ARTS REVIEW Jane O'Brien-Moran / Orm Kenny A rtbyte on Wednesday, 3rd July featured jazz and blues singer Jane O'Brien-Moran and guitarist Orm Kenny at Nell's Bar on The Quay in the West end cultural quarter. A small pub with lots of ambience and faux leopard skin cushion covers. A theme pub that hasn't got a definite theme. The friendly barman said "We only do sandwiches once a year for Artbyte". It was lashing rain as I struggled down The Quay against the fresh summer breeze. I remembered Jane O'Brien-Moran from the sadly defunct Miss Brown To You. She has a rangy voice that is sultry, smoky and soaring if a little less on this occasion, but the guitar was intrusive and uninspiring. Without intro or a word of welcome, we were into "I am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger". There was a lot of "consulting the list" and we got an Astrid Gilberto set with touches of boss nova and samba. I often wondered what "No Destefinado" means and I'm still none the wiser. When she was in a melodic mood, the vibe was tender, like hearts out of tune, to harmonise two souls in perfect time. By the time we got to Jonie Mitchell, the sun was shining on the white ship at the far dockside. The Chain Songs were more croaky than smoky. But I was won back on track with "Say A Little Prayer For You" and "Love Me Or Leave Me" and when she sang Bill Withers "A Lovely Day", the sun shone in the window and gladdened my heart in the leopard skin (faux) shadows. Ticklish Brother N ow that the City is to twin with St. Johns Newfoundland, we can expect an exchange of bands and styles. Some weeks ago at the Danu concert at the Theatre Royal, the support band was the Prince Edward Island cajun trio Barrachois, with a definite comedy routine and fine instrumental playing as well as sharp dancing.
