Koncert gruppy Garbage. 3 fevralya, Sankt-Peterburg, DS "Yubileinyi"
V dvuh slovah mozhno bylo by predstavit' vystuplenie Garbage v Pitere tak: yarkoe, oslepitel'noe shou. Podrobnei eto vyglyadit sleduyushim obrazom. Esli vy ne lyubili etu gruppu ran'she, to ne polyubit' ee na koncerte udalos' by s trudom. Ne bez nekotoryh skidok, razumeetsya. Nichego durnogo pro nih govorit' ne hotelos' by, no s semplerom, konechno, MTV-kumiry perebrali. Navyazchivyi elektronnyi strekot prodel ves' koncert, kak sharnirom, na kotorom boltalis' i namakiyazhennaya Shirli Menson, i prodvinutaya publika, i, bez preuvelicheniya, upoitel'nyi svet. Razumeetsya, koncerty v sportivnyh sooruzheniyah davno pora zapretit' i prekratit', po prichine neadekvatnogo akusticheskogo resheniya onyh, no, kak govoritsya, chto imeem... Sama zamorskaya krasotka neobychaino poradovala dinamichnymi scenicheskimi dvizheniyami i vpolne pristoinymi vokal'nymi sposobnostyami.

    ALEXEI KOZLOV

Alexei Kozlov's ensemble The Arsenal laid the foundations of Russian jazz rock. The group was formed in 1973 and existed in the underground till 1976, when the ban of rock music and jazz rock was lifted and the band began to tour. In the following years they became widely known in the Soviet Union and abroad. The group gave its farewell concert in spring 1998. Boheme Music catalogue contains 4 CDs of The Arsenal. Besides, the recording of Alexei Kozlov playing with the Shostakovich Quartet is currently being scheduled for release. ANATOLE GERASIMOV
Sax and flute player, composer and arranger, Anatole Gerasimov worked with Moscow's best jazz bands. In 1973 he emigrated to the U.S. where he first played for Duke Ellington's orchestra. After the orchestra had broken up, he played with the leading New York jazzmen and composed for the theatre and the cinema (for example, he wrote a song for 1983's blockbuster "Liquid Sky"). In the early 1990s he moved to Paris and in 1997 returned to Russia. He now successfully works in Moscow with his own band of young musicians. Boheme Music catalogue contains his latest recording made in Moscow. SLAVA GORSKY
Keyboard player Slava Gorsky was one of the creators of Russian jazz rock. For many years he worked with Alexei Kozlov in The Arsenal. In 1984 he formed The Quadro group which has become one of the most popular instrumental groups in Russia. In 1990s The Quadro has become harder and more perspicuous and its compositions more laconic. The style of Gorsky himself, nevertheless, remains highly individual and is easy to recognize. Boheme Music catalogue contains two of his albums with Quadro - a late 80s album reissue and a new one.

The non-conformist art, called "The Other Art", or avant-garde, underground etc., was considered "unofficial" by both the public and the authorities. (In the beginning, the line between the official and unofficial manifestations of a particular painter were unclear. ) At the height of the "Thaw", the artform showed great spontaneity and almost naivety as painters tried to communicate both the public and the government.
At the time, it was unimaginable that art, which merely because it did not fit into the mould of Socialist Realism (founded on the traditions of 19th century Russian Academicism), could be perceived to be political opposition to the government. In fact, events such as the Picasso and Leger exhibitions at the Pushkin Museum and the early 20th century Russian avant-garde exhibition at the Maiakovski, seemed to have confirmed that a certain artistic freedom would be tolerated.
However, on December 1st, 1962 at the Cavaliers Room, Nikita Kruschev inaugurated an exhibition to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Painter's Union of Moscow. The exhibition included successful painters from the first half of the 20th century such as Sterenberg, Falk, Drevine, Petrov-Vodkine, Kousnestov, and for the first time, the works of certain young independent artists. The latter paintings, by Sobolev, Yankilevski, Joutovski, Neisvestny and a large section of work by painters from Belioutine's studio, were conspicuously located on the first floor. These independents' works greatly contrasted the traditional artist works.
