Great Pianists of the 20 th Century series with follow-up volumes devoted to Rosalyn Tureck and Jorge Bolet. Both pianists, incidentally, were born in 1914; Bolet died in 1990, and Tureck remains alive and kicking, as far as I know. Her volume is particularly welcome because it includes recordings that have been hard to find for decades. Although Bolet's volume contains more recent material from his last London/Decca years, it is good to have a de facto "Liszt's Greatest Hits for the Piano" selection as comprehensive as this one. Tureck is often described as the "high priestess of Bach," a statement that might have given harpsichordist Wanda Landowska pause! Although she has played the music of many other composers, Bach was her forte from an early age, and so he has remained. She has done six commercial recordings of the

Excellent issues come from Aldwell, Hewitt, and Gould. Betraying the common notion that Gould plays everything too fast, his F sharp prelude is the slowest of the seventeen versions. The performance has all I could want except for some less than strong accenting at times; his use of staccato is revelatory. Aldwell is almost as slow as Gould with a heart-felt and joyous interpretation. Hewitt is faster and provides sensational syncopation. Suzuki's performance seems to me a perfect one. On the slow side, he delivers wonderful levels of comfort and delicacy mixed with superb accenting and syncopation. Suzuki gives me an inner glow; it must be magic. Aldwell is toward the low end with a rushed performance; he sounds as if he's "toughing it out". Jarrett eschews the rushed approach and zooms though the fugue without looking back; it works very well as he puts a lot of excitement into the piece. Other fine versions include the dark-hewn Hewitt, the highly playful Schiff, the tender and slow Roberts, the comforting Horszowski, the delightful Richter, the angular Leonhardt, the cautious and deliberate Tilney, the urgent Suzuki, and the swift and energetic Fischer. Aside from Aldwell, each of these issues is well appreciated. Glenn Gould is in class of his own. He does everything the other great versions do and also creates a musical drama of highly contrasting emotions. The urgency and sense of resolution keep me glued to the headphones. This is certainly one of Gould's best Bach interpretations.

[Fingering] In order to phrase in several moving lines, the fingering used in Bach's time must be incoporated into the muscular habits of the hand, for contrapuntal music gave rise to a keyboard technique which suited its need. Lacking constant use of the thumb and with less emphasis on successive fingering than in modern technique, overlapping, underlapping and frequent silent change of fingering on the same note are indispensable. ....An admirable equipment for choral, virtuoso, and melodic playing in a single line, this later technique makes no provision for contrapuntal structures, and the addition of earlier keyboard technique is indispensable for adequate performance of Bach's more complex music. ... [Phrasing] ... All musical elements combine to influence its shape, and shape in music is as vital contrapuntally and aurally as it is visually in painting... The long phrase marks indicate breathing periods; do not confuse them with legato playing. ..... The long phrase forms the unity of design to which the inner phrases belong, but the successful performance of a long phrase is itself dependent upon the delineation of its parts...

Treatises since the 18 th century have provided clearer ideas and instructions for music interpretation. However, there are always no definite answers of articulation and phrasing for a specific style of a composer. F. Couperin's L'art de toucher le clavecin may have introduced some of his contemporaries' performing habits, but it also presented more of his own techniques. Furthermore, it is hard to ascertain if J. S. Bach favored using a harpsichord or a clavichord in playing some of his keyboard works, so Rosalyn Tureck's interpretation of Bach's music with the harpsichord would be one possibility. How about C. P. E. Bach's ? It revealed some of J. S. Bach's revolutionary ideas of performance practice, but the theory can sometimes be harmonized with the music of later composers in the 19 th century too.

QUOTE by Rosalyn Tureck and Margaret Chase Smith. Etta Shiber and Kitty Beaurepos At the time of the German invasion of France, Etta Shiber, American author of Paris Underground (1943), then in her 60's, lived in Paris with her good friend Kitty Beaurepos. They had met in a dress shop on a trip Shiber had made to Paris in 1925.
Yearly, Shiber visited Beaurepos in Paris and when Shiber's husband of 35 years died in 1936, she moved to Paris to live quietly with KB. In 1940, they resisted fleeing Paris until there was no hope and then they joined the jam of refugees fleeing south.
Her book graphically describes the confusion and fear felt by the refugees on the crowded roads, some on foot carrying what possessions they could, others in dog- or horse-drawn vehicles, and some like Shiber-Beaurepos in automobiles - all subject to being machine-gunned and bombed from German planes - and there was no food left anywhere.
The two old women stopped at an inn to search for food and found, instead, a British aviator who failed to get evacuated at Dunkirk. They hide him in the trunk of their car and when the Germans caught their refugee column and turned them back to Paris, the aviator - undiscovered - went with them. They hid him in their apartment, finally making contact with the underground to get him out.

