Portugese backround. Her amazing ability to transform delicate musical structures into tones, words and whispers is singular and simply amazing.
Mumadgi is the word used in the Changana dialect of Mozambique, to define a Portuguese European. From January 2001 Mumadgi is also the name Maria João e Mário Laginha will be using to identify their joint project. To join them, they invited two of the musicians who participated on the recordings of their last album – the brasilian Toninho Ferragutti and the Norwegian Helge Norbakken. A new album recorded live in Barcelona and Oporto will be release in 2001. The repertoire will be mainly from "Chorinho Feliz" and "Cor" albums. Concerts in the year 2000 were performed in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Washington, Paris, Rio, Munich, Berlin, Weimar, Grorizia, Dublin, and of course in many places in Portugal.

Aki Takase , piano
Rudi Mahall , bass clarinet Aki Takase and Rudi Mahall. The celebrated Japanese pianist Aki Takase has lived in Germany since 1981, collaborating with the most prestigious jazz artists on the world scene. It was in 1996, too, that she first teamed up on stage with the young German bass clarinettist Rudi Mahall who, despite his classical clarinet training, comes from the world of contemporary music and improvisation. The duo's tight-knit collaboration, with one foot in the modern and the other in the avant-garde, is based on works by Thelonious Monk and Eric Dolphy amongst others, all treated with freedom, intelligence, passion and humour. One of the most exciting projects to have emerged in recent years.

Recorded by Kimio Oikawa.
Mastered by Keilo Ueda.
The Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra (heard previously on albums on ECM and FMP) is one of the most adventurous and creative jazz ensembles in the world, led by two pillars of post-Monk, post-Cecil Taylor piano: Aki Takase (Enja recording artist) and Alexander von Schlippenbach, an astounding pianist and founder of the groundbreaking Globe Unity Orchestra. In this recording of a 1996 concert in Tokyo, the 18-piece big band includes long-time Schlippenbach cohorts Evan Parker and Paul Lovens, and trombonist Paul Rutherford, all giants of European free jazz. In addition to breath-taking improvisations and original compositions by Schlippenbach and Takase, the concert features an Eric Dolphy medley (arranged by Takase) and a couple of surprises W.C. Handy's "Way Down South" (arranged by Schlippenbach) and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye" (Benny Goodman's closing theme, here arranged by Willem Breuker).

„Ein Jazzkonzert auf Weltklasseniveau“, so enthusiastisch äußerten sich die Nürnberger Nachrichten anläßlich eines Konzerts der Boperators. Diese Formation hat sich, wie der Name verrät, dem Bebop verschrieben. Die Musik von Dizzy, Bird, Monk und Bud Powell ist die Inspirationsquelle für diese fünf Musiker, die mit selten zu hörender Konsequenz, Stilsicherheit und Virtuosität Bebop neu und aufregend darbieten.
