Mr. Tselyakov's Biography
Award-winning Russian-Canadian concert pianist Alexander Tselyakov has been described as a "phenomenal pianist" (Germany), having "an intoxicating sound" (Israel), and "a perfect artistic individuality" (Russia). He began his concert career with the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Orchestra in his native Soviet Union at the age of nine. Alexander Tselyakov went on to win one of the leading prizes at the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition, the International Music Competition of Japan, the Ibla Grand Prize International Piano Competition and the Mazara del Vallo International Piano and Orchestra Competition in Italy, Israel Competition and the New Orleans International Piano Competition. His playing has inspired standing ovations in Japan, Germany, Italy, Israel, Spain, Portugal, France, England, Finland, the United States and in Canada where he now makes his home. While still in Russia Tselyakov was appointed concert solo pianist with the Byelorussia State Philharmonic and assistant Professor of Music at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. After moving to Israel in 1991, Tselyakov continued to impress audiences and critics alike. Several more important prizes followed along with recitals for such dignitaries as Michael Gorbachev and the late Yitzhak Rabin.

Alexander Tselyakov, yet another Russian with impressive credentials, appeared in a solo recital in San Jose at Le Petit Trianon on Friday evening, November 3. Tselyakov, a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, and a laureate in the 1986 Tchaikowsky International Piano Competition, is an impressive pianist. Displaying a technique that is powerful and all encompassing, it would seem that there is virtually nothing that he cannot do at the keyboard. But, therein lies a problem, for during this concert his virtuosity constantly got in the way of the music.
The concert began with Mozart's Sonata in F Major, K.332, and it certainly began well. However, on the first page, when the Sturm und Drang passage in D minor marked forte entered, Tselyakov played so loudly that ugly, jarring sounds emanated from the piano that marred the lovely mood he had initially created. This was to be a characteristic that recurred often during this concert. It was also obvious that Tselyakov is not aware of some of the finer aspects of Mozart scholarship, for he consistently played appoggiaturas like crushed grace notes in the first movement of the Mozart and in the second movement opted for the autograph version of the recapitulation rather than the splendidly ornamented version from the revised first edition- certainly one of the most glorious examples of Mozart's skill as an improviser. Otherwise, Tselyakov's playing in the slow movement was lovely. A beautiful cantabile and exquisitely shaped phrases demonstrated how very beautifully he can play when he is not trying to showing off his splendid technique.

A lexander Tselyakov will be the Ladies' Morning Musical Club's guest on April 22. Prizewinner at the Tokyo (in 1983) and Tchaikovsky (in 1986) competitions, this Russian pianist, member of a musical family, now makes his home in Toronto. Called by critics "phenomenal," "a brilliant virtuoso," but also "a fine original colorist," he still retains the influence of the Russian tradition of virtuosity and lushness of sound. He has recorded CDs, done several radio broadcasts and performs regularly here and abroad. Despite his grueling touring schedule — he spends 10 to 12 hours practicing, but still finds it is not enough! — he was able to spare a few moments and granted La Scena Musicale this interview. La Scena Musicale: Why did you choose the piano? Alexander Tselyakov: I started piano when I was four years old. My mother was my first teacher. Being very creative, she tried to find different ways to make piano lessons interesting and enjoyable. For example, she drew pictures and asked me to draw as well, told me stories and asked me create stories about what I played. More importantly she taught me to work hard. Like any kid, I wanted to play outside with my friends instead of spending hour after hour playing the piano. However, she was strict with me and I am thankful for that. I had my first recital when I was six years old, playing Tchaikovsky's

What's Happening NOW in Saint John ... April 2003 April 1 - Shape of a Girl Green Thumb Theatre presents The Shape of a Girl by Joan MacLeod. Part of the J.D. Irving, Limited Discovery Program for Students. For grades 7-12. (ages 13 and up). Braidie is fascinated by a TV news story of a young woman accused of a shocking act of violence, "a monster in the shape of a girl". A different kind of girl from her and her friends...or is she? Will Braidie find the courage to step in when bullying of a classmate goes too far? This intensely dramatic play is loosely based on the Reena Virk stork, and while subject matter is a serious one, the script has plenty of humour and a hope-filled ending. 1 pm. Imperial Theatre , 24 King Square South. (506) 674-4100. April 2 - AHL Hockey Saint John Flames vs. Springfield. 7:30 pm. Harbour Station , 99 Station Street. (506) 657-1234. April 3 - MacKinnon’s Brook Suite - featuring Ian McKinnon and Symphony Nova Scotia. In 1817, the MacKinnon family left the Scottish Highlands to cross the sea and carve a new home in the Mabou Highlands of Cape Breton, N.S.. Over time their home became known as MacKinnon’s Brook. Today, generations later, descendant Ian McKinnon has collaborated with composer Scott Macmillan to create an extraordinary five movement Celtic-Symphonic suite that celebrates the life journey of this immigrant family. Drawing from original composition and traditional Gaelic tunes, MacKinnon’s Brook Suite combines the grand orchestral sweep of Symphony Nova Scotia, the only fully professional symphony orchestra east of Quebec City, with solo artists Ian McKinnon on Highland pipes and tin whistle and David Greenberg on Cape Breton fiddle. Winner of the 2002 ECMA Best Classical Recording. Single ticket prices: $35, $30, $25. 8 pm.

Alexander Tselyakov, piano
Sunday December 8, 2002, 2:30p.m. Critics rave about the award-winning Russian-Canadian pianist: "phenomenal pianist ... and intoxicating sound ... a perfect artistic individuality." Alexander Tselyakov combines virtuosity with breath-taking musicality in the tradition of the great Russian pianists. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Tselyakov's studies took him to the Moscow studio of Lev Naumov, custodian of the teaching methods of Heinrich Neuhaus, the great keyboard pedagogue and teacher of Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter. An artist of unusual intellect, Tselyakov possesses the three cornerstones of keyboard mastery: tone, touch and technique. This magnificent pianist beguiles his audiences with his phenomenal keyboard technique and warmly expressive musicality.

Though technically brilliant, Tselyakov's performance lacked radiance. Tselyakov was at his best with the Chopin selections and Rachmaninoff's Sonata No. 2, Op. 36. These compositions had memorable individual character, profoundly beautiful in their meditative and expressive qualities. The Barcarole, Op. 60 has preciously little to do with Venetian gondoliers, but instead displayed Tselyakov's control of tone and sonority, sustained notes and silence; the "Revolutionary" Etude, Op. 10, No. 12 revealed Tselyakov's leaning toward the song-like line and simple statement; after the subdued Nocturne, Op. 27, No. 1, the audience withheld applause, so delicate was the mood evoked; and the catchy Scherzo, Op. 31 elicited an almost inhuman kind of virtuoso prestidigitation from Tselyakov. His three prepared encores were in a similarly poetic vein: short musical pieces of distinct character and often impressionistic intensity. (The popular vote for Best Encore, perhaps even Highlight of the Evening, probably goes to Chopin's Prelude in G Major.) Rachmaninoff's Sonata No. 2, op. 36 like his other sonatas and concerti, presents a challenge many pianists face with sweating hands and racing pulses. Tselyakov's considerable talent met the demand of the difficult, but rewarding music. Unlike the Chopin selections, the Sonata is more dense, its harmony more shifting and its melodic lines written more subtly into the harmonic structure. The obvious focal point of the evening's program, Tselyakov closed with an excellently prepared and finely executed rendition of this piece. His down-to-business approach unleashed the dynamic of the music, its straining thematic development and gradual evolution. The ensuing applause was generous and vigorous, not least of all for Rachmaninoff (one of this century's considerably underrated composers).
