Merwin '48 applied a lifelong habit to a lifelong passion in his recent translation of Dante Alighieri's Purgatorio (Knopf, 2000). As a young man, Merwin befriended the poet Ezra Pound, who suggested he read and translate European medieval poetry. Merwin first tackled some Spanish ballads, only to be tackled by them. "I worked for a couple of years getting nowhere," says Merwin, a poet and translator by trade who majored in English at Princeton. Merwin finally did publish a selection of Spanish ballads in 1961 and followed up with translations of works by writers as diverse as Euripides and Pablo Neruda. But Merwin's reputation rests on his own poetry, for which he won the 1971 Pulitzer Prize. In 1998, he wrote a narrative poem on Hawaii and has taken on ecological causes.

John Singer Sargent American painter c. 1899 The Seattle Art Museum Oil on canvas 101.6 x 60.2 cm (40 x 23 in.) Jpeg: Friend of the JSS Gallery
From there he was introduced to the writer
Marcel Proust and the Count Robert de Montesquiou . The Count took a liking to the young pianist and brought him under his considerable wing of influence. Delafosse's career took off like a rocket and he was performing all over Europe and London playing at such events as a literary feast at Versailles Palace . In 1894 he set to music one of Proust's poem "Mensonges" (Lies) and Proust praised Delafosse over and over in the press. But by 1897 the friendship between Montesquiou and Delafosse came to a sudden and bitter end. As if on a whim Montesquiou cast him off and ridiculed him. The socialites whom had embraced Delafosse before, now shunned him and he found himself without patrons. Even Proust, whom had praised him before, was now openly ridiculing him Sargent, on the other hand, wasn't one to cast off friendships lightly. The date of the painting is an approximate since we know Sargent showed it in Boston in 1899. But even as late of 1902 (again approximately), John had dedicated the watercolor

Frank Lloyd Wright Architecture
Design Style by Robert Green
Architect AIA Frank Lloyd Wright: Marilyn Monroe, Ann Baxter and His Death One of my jobs, for a couple of weeks, was cleaning Mr and Mrs Wright's living room. Cleaning there one day, I saw Mr Wright approach from another part of his quarters. I was standing off to the side and he did not see me. One of the family's grey Weimaraner dogs was lying across the threshold of the opened glass door leading into the living room. Mr Wright stopped an inch or two from the dog and looked down. The dog did not move. Mr Wright then peered up and around, looking to see if anyone could witness what he intended doing. He didn't see me. Then this ninety year old man pulled one leg back, and kicked that dog as hard as he could. The dog let out a yelp and jumped away. I laughed, and then Mr Wright saw me. He smiled and said, "That dog is always in the way, too stupid to move." On the weekends, the time was ours of course. On Saturday night we had a special supper served in the underground theater, after which we saw a first line movie, often before it had hit the theaters. I don't know how this was managed. I remember one night we saw a western, and after the movie Mr Wright stood up and said, with a twinkle in his eye, "Well, boys, a good western needs lots of shooting and horses, great scenery

HICKORY GROVE CHURCH STEEPED IN HISTORY , Lillye Younger From Lillye Younger, People of Action (Decatur County Printers, 1983). Special thanks to Constance Collett and the estate of Lillye Younger for permission to make this web page. Nestled among the giant Hickory shade trees, four miles west of Trenton, stands a lofty landmark, that has deep roots in the County's history. It's almost 119 years old. Hickory Grove Baptist Church, so akin to pioneer churches and school combinations, was "Constituted" in the Jetton School House the fourth Sunday in October 1863. In November 1863, it was named Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Despite the fact that the Civil War was in full swing, the need was seen for a "New Testament Church." The religious pioneers pushed ahead, not knowing whether the building might be destroyed by the enemies, as was homes during these battling days. Matthew Hillsman was selected to serve as Moderator when the church was established, later became pastor, according to the church's history. Those who adopted a declaration of faith and church covenant were listed thus, Mark Clay, Miss Lizzie Harwood, Mrs. Mary M. Harwood, Miss Lavania Hillsman, Benjamin Lyle, Mary Ivie, Daniel E. Jetton, Isaac Jetton, J. W. Jetton, Sr., Miss Nancy Jetton, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Moore, George W. Moore, Mrs. Lennington Moore, Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Wilson, Misa Emma Wright. and Mrs. Violet Wright. This frame building became inadequate and in the late 1920s the present brick structure was built to replace it. At this time Hickory Grove School stood on the grounds near by and during the erection of this building school children played on the church ground at recess and lunch period.

... Graduate Center Robert Alford, an esteemed political sociologist, died Friday, February 14, in New York of pancreatic cancer. He lived in Manhattan, and also maintained a second home in Avery, California. Although 74 years old, the cancer caught him suddenly and unawares in the midst of his very active work as Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the CUNY Graduate Center. Professor Alford was at the time of his death working along with his former student and Canadian scholar Dr. David Peerla on developing a new theory of misinformation, using Enron, other corporate scandals, and contemporary politics to examine what he considered an emerging phenomenon in our society. "On the one hand, more information is now produced and consumed than in any previous era. On the other hand, much of that information is fictitious and fraudulent," he stated in Ideology and the Politics of Information: The Case of Enron , a paper jointly authored with Peerla. "The case of Enron, and subsequent corporate bankruptcies and scandals, is an example of the systematic falsification of information, or (to reverse it) the production of misinformation. What is striking is how little this phenomenon is recognized, let alone explained or theorized, in all of the theories of information that we have examined." He went on to analyze the way in which the crisis in Iraq diverted media attention from the administration’s circumstantial connection to the corporate scandals.

Church Speed, Missouri From "Cooper County Church Sketches" by F. Chesnutt, 1993 The Bethel congregation has been at the corner of South Broadway and Parrish Streets since 1887, The town was then known as New Palestine as it was largely made up of businesses that had moved to be close to the railroad from the original town of Palestine, begun in 1833. The Osage Valley and Southern Kansas Railroad began its operation in the late 1860's shipping passengers and cattle between Boonville and the Pacific Railroad at Tipton. The town of New Palestine changed its name around 1903 to honor Austin Speed, the railroad conductor from 1876 to 1890. The Bethel Church has always been the center of social life in the community. The May Homecoming and Fall Festival are attended by friends and descendants from all over the state. At times the Church sponsored a baseball team.

Concert and PR Photography
The good, the bad, and the brilliant by Carol Wright
I'm no expert, but I have to look at and scan enough musician photographs to know that most of these attempts DON'T WORK. I can almost guarantee that having your best friend snap off a few shots at your live gig won't give you the results you need to put forth a professional image. And your shaded face may look nice and soft in color, but turns to muddy grey in black and white. To get great concert shots, you'll need fast film, fast lenses, andLONG lenses...or easy access to performers. ( Dan Dion uses these: 300mm/2.8, 85mm/1.2, and 80-200mm 2.8 lenses. Steve Marachi says a zoom lens of 70-200/2.8 is a typical concert photography lens. From my experience buying camera equipment, those are very fast lenses for their length. $$$). If you are attempting a studio shot yourself, you can get better results by improvising with additional lights, careful compostion, and a tripod. Best advice I have is to be honest: Can you tell who the musician is, what instrument he or she is playing? Can you see the body distinct from the background? If shot in color, will the image also work in black and white (it's easy to check using a greyscale conversion in PhotoShop or PaintShopPro). One reader suggests using a "black and white viewing filter," aka "monochrome filter," to preview the scene before shooting. This brownish filter will simulate what the shot will look like in black and white. If the location and lighting isn't right, move to a better location. This filter should be available from
