In a U of L class or onstage, pianist Tian Ying is a 'master'
By ANDREW ADLER Jan. 27, 2002
The Courier-Journal Tian Ying worked with Shabnam Cyrus during a master class at the University of Louisville last October.
Photo by PAM SPAULDING The scene was Comstock Concert Hall at the University of Louisville School of Music. The situation was a master class, in which piano students would be selected to play for a few minutes and then be critiqued. The "master" was Tian Ying. Slim, elegantly dressed and possessed of a strikingly serene manner, Ying listened absorbing, analyzing, considering how best to respond and encourage. Often, he had to probe. "I'M A LITTLE LOST in terms of the overall picture," he told one student, speaking in almost a singsong whisper. "The overall picture is very beautiful, but I'm not seeing three dimensions. The most important point is how you think. Try to imagine what the left hand would be doing . . . then the right hand. Then your fingers will be a little more understanding." Ying has been leading these master classes for several seasons, part of a visiting-artist residency underwritten by music school benefactor Margaret Comstock. Over the last decade Ying, 33, has performed with the Louisville Orchestra (under Lawrence Leighton Smith) and played in Louisville in recital.

Note: There's something with human beings - most only treasure what they have only when they have lost, or are going to lose, it. The list below is put here to remind myself of the people I am, or have once been, close to. As many grannies will say, it's for the "old times".
Hwa Chong Junior College String Ensemble 1999/2000 Being the pioneering batch of the present String Ensemble , we put in whatever we had to revive this ECA. Spent a lot of time together, and firm friendships were forged. Even though it's only been about 3 years since we all first met, I feel I've known them forever =) baoz, sj, joyce, eta, aud, zhengyang, yixing, valren, alloy, yichen, weekhoon, johnny, willy, kailing, guanhong, stella and not forgetting jason, thanks for everything. *hugs*
99s26, Hwa Chong Junior College Well, I won't say I'm very close to the class, but there are some of you that I couldn't have done without, people like jiayi, jia'en, vivien, yanni, cheryl and joyce. In a way, the rest of the class contribute to my jc experience, in injecting much needed life into otherwise boring classes as well as planting the idea of pontang-ing school into my head ! And also Mrs Koh, who simply must be the most on Civics Tutor in the entire college =)
