Robin Sutherland
Sutherland's Deeply Personal "Goldberg Variations"
It would be hard to find a single piece of music that has absorbed as many musicians' lives as Bach's "Goldberg" Variations. There's the case of Glenn Gould, recording the set in 1955 and then again in 1981. And Rosalyn Tureck, initiated into the variations as a teenager, calling them "an infinite work of art" which she continues to perform on harpsichord and piano at 85. After an Andras Schiff performance of them, he debated the "Goldbergs" with Gould until six in the morning. I knew a pianist who was fired from playing at a bar after he insisted on playing nothing but back-to-back "Goldbergs." Robin Sutherland, best known as the San Francisco Symphony's pianist, first performed the "Goldberg" Variations at the age of sixteen. He last played the complete set in San Francisco in 1983, so it was no surprise that his Sunday afternoon performance attracted a full house. The obstacle of Bay Bridge traffic caused me to miss the first several variations, which was especially irritating because Sutherland shaped the set so beautifully: I didn't just miss the beginning of a sequence, but the cornerstone of a carefully constructed edifice. Sutherland struck a perfect balance between revealing a preconceived whole and maintaining spontaneity. He brought Bach's interplay of virtuosity and introspection into focus.

Great Book of Interviews Sunday, February 4, 2001 These titles are available through Dover Publications which is a significant source of important material for musical and cultural enrichment. This latest book is no exception. It's full of great quotable material. Great Contemporary Pianists Speak For Themselves Elyse Mach This book would ordinarily follow a reading of Great Pianists on Piano Playing by James Francis Cooke, also available from Dover, which I reviewed here last year. For one thing this is a far more contemporary book than Cooke's and the pianists interviewed are a mix of some of the older greats with some of the newer talents. Conspicuously missing but far from forgotten is Arthur Rubinstein. He is remembered largely through his protege, Janina Fialkowska. The portraits of some of the pianists one will actually meet inside are from top left to bottom right, Vladimir Horowitz, Claudio Arrau, Andre Watts, Alicia de Larrocha, Glenn Gould, Emil Gilells, Rosalyn Tureck and Jorge Bolet. Each has quite different stories to tell of how they came to be concert pianists. In this book, one will hear one of the few instances where a pianist goes into some depth concerning pianos themselves; It is true that you transport your own piano for the concerts you play?

98. Handbook Of Texas Online: SAMAROFF, OLGA

SAMAROFF, OLGA Evening Post from 1926 to 1928. For the next two decades (1928-48) she reigned as a powerful, demanding teacher. For her students she was able to obtain scholarships and patrons, arrange important social contacts with managers and conductors, and help secure employment during the depression years. She initiated and organized two programs-the Schubert Memorial Foundation (1928) and the Laymen's Music Courses (1932)-meant to provide professional performance opportunities for music students and educate audiences in music study. She published The Layman's Music Course (1935) and An American Musician's Story (1939). Her experiences in Russia and with Stokowski made her emphasize contemporary music and the importance of media attention at premieres. Her most famous performing students-William Kapell, Eugene List, Raymond Lewenthal, Joseph Battista, Rosalyn Tureck, Alexis Weissenberg-usually made their careers specializing in contemporary or specific period literature. Samaroff's pedagogical method stressed artistic independence, the concept that each student was to work out his individual approach on a composition. She decried the artist-coach technique in which the teacher talked through or showed a student each part of a work. Consequently, her students' performances were quite varied. In addition to her teaching, Samaroff was involved in numerous public activities related to music. During the Great Depression qv she helped organize the Musicians' Emergency Aid (later Musicians' Emergency Fund), and in 1935 she became one of twenty-five musicians chosen to help the Federal Music Project of the Work Projects Administration
