The Plain Dealer, August 6, 1999 The Washington Post October 16, 2001 There is a rapturous, gorgeously transparent, dreamlike passage in the slow movement of Claude Debussy's String Quartet where a window seems to have closed on everything in the world but a stilled pianissimo suspended just audibly above absolute silence, and a lyrical turn that is not quite melody but sings. The Cavani String Quartet, playing Sunday evening in the intimate Gildenhorn Recital Hall at the University of Maryland's new Clarice Smith Center, got it exactly right the crystalline blend, the prismatic coloration, the inchoate song. The Debussy was preceded in the program by Bartok, and early on it seemed that Bartok's nervous energy had infiltrated the filaments of Debussy's shimmering sonic web; this was large-scale, firmly etched, less atmospheric Debussy than is usually heard. Even so, the performance was rhythmically alert, pointed and spntaneous, and as it moved along Debussy's unique imagery motives subtly tethered but spinning freely and rhapsodically it was acutely delineated. The ferocious contrapuntal rigor of Bartok's Fourth Quartet, its stacks of polytonal chords, its triple- and quadruple-stops, its steel textures, its serrated cross-rhythms, its orchestral sonorities these mean trouble for any string quartet. The Cavani Annie Fullard and Mari Sato, violins; Kirsten Docter, viola; Merry Peckham, cello slammed it home with hair-trigger control and swarming drama.

Again, on Wednesday, it videotaped Meeting in the New Century with the Same Song in the square of the Window of the World, which was broadcast yesterday evening, the last day of this century, marking the coming of 2001 as well as the 21st century. The performers alone number 3,000, indicating the grandeur and expense of the show. Of course, the importance of the timing makes all that worthwhile. Further emphasizing that importance is the participation of all those dazzling stars from Chinese mainland, Taiwan, USA, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. The show was started by a number called The Millennium Bell Tone that features 1,000 primary school students holding candlelights and posing around the central stage and the local orchestra posturing as giving accompaniment to the singers - a six-year-old girl and Mo Hualun, a Chinese American tenor - who were the centre of this first show. Then followed by Jiang Yuheng, a famous singer from Taiwan, and the country's best-known pop singers as Na Ying, Tian Zhen, Liu Huan and over a dozen others. Something in common among the singers is that almost all of them sang old popular songs, both well liked and time-tested. Jiang Yuheng, for example, gave a song entitled Looking Back Again, which was a hit around the late 80's. Despite his kind of husky voice , his performance was very melodious and moving.

Stage Features Yue Opera Festival Schedule Opera troupes and aficionados from Macau, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan, as well as France, England, the United States, Canada and many other countries will soon converge upon Guangzhou to participate in the third session of the Guangzhou International Yue Opera Festival, which runs from November 16-23. Though there's no flame at the opening ceremony, it does take place only once every four years. With 18 acting programs and five concerts, there will be something to fit everyone's schedule and budget. Six traditional and six modern operas will be staged in their entirety, along with four shows composed of excerpts, with most ranging from two to three hours in length. Special performances will be held to open and close the festival. The opening ceremony, due to the large number of VIPs expected to attend, will cost RMB 80 to 250, but other performances will run anywhere from RMB 10 to 50 per ticket. Venues include the Friendship Theater, South Theater, Jiang Nan Theater, Rainbow Art Theater, Guangming Theater and Hai Zhu Theater. Tickets can be purchased at the theaters for single or multiple performances.

International Society A New Name for the Chinese Culture Institute To Welcome the New Century and Meet New Challenges Doris Chu As the century drew to a close last December, the Chinese Culture Institute completed the legal procedure in changing its name to International Society. The new name reflects the scope and nature of the organization's work in recent year much more accurately. CCI's mission during that period was to educate the general public and elevate its understanding and appreciation of Chinese art and culture. As a non-profit organization, CCI has always focused on furthering its mission rather than concerning about monetary issues. The organization was supported by grants and contributions, not by programming revenue. Since its purpose was to promote the public's interest in Chinese art and culture all the programs and activities were carried out in English. CCI started its Education Outreach program in the mid 80s. That program has brought cultural and arts programs to the public schools free of charge. CCI did not seek public funding for that program until several years later. And it became financially straining to the organization. Finally in 1990, CCI's Trustee, Mr. Yo Yo Ma gave a fundraising concert to enable the program to continue. World-class musicians such as pianist Tian Ying and Shu-chin Wang and violinist Wang Zheng Rong (Mira Wang) were among the musicians presented to the schools. The principals and teachers never expected to have such extraordinary artists appearing in their school. They wrote numerous letters to thank CCI for giving them such experiences.

