The Paraphrases is a collaborative work that features 24 variations and a finale by Cui, Liadov and Rimsky-Korsakov, followed by a brief transition by Liszt and 15 short pieces by Borodin and the three mentioned above. The work is for two pianos, the second of which plays the same motive over and over throughout, while the first plays more substantive music. In the end, the work ends up as a failed attempt to create the sublime from the simple, because it falls victim to monotony long before its half-hour-plus duration is up. Too bad, because many individual pieces and variations are cleverly conceived and written. The Shostakovich Aphorisms fare better, but not much. More and more I'm becoming convinced that Shostakovich's piano music generally falls far below the level of his chamber music and concertos for string instruments. These short pieces sound like improvisations, experiments in a style not dissimilar to Shostakovich's fantastic opera, The Nose, but without that work's biting satire and artistic sense of purpose. The Op. 87 Prelude and Fugue in D Flat is worth attention, but, alas, is but one choice nugget from what is perhaps the composer's most substantive work for piano. Scriabin, while not necessarily a mainstream figure to many, is still a composer of importance in my view, and becomes the lone reason for the potential buyer to acquire this disc, especially because of the ethereal and agitated reading of the Fifth Sonata. Still, three of the preludes here appear on the other disc.

Volkov misses nothing here in his brilliant enactment of the busy sonic shenanigans and darkly atmospheric writing. He captures the full measure of the mischief and mystery, the color and the surrealism..." (Cosmik Debris, January 1999)

Mr. Volkov was born in Rostov-on-Don in the south of Russia. He studied in the Russian music schools, graduating with highest honors. He began studying with Maestro Victor Merzhanov at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 1977. A distinguished student at the Conservatory, he completed his postgraduate degree (doctor of musical arts) in 1987, again receiving an honors diploma. The Rachmaninoff Second had for decades been the second most popular piano concerto in the world's concert halls, the Tchaikovsky First, of course, being preeminent. In the last ten or fifteen years, this C Minor concerto's older sibling, the virtuosic and once-neglected Third, has at least caught up, maybe even surpassed it. The Second is a better-crafted, if less dramatic, work. It may well not feature the blood-and-thunder cadenzas or the extroverted grandiosity found in the Third, but neither does it suffer from the structural and textual problems that plague the later piece. And, like most great concertos, it can inspire several valid interpretive approaches. But, of course, this kind of perfection can have its limitations. There will be many listeners who won't find this Second to their liking, for, while Volkov is always the sensitive artist, he eschews thunder and swagger, traits that can enliven what is, to many, a war horse work that needs some invigoration, some risk-taking, some swashbuckling playing. Personally, I can live quite satisfied with Volkov's recording, though I'd want to keep the Janis/Mercury at hand and my favorite Rachmaninoff Second, the Rubinstein/RCA. Andrei Tchistiakov and his Moscow players abet Volkov splendidly here. In sum, this is one of the finest Rachmaninoff Seconds I've ever heard.
