"[Vlaeva] displays a command of the Lisztian manner gifted to just the few."
Ates ORGA, International Piano Quarterly
" Vlaeva's Dante Sonata ranks among the top recordings of this challenging work...Her Gnomenreigen and Hungarian Rhapsody ["Pesther Karneval"] are as fine as on any recording."
David Mulbury, American Record Guide "Poetry, beauty of sound and a singing line are her chief concerns...The Rigoletto paraphrase...illustrates her lyrical poise and musical refinement, as well as a gorgeous tonal palette...One of the features that marks out Vlaeva as a natural poet of the piano is her exquisite sense of timing, her ability to shape a phrase with just the right degree of temporal inflexion..."

A Liszt Recital
"From her earliest years as a concert pianist, Nadejda Vlaeva has had a special affinity with the music of Franz Liszt. By far the greater portion of her repertory is presently devoted to the Hungarian master. She was fifteen years old when she arrived at a major turning point in her career by winning the Gold Medal of the International Liszt Competition in Lucca, Italy.... Vlaeva's playing is marked by a rich sound, a singing line, and an intuitive grasp of Liszt's musical structures which in the case of his longer compositions, can be complicated. That she has a shining technique, able to cope with any Lisztian emergency, goes without saying." Alan Walker
Author of the three volume, prize-winning biography of Franz Liszt Ms. Vlaeva has performed in concerts internationally, giving solo recitals in Bulgaria, Russia, Slovakia, Hungary, The Netherlands, England, Canada, and the United States. She has also appeared as soloist with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Capella Istropolitana in Slovakia and various orchestras in Bulgaria and Holland. Her playing has been acclaimed wherever she has appeared.

LISZT Piano Pieces

>Un Sospiro; Liebeslied; Gnomenreigen; Hungarian Rhapsody 9
>This gifted young Bulgarian pianist has achieved distinguished performances in this very attractive program that should draw the attention of all Liszt devotees. The opening piece, which Liszt composed for his eldest daughter, Blandine, is given a remarkably evocative reading, more effective than any I have previously heard. Vlaeva's Dante Sonata ranks among the top recordings of this challenging work, which Affred Brendel calls Liszt's most Berliozian piano piece. I still favor Mocsari's performance (Hungaroton) for its excitement, but Vlaeva shrouds it with more atmosphere.

Alan Walker
The International Liszt Piano Competition September 9-24, 1996
Some Personal Reflections Liszt's music, in fact, is not performer proof. It can bring out the worst in pianists. How to cope with its myriad technical challenges? At this level, everything should be easy - or it is impossible. What is required for Liszt is a player of transcendental ability (the term "transcendental" was Liszt's own), a pianist who can make the music sound easy, can place some distance between himself and the keyboard, and can play with aristocratic detachment - not unlike a general who controls the conflict miles from headquarters. Only when that happens does the piano disappear and music appear. Alas for Liszt, his music attracts pianists who are only just good enough to play it. They leave behind them a battlefield in which the piano and the pianist have exhausted themselves in combat. The sins of the player are visited on this composer in a specially cruel way. thus inviting an instant comparison. Again, Liszt's statue came to life, as if in sardonic amusement: "I too used to do that sort of thing when I was twenty-two, but the time soon came when it was no longer necessary - and so it will with you." As a matter of fact, it came within half-an-hour, when Vlaeva produced a rivetting account of the "Pesther Carneval" Rhapsody. If there are better performances than this one, I have never heard them. It was conceived in heaven. Vlaeva, too, went through to the finals and won third place.

e-mail: hambivan@axelero.hu The Society's history and structure. The society takes its name from the great Hungarian composer and pianist, Franz Liszt (1811-86). Attempts were made to launch such a society even during the master's life time, but it was finally established in 1893. The Society suffered a number of interruptions, before in 1973, it was reborn. After the change of system in Hungary, the Society became an independent Hungarian cultural civic association. It is directed by a presidential board of 12 members. The president is István Lantos, the distinguished pianist, organist and teacher. The secretary-general is the musicologist, Dr Klára Hamburger. The Society is a member of the Hungarian Music Council. Besides its Budapest seat, other branches of the society operate in Sopron, Pécs, Szekszard and Kalocsa. The Society has nearly 600 members. The Society's aims: to make familiar Liszt's life and musical oeuvre and to apply and propagate his noble ideals.

Naughty Marietta, operetta
"Considering the long-established popularity of Herbert's operetta, it is rather surprising that this is its first complete recording. The work is a veritable cornucopia of melody... Suzanne Woods is a total delight in the title role, dispatching the coloratura intricacies with ease and adjusting with ease to the spoken dialog... The diction of all is remarkably clear and intelligible, but Albany has thoughtfully supplied a complete English libretto, including the dialog..." -ARG DDD 2 CD Set ALB-432 $34.60

The Complete Keyboard Works of Johann Sebastian Bach
LAB 7000 This monumental edition, comprising of 15 volumes/19 CDs, features the celebrated Brazilian pianist who has been called "the most exciting player of Bach on the modern piano since Glenn Gould" by the Boston Globe. The Washington Post called him "a marvel of rhythmic electricity, a font of musicianship and a man born to do great things with the piano," while Harold Schonberg of The New York Times remarked that "his technique sends fireworks in all directions. With this collection, Martins joins in the forefront of highly individualistic Bach interpreters - including Glenn Gould, Wanda Landowska and Pablo Casals."
"...deeply communicative, musically sensitive and always interesting."
"His dynamic prowess is frequently breathtaking" –
