Those questions are at the heart of "Past Dependencies," a two-day conference that will look at historical constraints and future inventions from the perspectives of social science, law and the humanities. Sponsored by the Presidential Lectures and Symposia in the Humanities and Arts, the Nov. 5-6 discussions will involve Stanford faculty members and external scholars from a wide range of disciplines. The interdisciplinary emphasis will be highlighted by a recital performed by pianist Charles Rosen at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, in Dinkelspiel Auditorium. Rosen will play works by Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. The recital is to serve as a musical illustration of the remarks Rosen will offer the following morning as a member of the panel discussion on "Emergence: Natural History/Human History." Three faces of fine arts on campus today by Kim Anderson Kendra Bayer, who received her Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture last May, came to UM almost by accident. Visiting a museum in hometown Indianapolis with her parents, Bayer discovered a piece by Missoula artist Nancy Erickson. Bayer pursued the lead and found herself at UM's sculpture program. "This has just been an incredible place for me to work," she says. "The program is wonderful, especially if you're self-motivated. I like the fact that it's small, and if you choose to get a lot of attention, you can." During Bayer's years in Missoula, her figurative bronze and aluminum pieces grew bigger and started to tell a story largely influenced by her art therapy work with Alzheimer's patients. Many of the pieces feature perambulators, baby bottles, dressmakers' forms of the female torsostrong images of motherhood and childhood. "My thesis show was titled 'Know Who You Are,' which came directly from my work with Alzheimer's patients," Bayer says. "Often the things that remained clearest for them were their childhood and their early parenthood. Holding a doll would trigger a powerful connection. That led me to look more closely at who we really are." When Jee Kiat Wong transferred to UM in 1992 from Malaysia, he was an undergraduate majoring in radio and television. Now he's pursuing a master's degree in music.

But the audience just wants to hear him play. The musician steps onto the stage, unaccustomed to his pressed suit, but leading with his enormous smile. The announcer finishes up: "Ladies and gentlemen, Taylor Eigsti." The crowd erupts with approval as the first song begins, and exclamations of amazement and disbelief filter through the air as people check their programs twice, wondering if what they see is a typo: He's only 14? On his way Contrary to the typical indecisive teenager, Taylor Eigsti has decided on his future: He was meant to play the piano, and plans to make a career of it. The young Menlo Park resident is closer than most get to realizing their dreams; he's an accomplished jazz pianist with a full bill of performances this summer. And he's happy to be in the limelight as long as his concerts don't take too much time away from perfecting his Pac-Man skills and shooting hoops. A natural crowd-pleaser whose maturity and dexterity belie his age, Taylor has garnered glowing praise from mentors and fellow jazz pianists Dave Brubeck and David Benoit (for whom he opened a concert at age 8), and from audiences from here to Hawaii. Phil Markowitz Biography photo:David Coulter Phil Markowitz, six time grant recipient, whose resume reads like a “Who’s Who of Jazz”, is now celebrating his thirty-first year as a jazz performer and composer. Phil has received composition awards from The Howard Foundation, and Chamber Music America-Doris Duke Jazz Project to compose a new suite for orchestra, inspired by artworks of the Abstract Expressionist School entitled: “Abstract Expression- Musical Portraits of American Masters”. With his dynamic piano trio, which he’s been leading for the past ten years, Phil exhibits an unyielding, progressive approach to his compositions, which range from hard cutting chromaticism to the most lyrical expressions of post romantic ballads. He is dedicated to realizing the full potential of improvisational music and the jazz idiom. Phil’s career started while at The Eastman School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. He formed the electric jazz trio “Petrus”, which, in a nationwide search, was selected by jazz impresario George Wien, as the “Best New Jazz Group”, resulting in a performance at the 1973 Newport Jazz Festival at Lincoln Center, in New York. Phil’s past associations with modern and classic masters are well documented in his recording and live credits. There was a four-year tenure with Chet Baker (1979-83), a three and one half year stint with The Mel Lewis Orchestra (1983-86), as well as performing and/or recording with groups led by Joe Chambers, Phil Woods, Miroslav Vitous and Al DiMeola , among others.
