The Joy of Music Guest Artist Dr. William Westney at Mt. A
Are you a perfectionist? Are you a music lover? Are you an aspiring teacher, musician, actor, radio broadcaster, public speaker...? Are you ready for a surprise?
From February 10-12, Mount Allison University's Department of Music will welcome the noted and idiosyncratic pianist, teacher, lecturer and clinician Dr. William Westney as guest artist. Westney's innovative perspective on the art of performance should be of interest to a wide cross section of Mt. A students and faculty.
Westney will perform a solo recital at 8:00 pm on Thursday night in Brunton Auditorium, present a lecture entitled "The Perils of Perfectionism" at 8:00 pm the following night, and conduct an Un-Master Class session with students in Mt. A's Music programme on Saturday from 9:30-12:30 am in the Band Room. The public is cordially invited to these events, and there is no admission charge.
Students and faculty of the Music Department are excited about Westney's visit. Music students Tracy Anderson, Judith Millar, Jennifer Cosman, and Kim Denis, as well as the Saxville Quartet, will be some of the musical dramatic guinea pigs. Millennial deep listener and piano professor Janet Hammock strongly encourages people from disciplines other than music to attend the event.
Westney, the originator of the popular and intriguing Un-Master Class workshop, which has been held at large conferences such as Chamber Music America and the National Flute Association, and also such prominent schools such as Julliard, Peabody Conservatory, the Aspen School of Music, the Cleveland Institute, and conservatories in Europe and Asia, works with an unusual approach to teaching. In a recent feature article, the New York Times described the unique Un-Master Class as "fascinating".

All performances will be held at the Lubbock Civic Center Theatre * 8:1 P.M.
    The Glory and the Grandeur
For the first orchestral spectacular of The Golden Season, Maestro Schram has chosen a program of European and American MasterWorks which invoke in every way the exceptional artistry of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. The performance includes the string imagery of Wager's Overture to Die Meistersinger...Mozart's ebullient Symphony No. 29... the exciting, familiar pulse of Bernstein's brilliant Symphonic Dances from "West Side Story"... and the virtuosic dynamism of Peck's The Glory and the Grandeur. The dramatic interpretation of this gifted American composer by the LSO percussion section can only be described as one for the memory books!
    Romantic Masterpieces
Guest Artist: Livia Sohn, Violin Audiences will be thrilled by the LSO's intensely beautiful orchestral interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony, and by the sheer romance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor as performed by violin sensation, Vivia Sohn. Only 18 now, Ms. Sohn first performed this work at 12, the age at which she won the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition. She has appeared with the Boston Pops at Chicago's Ravinia Festival, and with symphony orchestras throughout the U.S. Internationally she has performed in Europe, Korea, and the Middle East. Ms. Sohn currently studies in New York, where she also coaches chamber music at The Juilliard School.

    18. Piano Pedagogy
We all recall breakthrough moment in our training as pianist. student at Texas TechUniversity where I was studying with artistin-residence william westney.
    http://www.usao.edu/sweber/Piano Pedagogy Pages.htm
This page contains musings on a variety of subjects related to piano performance and pedagogy. Memory: Beyond Remembering The subject of memorization for performance has become a hot issue among pianists and teachers over the last few years, with parties on either side making compelling arguments for or against memorization in live performance. The issue continues to cause a stir among pianists and teachers as it is often a featured topic at workshops, conventions and in periodicals. This article will not deal with the pros and cons of memorization in performance. The purpose of this article is not to choose sides in the debate. The issue of concern here is "what do psychologists know about memory and how can we apply that information to our discipline?" Most studies on memory generally agree that memory has three stages or aspects; acquisition, storage and retrieval. Acquisition is the actual process of learning the information to be recalled later. Storage, the second stage, is the system of organization chosen to file the information for recall. The final stage, retrieval, if often thought of as the "remembering" part of memory. It is important to acknowledge that memorization is a process. It is something that is done consciously and with a specific intention. Certainly, exposure to music being studied allows for much information to be stored and recalled, and repetition is one of the key principles for memory. But security in recall hinges on the effectiveness in the acquisition and storage stages. Students often believe that memory lapses are simply caused by their inability to remember the material, when in actuality memory lapses are likely due to ineffectiveness in the acquisition and storage of material.
