cd 2: 45'54 Comments: Krzysztof Lorentz said: 'Bach manual' by Rosalyn Tureck. Whoever wants to know exactly every note of Goldberg Variations should listen to this recording. Gould fans will be happy. And this 2CD album is in CD-pluscore format - extra CD-ROM features are added (score, MIDI files, illustrations...). Highly recommended. Rich Rosenwald said: The 84-year old Rosalyn Tureck is AMAZING in this. Not only can you her her magnificent playing, but you can also watch it with the score on CD-Rom computer systems. This uses the latest technology DG has implemented in a select few of their recordings. This is the latest release using the 'CD Plusscore' system. It is a must for both fans of bach and ones who have interest in music on the computer at the same time. Perfect addition to anyone missing the Goldberg Variations in their Bach collection (like me). This CD should be availiable in March 1999 according to PolyGram, but I got a copy from overseas really cheap due to the fact that it was a new release in February 1999.

Rosalyn Tureck, the Theremin, Moog Synthesiser and Electronic Piano
Six years later, I arrived in New York, having received a scholarship at the Juillard Graduate School. In my first week at Juillard, I saw a notice on the bulletin board announcing that Theremin was in New York and offering one scholarship to study his electronic instruments with him. My impression of his instruments was unforgettable so I went down immediately for an audition and won the scholarship. I studied with him for an entire year, and it is still little known that I made my debut at the age of seventeen at Carnegie Hall, playing a Theremin electronic instrument in a program that Theremin presented in New York that Spring, 1932. At that time Clara Rockmore became involved with playing the 'Theremin'. She had been a successful concert violinist, but developed some trouble with her hands and could not go on playing the violin. On discovering the Theremin she turned to that and she brought an extraordinary talent, musicianship and adaptability to this instrument. I shall never forget her joint recital with Paul Robeson at the Town Hall in New York. Clara played Bach solo violin sonatas on the Theremin and was able to do double-stops on the instrument, a marvellous technical feat. Lucy Bigelow-Rosen was Theremin's chief patroness, and at that time she financed his operation and activities in New York. She also indulged in some performances on the Theremin.

I found them superbly played: total command, full identification with the idiom, fantastic part playing, and a dry sound which suits the performances perfectly. Most impressive, Tureck extensively used staccato, but I heard no choppiness or fragmentation of line - just a coherent whole and a "flow" to kill for. If she isn't the "high priestess" of Bach keyboard playing, nobody is. Now, Philips, as part of its Great Pianists series offers us Tureck's late 1950's account of the Goldbergs recorded in England. In addition, she plays the French Overture, Italian Concerto, and the Four Duets. Does 40 years make a big difference? Not in this case. The older performance is less austere and more poetic and nuanced. The newer recording is more commanding, mature, and provides better sound. But, it's still Tureck and the differences are not profound. So, I find myself in a bit of a quandry. I'm very glad to have both versions, but I think that many listeners would consider having both to be superfluous.

Rosalyn Tureck (harpsichord) Columbia 2-LP / ~ 100:00 Bradley Lehman wrote (July 23, 2001): For some perspective on Rosalyn Tureck's Goldberg Variations on piano, here's what she sounds like in her 1979 recording of them on harpsichord.
I have this on Columbia 35900, a two-LP set. She takes 83 minutes and observes all repeats. The set also includes the Aria and Variations in the Italian Style, BWV 989, another 17 minutes.
    What does it sound like?
I was listening to the Goldbergs and my wife was in the next room. I didn't know she was paying attention at all, and she has no idea what recordings of the Goldbergs we have, and she's never heard of Tureck. She called me over and said, "That sounds like a woman player who is very good but doesn't really play harpsichord." I said she was exactly right, she beamed, and I asked what clues gave away the player. "She has a delicate touch so I was pretty sure it's not a man. And she plays all the notes and chords right together so doesn't sound like a harpsichord player."
Yes. It sounds like what it is: a good pianist playing all the notes (and then some) on harpsichord with a delicate touch, but without really understanding how to let the harpsichord be expressive. The result sounds like a vast intellectual exercise, objective and unemotional. I've had this set for at least a dozen years and this play-through reminded me again why I hardly ever listen to it. 1) It doesn't sound like a harpsichordist, and 2) it's boring. And 3), see below.

    Newhouse News Service
    by Byron Belt
Music of Bach soars on piano
"On two magnificent d'Note Classics compact discs, Sutherland now has recorded what may very well be the most totally satisfying Goldberg Variations available."
"As musically profound as (Rosalyn) Tureck, and with something akin to a spiritual luminosity, Sutherland offers listeners 87 minutes of the most inspired music it is possible to conceive."
For many people, including this enthusiast, love for Johann Sebastian Bach's supreme keyboard composition-the Goldberg Variations, for harpsichord-was kindled by the controversial and endlessly stimulating first Columbia LP version by the late Glenn Gould.
Rosalyn Tureck began her career as a virtuoso of legendary proportions, and one with a special interest in contemporary American music. But a passion for Bach soon consumed her, and many lovers of piano music have no idea that she plays anything else. Purism has its drawbacks. Bach's organ music suffered decades of almost total indifference during which Leopold Stokowski's sumptuous orchestra transcription were all that kept the master's works before the public.
Only the dramatic and musically passionate Wanda Landowska could attract throngs of admirers to her harpsichord recitals of Bach and other early masters. But Romantic pianists from Liszt and Busoni on dared to perform Bach's greatest keyboard music on the modern piano.
