April 13, 1997 Jean-Yves Thibaudet "Conversations with Bill Evans" (London) Here is one of the silliest CDs in recent memory. Jean-Yves Thibaudet, a gifted classical pianist, performs transcriptions of songs and improvisations by jazz great Bill Evans. These beautiful tunes underscore the influence of Debussy and Ravel on Evans, but the performances are lifeless, like art-school copies of famous paintings. Thibaudet doesn't improvise, but that's just part of the trouble. The pulse at the heart of jazz even rubato ballad playing is absent, and in those few spots where Thibaudet is supposed to swing he sounds like a clumsy robot. One transcription in the context of a recital is a nice idea, but listening to 12 in a row is a waste of time when you could be digging Evans himself. His name is Jean-Yves Thibaudet. I've been aware of him being lauded as a great interpreter of Rachmaninoff, but have shied away from even listening to one of his recordings for a few years, because I feared the letdown would be too great, should he not live up to expectations (my breaking point came a couple of years ago, when I started hearing about this "wonderful new pianist, David Helfgott." I bought his CD of Rachmaninoff's Third Psycho That spiel off my chest; now back to Thibaudet: His understanding of Rachmaninoff is totally intuitive Thibaudet's performance of the Fourth Concerto exemplifies this observation. A very difficult piece to perform properly, this is the most satisfying recording I've heard of it, aside from the composer's own. Although the Fourth is generally thought of as a "heavy" concerto (especially as performed by Rachmaninoff and Ormandy), Thibaudet's touch is the very essence of light. He does not play with as heavy a hand as his accompanist, Vladimir Ashkenazy, did in his excellent 1984 recording with Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. If I'd been looking for adventurous classical musicians, Jean-Yves Thibaudet might have caught my eye at the Metropolitan Opera, acting a role onstage in Giordano's faded but irresistible old warhorse Fedora . Or I might have noticed him performing Schubert impromptus in the film version of Portrait of a Lady. Or I might have been intrigued by his latest CD, on which he plays music by jazz great Bill Evans. But what got my attention was his 1995 recording of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto. Normally that piece is played by romantic piano titans, and in some ways Mr. Thibaudet is one, at least in firepower. He commands the instrument, exploding huge cascades of notes, apparently with little effort. Yet at the same time he's restrained, almost intellectual. What makes his performance work (apart from its bracing virtuosity) is focus and intelligence, along with a disarmingly delicate, almost innocent touch when the music gets quiet. So on April 20 I was at Avery Fisher Hall, to hear Mr. Thibaudet play his biggest New York recital yet. He sat at the piano, hesitated briefly with his hands over the keys, and then traced a sound that could have been a pencil sketch of a shimmer in the air. This was the start of Debussy's second book of Preludes, a courageous opening for a concert in such a huge space. Mr. Thibaudet's courage paid off; unassumingly, he drew the space toward him. But after the second prelude, there was a sound like muttered thunder, the footsteps of late arrivals pounding to their seats. The pianist seemed to glare, restrained himself, and then resumed luckily the third prelude is assertive, and gave him energy only to be interrupted twice again. His quiet clarity helped keep the music's spell intact, though here I missed the sound that's not in his Rachmaninoff. I would have liked a kind of golden poetry that might have brought each of the dozen preludes into a world of its own. I could hear Mr. Thibaudet shaping separate worlds, but they emerged in black and white. I wanted color.

MSO: Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano Program Copland: Suite from The Tender Land Khachaturian: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra Symphony in D Minor Performers Madison Symphony Orchestra Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano John DeMain, conductor Two 20th-century works opened the Madison Symphony Orchestra's second subscription pair at the Oscar Mayer Theatre, Copland's suite from The Tender Land and the Khachaturian piano concerto. Neither of these works, however, would be likely to offend the tastes of musical conservatives, who in any case got their lengthy due in the form of the Franck Symphony that concluded the program. Audiences for these concerts continue to be large and enthusiastic. In 1958, Copland excerpted an orchestral suite from his 1954 made-for-television opera The Tender Land (cancelled before it could be performed). The three sections of the orchestral work derive from various scenes of the opera and incorporate the composer's "open" style of setting folk-music elements, drawing upon the resources of a large orchestra. There is, unsurprisingly, considerable modernity in the suite: complex rhythms, large-scale dissonance and subtle orchestration. By far the most successful is the closing section, "The Promise of Living." However, the purely orchestral arrangement fails to convey the emotional content of this music in the context of the opera itself, where it is set as a vocal quintet that closes the first of the three acts and establishes a deeply affecting aura of hopefulness that the drama's subsequent action will dissipate. That said, the MSO gave a first-rate performance of the music, a style for which DeMain has a particular affinity, I think.

Hierdoor ontstond het idee om het pianowerk van Satie integraal op te nemen. Het werden zes volumes, waarvan het eerste album de titel meekreeg: The Magic of Satie. Ik ben werkelijk in de ban geraakt van deze componist die eigenlijk nooit de plaats heeft gekregen die hij verdiende, nooit erkend is geworden als ‘ernstig’ componist naast Debussy of Ravel. Men beseft niet hoe belangrijk hij is geweest. Hij was een visionair musicus. Sommige van zijn partituren uit het begin van de 20ste eeuw hebben John Cage in de jaren 1950 geïnspireerd. Als u het mij vraagt, was Satie de eerste minimalist. U begrijpt dat ik na een integrale van Ravel en Debussy dit parcours van Franse componisten heb willen voortzetten met een artiest als Satie.
