Lisa-Bassenge-Trio ANDREAS SCHMIDT Pianist Komponist Arrangeur Diskographie Pressestimmen BIOGRAPHIE 1987 trifft er auf die japanische Pianistin Aki Takase und auf den amerikanischen Pianisten Walter Norris, die ihn beide unterrichten; sie ermutigen ihn, sich ganz dem Klavierspiel zu widmen. 1994 trifft Andreas Schmidt den amerikanischen Saxophonisten Lee Konitz. Aus dieser Begegnung entwickelt sich einige Zeit später die CD "Haiku". Gemeinsam mit dem Schlagzeuger Jerry Granelli und dem Bassklarinettisten Rudi Mahall spielen Konitz und Schmidt ausschließlich Kompositionen des jungen Berliner Pianisten. Im selben Jahr wird die CD bei Nabel Records veröffentlicht. Sie sorgt für Aufsehen und wird von verschiedenen Radiosendern in Berlin, Köln und Hamburg vorgestellt. Es erscheinen u.a. Rezensionen in den Zeitschriften "Jazzthing" und "Jazzthetik". Aufmerksamkeit erfährt die CD auch in dem Buch "Jazz in Deutschland" (Darmstädter Beiträge zur Jazzforschung, Band 4). Der Musikwissenschaftler Dr. Ulrich Kurth bespricht die CD im Kapitel "Kurze Geschichten: Die 90er". Ins Jahr 1995 fällt auch die erste persönliche Begegnung mit dem amerikanischen Pianisten Paul Bley, mit dem Andreas Schmidt seither freundschaftlich verbunden ist. Bley regt die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Schmidt und dem amerikanischen Bassisten Gary Peacock an; als gemeinsames Projekt entsteht die CD "berlin,1999". Hier fließen die improvisatorische Energie von Peacock und die komponierte Avantgarde von Schmidt ineinander. Seine Idee, einen CD-Spieler als originelles Mittel bei der Gruppenimprovisation zu nutzen, setzt er auf der CD "berlin, 1999" konsequent um.

Vokalakrobatin trifft Klavier-Virtuosen Drei Alben und unzählige Live-Auftritte mit dem portugiesischen Quintett, das ihren Namen trug, begründeten ihre internationale Karriere. Eines ihrer ersten Konzerte in Deutschland wurde vom ZDF aufgezeichnet und gesendet, für ein junges Talent wie sie, noch zu dem aus der oft als sperrig bezeichneten Sparte "Jazz", eine nicht zu unterschätzende Starthilfe. Mário Laginha hatte zuvor gemeinsam mit dem heutigen Madredeus-Gitarristen José Peixoto in der Gruppe "Cal Viva" gespielt. Auch Maria João hatte seit 1991 Kontakt zu der Gruppe, bis sie 1994 schließlich mit Laginha das erste gemeinsame Album veröffentlichte: "Danças", ein sehr ehrgeizige Produktion, bei dem Maria João vor dem Hintergrund des Klavierspiels von Mário Laginha den Facettenreichtum ihres Gesangs vollends ausspielen und die Grenzen des stimmlich Möglichen ausloten konnte. Dem auf das Wesentliche begrenzte Vokal+Piano-Album "Danças" folgte dann der erste große Wurf in Sachen Weltmusik: Unter Beteiligung des indischen Percussionisten Trilok Gurtu veröffentlichten Maria João und Mário Laginha 1998 ein Album, mit dem sie die Wege der portugiesischen Eroberer nach Ostasien nachvollzogen, indem sie die unterschiedlichen kulturellen Einflüsse des indischen Subkontinents mit portugiesischen Rhythmen zusammen brachten. "Cor", so der Titel des Albums, war ein offizielles Projekt zur Expo 1998 in Lissabon.

Improvised Music from Japan / Kyoko Kuroda Profile Pianist Kyoko Kuroda was born November 20, 1957 in Tokyo, Japan. She started playing piano as a young child, and studied with a classical music teacher until she was 17. While at university, she became fascinated by Noh (a type of traditional Japanese theater) and became involved in playing Noh music, an experience which continues to influence her music today. Kuroda began playing jazz in 1982, studying for two years with pianist Aki Takase. In 1984 she began playing in public venues, and performed with bassist Yoshio Ikeda throughout 1985. In January of '86 she formed her quartet BAHR with alto sax player Atsushi Ikeda, bassist Shinichi Kato and drummer Masayuki Kume. The group, led by Kuroda, remained together for about a year and a half, playing mainly her original tunes at jazz clubs such as Shinjuku Pit Inn. From autumn 1987 to winter 1990, Kuroda directed a workshop called ORT. The participants were musicians such as Atsushi Ikeda, tenor sax and flute player Makoto Oka, trombonist Yoichi Murata and turntable and guitar player Yoshihide Otomo, as well as several theater actresses. The purpose of the workshop was to develop music which transcends genres, and open up the possibilities of musical activity. (ORT's live performance of 1988 was released as a cassette tape called ORT , and its 1990 studio recording was included in an omnibus CD, Now's the Time Workshop, Vol. 1
