Let The Jubilee Begin!
LONDON, June 1, 2002

“It's a beautiful atmosphere, like in a fairy tale”
Soprano Kiri te Kanawa Alagna, who performed at the concert, to the BBC
(CBS) Queen Elizabeth II opened Buckingham Palace to 12,000 guests for an outdoor evening of classical music Saturday, kicking off a four-day Jubilee celebration of her 50 years on the throne.
The concert marked the start of a string of royal revelry with pomp, fireworks, street parties and a pop concert on tap.
CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips calls the festivities evidence of a "new-found re-connection between the Queen and her people." And Phillips notes that that means everyone, with the palace's public relations machine making special efforts lately to appeal to all generations of Brits. The Golden Jubilee holiday happens to coincide with England's first soccer match at the World Cup in Japan — an event which will overshadow the royal family briefly on Sunday morning in the football-mad nation. “Long to reign over us” read the Daily Mail front page dominated by a photograph of the queen. “Send him victorious,” was the back page headline beneath a picture of England football captain David Beckham.

Keyboard Studies
Piano recent successes, December 2002 We are pleased to announce that Ian Fountain and Arnaldo Cohen were recently appointed to the the teaching staff of the Piano Department. Alexander Satz has continued his inspiring work as Broadwood Visiting Professor. He makes three week-long visits to the Academy, each time giving 2 masterclasses and also about 20 hours of individual lessons. Professor Satz himself selects from audition the students with whom he feels it most productive to work and sees them once or twice on each visit. Maria Curcio has continued her valued masterclasses, which have a very loyal following. Our third "Visiting Professor" is Stephen Hough, who also gives both individual lessons and open classes on his visits to the Academy. Over the past few years, there has been a consistent number of successes for Academy pianists in International Competitions (both as soloists and in ensemble playing), often with consequent concert engagements and career opportunities. While this is in no way regarded as the prime "target" of our work, it is gratifying when students are seen as succeeding at this level. Over the past five or so years these have included:
Freddy Kempf : Finalist and 3rd Prize, Moscow

NEWS FLASH!
MYKIETYN'S PREMIERE IN WARSAW
Pawe³ Mykietyn's chamber opera, Ignorant i szaleniec [An ignoramus and a madman], based on a play by Thomas Bernhard received its premiere at the Teatr Wielki, Grand Theater - National Opera in Warsaw Poland (May 4-5, 2001). The opera, commissioned by the Theater from the young composer (b. 1971) was prepared by the conductor Wojciech Michniewski and the composer himself; the stage direction was realized by Krzysztof Warlikowski - a theater director with whom Mykietyn previously worked on many projects. The subject of the opera is grisly and this is one reason for its reception that seems to split the audiences in half, between those who love and hate the work. The main character, The Queen of the Night, is lifted from Mozart's Magic Flute . The Queen, performed by Olga Pasiecznik, even sings Mozart's arias, cited along with musical commentaries by Mykietyn. This character is a operatic diva, identified with Mozart's heroine; the diva's father is an alcoholic - a spiritual drunk (sung by barytone Jerzy Artysz), the third character of the opera is a doctor who through its course presents a detailed description of an autopsy (a British countertenor Jonathan Peter Kenny, who especially for this role studied Polish).

Maurice Ravel Cantus Basel Homepage

American Sojourn
All this week, Donald Macleod journeys to countries that played a part in the life and music of Frederick Delius, beginning today with America. The composer spent two years there as a young man, where, for the most part, he ostensibly oversaw an orange plantation in Florida. However, he was more preoccupied with the sights and sounds around him and composing for the first time. This programme features music that Delius wrote during this period, as well as music he composed later in which he drew on the memories of his American sojourn. PARTY AT THE PALACE
Aretha Franklin Performing before Queen Elizabeth II as part of her Golden Jubilee is considered such as honor that the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, will confront her fear of flying and get on a plane for the first time in 19 years.
Franklin hasn't flown since she was on a two engine prop plane in 1983. That flight so terrified her that she vowed never to fly again - and hasn't - until she received the invitation from the Queen.
To prepare for the event the airline is having Franklin attend fear of flying classes, including spending time in a flight simulator machine.
The 60-year-old Franklin, the first female performer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has won 15 Grammy Awards, the Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She will perform for Queen Elizabeth II in the gardens of Buckingham Palace on June 3, as part of the Queen's Concerts program.
Afterward Queen Elizabeth will host a reception for the artists.
