He was a service contractor with the mobile home industry and attended Wray Holiness Baptist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Donna Lynn Royal of Ambrose, Ga.; two sons, Willis Grant Royal of Ambrose, Ga., and Kyle Croyle of Michigan; one daughter, Lauren Whitley Royal of Ambrose, Ga.; parents Milton and Johnnie Royal of Ambrose, Ga.; one sister, Jennifer Royal of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Ronald Gene Royal of Ambrose, Ga.; nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Wray Holiness-Baptist Church in Wray, Ga., with Rev. Ferrell Harper and Rev. Steve Willingham officiating. Special music was as follows: soloist Terry Morgan sang "Beulah Land" and Frances Paulk and June Merritt sang '"Far Away Is a Land" and "Lights of Home," with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. This is an adventurous swinging recording that highlights Marlene’s compositions complimented by a few new editions of standards and two by Cedar Walton. Marlene’s tunes are full of surprises and melodic twists: good use of group unison lines, rhythmic interludes, counterpoint, harmony and fine modern melodies.  The standards (check out the loose bossa approach to Where or When and waltz to 4/4 effect on Lover Man) are treated with freshness that sets them apart and sets a new mood to these tunes.  I'm certain that this music was challenging to play but it’s still very listenable and certainly maintains interest.

Several contemporaries have remarked on her performance of the Brahms Second Piano Concerto while a student. When Sir Henry Wood conducted Gipps's tone poem Knight in Armour at the last night of the 1943 Proms, he signalled the emergence of a talented new voice. Chamber works had already been heard at the Wigmore Hall, and no musician could have had a more rewarding concert when in Birmingham in March 1945 she was soloist in a Glazunov piano concerto and followed it by playing cor anglais in the first performance of her own First Symphony. During the Second World War her life was focused on Birmingham, where, in 1942, she married the clarinettist Robert Baker. In 1944, while he was away on war service, she was a full-time orchestral musician (oboe/cor anglais) in the City of Birmingham Orchestra. During the 1940s Birmingham was an active centre of musical creativity as the conductor George Weldon encouraged local composers and played several big works by Gipps, including two symphonies, violin and piano concertos and various tone poems.
