The Colombian-born pianist, Blanca Uribe, is both an experienced concert artist and a teacher: she has been a professor at Vassar College for over 30 years. On the evidence of this CD she is a fine and thoughtful pianist. According to the liner notes, she has a particular affinity with the works of Beethoven and on this disc she offers performances of two of his most challenging late sonatas. The helpful liner notes point out the contrasts between the two sonatas with the thematic material of Op.110 described as "vocal". This seems to suit Uribe's style well. She brings grace and poise to the first movement. Perhaps she does not have quite the breadth of, say Solomon but her approach is cooler (and that is not meant pejoratively). In her hands the third movement Adagio is calmly poetic and the fugal finale has admirable clarity. In the 'Hammerklavier' the drama of the first movement is well projected although the performance does not have quite the drive of Brendel's 1995 recording. In his classic 1952 account Solomon draws out the Adagio to an astonishing (and mesmerising) 22'20. Uribe, wisely, does not attempt such an approach. Her beautifully poised performance lasts a "mere" 16'44 and while not perhaps as searching as Brendel here she is controlled and fully convincing. The short, dramatic Largo is well handled, with a good sense of suspense (could this section not have been separately tracked?) The tumultuous fugal finale rounds off the performance very satisfyingly.

Listen to Movement I of Viola Sonata from Albany Troy 074 with Walter Trampler, viola, and Blanca Uribe, pianist.
I have always been drawn to disadvantaged instruments, and there is none more put-upon than the viola. Though not comic in soundas its fellow stepchild the bassoon can bethe viola is the subject of endless dim jokes presumably because of its rumored acoustical flaws, its lack of repertoire, and the invidious accusation that it was invented to provide work for failed violinists (whose shortcomings could go unheard owing to the acoustical flaws and lack of repertoire.) Far greater composers than I have attempted redress: Mozart, Berlioz, Hindemithto name but three. Apart from favoring the viola in all three of my string quartets, my first overt contribution to its rescue was MUSIC FOR SOLO VIOLA, written for Stephanie Fricker in 1988. The next year, Rudolf Firkusnya friend for many yearssuggested I write a short piece with piano for a concert he was planning with Walter Trampler, another friend of long standing. Given the stature of these players, the temptation to do a more challenging piece was hard to resist. SONATA FOR VIOLA AND PIANO was the result. After the piece was written, circumstances prevented the envisioned concert from taking place. The premiere was thus postponed until November 14, 1991, when it was given at Greenwich House Music School in Manhattan by Mr. Trampler and Blanca Uribe, who have since recorded it for Albany Records (TROY 074).

Our live chat interview on Tuesday October 29th at 10 PM (EST) was with pianist Misha Dichter. nd I have been quite lucky! I was a student at Juilliard and I saw a poster for the third annual Shostakovich Competition in Moscow...and at the brash young age of 20, thinking I had nothing to lose, I entered and that prize from one day to the next turned me into a professional. I emphasize the work *luck*!! OboeDB64: How do you choose who you wish to collaborate with regarding chamber music and the like? DichterM: Good Question Oboe! In theory, I am available to play in all countries at all times. The managers in each country have options each year for concerts in their respective countries, and within that framework, I am invited to be a soloist with those orchestras each season. Chamber music is a much more rarified experience and I have chosen to collaborate with those musicians who I have grown to know and respect over the years. Because making chamber music together inplies spending a great deal time together. LVB: How old were you when you first started learning Brahms' Piano Concertos?
