Tony has recorded most of these latter artists at his Brooklyn home studio, helping to foster and document a tight-knit, intimate scene of players who are as skilled and daring as they are broadminded and modest.
Originally hailing from New Haven, CT, Tony played rock guitar in a garage band with his brother Peter Scherr as teens, before the two went their seperate ways Peter to become a concert bassist and film composer, and Tony to slug it out in the clubs of New York, ironically as primarily a bassist himself. His debut album Come Around is a reunion of sorts, between the two brothers, between Tony and the electric guitar, and between the brothers and the rock/song idiom. The lyrical content in particular also charts a deeply personal journey, documenting a process of overcoming catastrophe and a renewed faith in the healing power of music. Above all else, the album serves as a message of hope.

#22 Boxhead Ensemble, "Send in the Clowns"
Oldham did his homework. His subversions are smart. He knows enough about the song that he turns the waltz into a tango, remolding Sondheim's lavender-scented nostalgia into something very mysterioso , very acoustic guitar. And he stays true to the song's guiding trapeze metaphor while recasting it as a stalker song with the addition of a new verse: "Isn't it mumble/don't you have fear/I'd never ever let go/of you my dear." But he sings it just like Will Oldham always does, plumbing the depths of his actor soul. I'm durn playin' me a HICK! A DISTURBED HICK! Wait, wait...A DISTURBED CHILD HICK! Giving out a fierce fluttery soul whine, the kind that would get you stares and medical attention were you to do it in the middle of a street, protesting the existential void of nothingness in the pit of his soul! Which also happens to be nothing, too!
morally suspect method of grabbing the attention of those parts of our brain that, through a gazillion years of evolution, have become hypersensitive to those kinds of things.

Scattering Poems ACT 9405-2 / LC 07644
Release date: 27.01.2003
Julia Hülsmann is a most remarkable pianist on the contemporary German jazz scene. She has absorbed the tradition and now plays with the building blocks of the music. "She doesn't just haphazardly throw styles together, like so many players her age. Instead, she remains respectful of the foundation - the melody", wrote DIE WELT, one of Germany’s most influential newspapers. With unerring taste, the pianist combines the most diverse influences: the impressionism of a Ravel, pop music from Sting, the jazz piano tradition from Monk to Hancock and beyond. Born in Bonn in 1968, Hüsmann studied at the Berlin College of the Arts under such masters as Walter Norris, Aki Takase, and David Friedman, and in New York with Maria Schneider, Richie Beirach, Gil Goldstein, and Jane Ira Bloom. She was a member of Germany's renowned National Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer, and made a name for herself as keyboard player in diverse big bands, fusion formations, and pop groups. Her trio, which she formed in 1997, is considered by jazz enthusiasts to be one of the most subtle and distinctive bands in the German capital. For "Scattering Poems" Julia was able to acquire the talents of bassist Marc Muellbauer along with drummer Heinrich Köbberling.

Seventh of May 2001: Freedom of the city
Matchless
Keeping up with contemporary improvised European music has never been an easy task from North America. Heck, considering the combination of obscurity and disdain that greets most intelligent music on this continent, keeping up with local improvisers is difficult enough.
That's why these two releases are particularly valuable. Not only do they provide a snapshot of what was happening on that Continent during 2001, but over the three CDs you can sample 18 different bands featuring both veteran explorers and tyro improv investigators. Furthermore, despite the EU and the euro, that body of water that separated Great Britain from the Continent still makes a difference. You'll hear how, as it has been for years, BritImprov is still a lot different than EuroImprov.
One rational for this is that Seventh of May, recorded in London, centres on sound recorded by Matchless, the label associated with AMM and pure, almost limitless improv. Meanwhile Audiology was recorded in November 2001 in Berlin by the FMP label, which usually releases the sort of harsher, more unbending improv associated with Northern Europe. In truth, some of the most diffuse sounds on that disc come from IST, the one British band represented, if repeating the fact isn't trafficking in geographical stereotypes.

Live New Releases News ... Basin Street Records 5th Anniversary Party Festival International Musique Actuelle
May 16-20, 2002 - Victoriaville, Québec By Josef Woodard

Running a festival with a focus on the cutting edge gets to be risky business, especially if said festival survives beyond its youthful stages. This lesson has been learned, in ways both hard and logical, by the dense springtime foray known as Festival International Musique Actuelle, aka FIMAV, or Victo. By whatever name, the festival is something special, and evolving. Now on the cusp of next year's 20th anniversary, FIMAV celebrates its status as one of the most unique avant-garde fests in the Americas, falling in some netherzone between the jazz left, the rock fringes, electronica, and contemporary "art music." And all of this in a modest-sized town in Quebec's Bois Francs region, amidst rolling hills dotted with dairy farms. Two hours outside of Montreal, Victoriaville is just close enough to a thriving urban scene to tap into its audience and artist base, and just far enough away to be a cultural entity of its volition and design.

Sound and piano. Gift and delivery. Attention and listening. Mário Laginha unfolds the maps over the piano that Maria João lifts up and uses to chart voyages to often unexplored lands. "World music" in the broadest sense of the term. Perhaps. But also a world in constant mutation, not only in physical terms but also, above all, an interior world that goes beyond mere forms and risks at each instant to discover the "I"s that musical creation invents and recreates.