CCYF News Letter Dear Brothers and Sisters Greetings in the Lord! It has been a few months since last newsletter. God has blessed us in many new things. New Staff New staff members were elected this summer. Brother Lan Guan-Yun and Brother Chen Lu-ming are the chairman and vice chairman respectively. All other staff members served prior year remain unchanged except that they assume different responsibilities from what they did before. Shang Min is our new treasurer. We praise God for their willing to serve our fellowship. Please remember them in your prayers that God will give them the strength, wisdom, and courage to lead the Fellowship. Also, staff alone can not do all things, your participation if very important for our fellowship. Goals Our fellowship in the coming year will focus on Bible studies and spiritual growth. We have Bible Overview taught by Min. Li Tai-ying at the first Thursday night every month. We will reach "Leviticus" for the overview next time. Another goal of our fellowship is to reach out to those Chinese students who do not yet know God, by whose grace we have been given the eternal lives. May God equip and use each of us in testifying Jesus and what He has done for us. New Lives God has abundantly blessed our Fellowship. Brothers Zhang Jian-zhou and Chen Lu-ming both found a new job. After Zhang You-sheng, Zeng Chao-ming, Zhang Jian-zhou, Chen Lu-ming, and Zhou Wei bought their new houses, Wei-qiang and Mei "did not want to be left out" and purchased a house as well. Zhu Dan-Jie and Nin Chun are enjoying their parenthood. Their baby, Joshua, is a big boy for his age! Mei quit her job and stays home with her daughter Rebecca. Cui Qing (Zhou Wei's wife) started school and she has classes at Thursday night. Have you ever heard that "marriage can be contagious"? After Brother Le Mei-Liang and Sister Lin Zhen tied the knot, Brother Hu Jun and Sister Diao Zuo-hui "did not want to wait any longer" and got married in September. Shang Min also "wants to join the crowd" and her wedding could be anyday from now.

One reason for the delay is that I feel difficult to write an official newsletter since I have not participated in CCYF gathering lately due to my new job. But something is better than nothing. Staff Election The biggest agenda in this month is CCYF staff election for 7/99-6/00. I praise God that the old CCYF staffs have done such a wonderful job. Guan-Yun has been such a faithful and dedicated Chairman. He has contributed a lot to make our Bible-Study program systematic and set a good example to serve the Lord for young brothers and sisters. Though we hope he can continue, he may not be available next year. May God richly reward him and other staff members as their labor in the Lord is not in vain. We really hope that new persons could step out and stand up to take various positions. We are glad to announce that we have elected a new staff of our Fellowship in 6/22/99 meeting. On the morning of May 18, we visited a mausoleum, the rebuilt tomb of King Guangling in Han Dynasty. The original tomb, more than 27,000 square meters in size, one of the largest ancient tombs in China, was recently discovered during a construction. Now, all the precious archeological artifacts have been moved, with great care, to the present cite for exhibition. The museum was built in the original Han style architecture: graceful and magnificent. The King of Guangling would have been very proud of residing in his new mausoleum. In the evening, the university had a classic concert as a part of the Centennial Celebration: performances by the internationally renowned violinist Mr. Sheng Zhongguo and his Japanese wife, Pianist Lai Tian Yu Zi (Chinese pronunciation). That was an unexpected treat for our ears. The next morning, May 19, Yangzhou University held its official ceremony of the Centennial Celebration. (photo above). Many national and provincial leaders attended the occasion and our delegation was seated in the front rows with other international guests. When the celebration ceremony was over after nearly three hours, the Vice President of the University, Prof. Fang Hongjin, held the official farewell banquet for us along with other VIPs.
