ACCK NEWS! Vol. 5, No. 1 September 2000 Welcome to the Start of the New Academic Year!! Over thirty years ago, six private church related liberal arts institutions set out on a new path when they decided to share resources and explore opportunities of mutual benefit for their respective students, staff and faculty members. This commitment continues today. ACCK enters the 2000-2001 academic year with a number of new initiatives. An academic program in Athletic Training is now available for students. We are also working to see if an ACCK insurance group will provide more stability in rates. In addition, updated hardware and software in the Computer Center permits greater efficiencies in processing and printing. All-in-all, it is an exciting period in ACCK's history! Please let us know if there are additional ways for us to enhance service to you and your students. The ACCK pocket calendars have been distributed to the campus. Send e-mail to Chantel Warren at achantew@acck.edu if you still need a calendar. We have also collected information on new employees and are nearly finished with the 2000-2001 Directory of faculty and staff on the six campuses. The new Directory will be available on the ACCK web site at http://www.acck.edu on the "New and Information" page. A few paper copies will also be sent to the campuses in the next few days.

Countdown to Oscars Film fans can nibble on these tidbits in anticipation of the big show Wednesday, March 19, 2003 By Barbara Vancheri, Post-Gazette Staff Writer Somewhere, Gene Kelly must be smiling. swept up in social whirl as Oscar approaches
Emanuel Levy's book "All About Oscar" quotes the Pittsburgh native on a subject near to his heart: "There is a strange sort of reasoning in Hollywood that musicals are less worthy of Academy consideration than drama. It's a form of snobbism, the same sort that perpetuates the idea that drama is more deserving of awards than comedy," said Kelly, nominated for his acting only once and given an honorary award in 1951. "Chicago" has no shortage of Hollywood respect and, even better, momentum. If it takes home the Academy Award for Best Picture, it will join an elite group of eight Oscar-winning musicals, from 1929's "The Broadway Melody" to 1968's "Oliver!" That British picture converted 11 of its nods into wins for picture, director Carol Reed, musical score, sound and art direction.

by Michael Walters The Yeomen of the Guard when Richard Temple left the company. All this was of course partly dictated by what audiences had come to expect, but also, I believe, to a great extent by the talents of the members of the company. It is noteworthy that Trial by Jury , written before the permanent company was established, contains few of the elements mentioned above. It has a tenor and soprano of course, but so do virtually all operas, and the roles of the Judge and Usher do not equate exactly (in my view) with any of the baritone roles found in later operas. It is also worth noting that none of the original cast of Trial by Jury created roles in any subsequent opera, though it is probable that Frederic Sullivan (the Judge) would have done so had he lived. W.S. Gilbert Stage Director , examined the cast of The Sorcerer in some detail, and suggested that Giulia Warwick, who created Constance, appeared no more at the Savoy because Gilbert probably found her difficult to handle. This is not so. Her reasons for leaving, as for joining, were financial.

'Whad'Ya Know' sauces its questions with hilarity
by Teresa Gubbins Radio fared quite well in person Saturday morning when Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know? a comedy-interview-quiz show that airs on public radio stations, including KERA-FM (90.1) made a rare appearance in Dallas, broadcasting live from the Dallas Convention Center. Whad'Ya Know In addition to Mr. Feldman, regulars included announcer Jim Packard and a jazzy three-piece combo: pianist John Thulin, bassist Jeff Eckels and drummer Clyde Stubblefield, all of whom received a good-natured barb or two from Mr. Feldman. The droll Mr. Packard, for example, got called to task for wearing Western garb. "Jim is pandering to you," Mr. Feldman said to the audience. "Notice he wore the boots and the little tie. He never wears that." Mr. Feldman had extraordinary charm and wit, with the ability to transform a run-of-the-mill conversation or situation into something profoundly entertaining. With his snappy delivery, even a set of instructions to the audience on how and when to applaud was hilarious. "It's a radio show," he said. "The most important thing is that you make appropriate noise. W e encourage you to applaud loudly this is radio, not life."