Widely considered to be the summit of keyboard music, it is an encyclopaedia of forms and styles, and, especially, of contrapuntal composition. Rosalyn Tureck, once called the High Priestess of Bach, has certainly marked the twentieth century with her many recordings of Bach’s keyboard music on piano. This recording, made for the BBC in 1975 and 1976, is a welcome addition to her discography. Rosalyn Tureck’s landmark 1953 recording of the Well-Tempered Clavier remains one of the milestones in the discography of Bach recordings, but this set, recorded more than twenty years later, shows the pianist at the summit of her form. Benefiting from an additional two decades of experience with this music, she gives it insights of which few pianists would be capable.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. A pianist is a person who plays the piano A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Sergei Rachmaninov Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin , and Robert Schumann were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including

Joseph Schillinger - August 31, 1895 - March 23, 1943. "...music plus electricity equals the sound of the twentieth century." - Joseph Schillinger. Russian-born Joseph Schillinger is responsible for some major contributions to the history and development of the theremin as well as a major work of theremin literature. Formerly a musicology professor in Petrograd, he moved to New York in the late 1920s where he began working with Leon Theremin, helping with the writing of theremin manuals and the development of several new models of the instrument. Schillinger's FIRST AIRPHONIC SUITE for theremin and orchestra was premiered in Cleveland November 28, 1929 with Leon Theremin as soloist. He also collaborated with Theremin in producing several landmark electronic concerts. One of these at Carnegie Hall featured fourteen theremins. As a composition teacher Schillinger was greatly respected and taught a number of well-known musiciansBenny Goodman, Glenn Miller, a host of successful film composers and some symphonic composers such as Gershwin among others. To mark the occasion, this special edition of the Fishko Files, "20 years After Glenn Gould," examines Bach as it is played on the modern piano, especially as it has or has not been influenced by Gould's style. Distinguished pianists Murray Perahia, Vladimir Feltsman, Angela Hewitt, Edward Aldwell, Maria Tipo and Sergei Schepkin are among the participants. The program traces the rise and fall and rise of Bach on the piano, from the years of Wanda Landowska and Rosalyn Tureck, through the Gould years to the present. Ample excerpts of performances by the pianists, as well as by Gould himself, will illustrate the commentary. Glenn Gould's arresting version of the Bach Goldberg Variations, first released in the mid-1950's, brought worldwide attention to both the pianist and the composition. More recordings and performances of Bach followed, in a style so distinctive as to have all but eclipsed other Bach players of his generation. Gould famously chose the recording studio over the concert stage early in his career, declaring, "the concert is dead." Known for his peculiar work habits (most notably his obsession with temperature in the studios) and a contrarian's approach to music in general (he dismissed many of Beethoven's greatest works while becoming fascinated by Petula Clark) Gould was one of the rare classical musicians to cross over into popular consciousness. But before the world knew about the oddities of his behavior, they knew about his Bach playing. It is his performance of the music of Bach and its effect that will be examined in 20 Years after Glenn Gould.

Edgar Roberts, Pianist and Pre-College Faculty Member, Dies
Edgar M. Roberts, a concert pianist and faculty member of The Juilliard School for 56 years, died on July 25 in Kingston, N.Y. at the age of 80, after a long struggle with cancer. Edgar Roberts Born in Sulfur Springs, Okla., Mr. Roberts was raised in Texas. He got an early start in his piano career at age 3, when he would sidle up to his Aunt Willette (the accompanist at the silent movies hosted in his father's theaters in Memphis, Tex.) and play "by ear" while she worked the pedals. He began formal study at 7 and entered the Fort Worth Conservatory in 1933. At 15 he hosted his own solo piano program on the Texas State Network and on radio station WFAA-WBAP in Dallas and Fort Worth. Two years later, he won the prestigious Dealey Award, sponsored by the Dallas Morning News, which brought performances with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Dubbed "the flaxen-haired virtuoso," he was even called to step in for another pianist on 12-hours' notice for a performance of The Firebird , under the baton of Stravinsky himself.
