Web Search On the Aisle INDEX Thibaudet to Die For By Philip Anson / February 7, 2001 On the Aisle Jean Yves Thibaudet Carnegie Hall Feb. 7, 2001 French pianist Jean Yves Thibaudet made a triumphant Carnegie Hall solo debut on Feb. 7 with an all-French program that will be remembered as one of the highlights of the concert year. Thibaudet has played many concertos at Carnegie Hall, most recently a rather lacklustre Ravel Concerto for the Left Hand with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (Oct. 21, 2000), but his solo debut at 39 years of age has been long-overdue. The program concluded with a breathtaking performance of Regard de l’eglise d’amour, the last movement of Olivier Messiaen’s Vingt regards sur l’enfant Jesus. Thibaudet dissected the technical difficulties with astounding precision, and served up the morsels of Messiaen’s holy music like a priest or chef. Greeted by a well merited ovation, Thibaudet played several delicious encores: Liszt’s transcription of Isolde’s Liebestod from Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde", a Chopin waltz, and two works by Duke Ellington and Bill Evans. It all ended too soon, this rollercoaster ride of emotions from funereal tragedy to jazzy joy.

Joshua Bell
Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Joshua Bell received his first violin at age five and became seriously committed to the instrument by age twelve, when he mad the privilege to meet renowned violinist and pedagogue Josef Gingold, who became his beloved teacher and mentor. In 1981, he made his highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Since that time, Mr. Bell has performed with the world's leading symphony orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra of London and the London Symphony. He has had the opportunity to work with such conductors as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, John Eliot Gardiner, James Levine, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Yuri Temirkanov and Franz Welser-Most. Joshua Bell performs over 100 concerts each season worldwide, including concerto appearances, solo recitals and chamber music. He is interested in exploring the work of living composers and recently performed the world premieres of two pieces written for him: a violin concerto by renowned British composer Nicholas Maw, and Air for violin and piano by American composer Aaron Jay Kernis. Mr. Bell is unique among his peers in that he has begun composing his own cadenzas for the major violin concertos. His cadenzas for the Brahms, Beethoven and Mozart concertos have received consistent praise from conductors and critics alike. He also enjoys chamber music collaborations and performs frequently with close friends and colleagues such as Pamela Frank, Steven Isserlis, Olli Mustonen, Jon Kimura Parker and Jean Yves-Thibaudet.
