Acclaimed for his interpretations of the music of Alexander Scriabin, pianist JOHN BELL YOUNG has performed throughout Europe, America, Asia, South America and the former Soviet Union. He made his American recital debut at Washington's National Gallery of Art in 1976. The following year he performed on the concert series of Christchurch Spitalfields in London, the Koepelzaal in Amsterdam and, in 1983 at the Musee Carnavalet in Paris. Twice endorsed (in 1983 and again in 1990) by Scriabin's daughters Marina Scriabine and Yelena Scriabina Sofronitsky, Mr. Young led the American delegation to the 1992 International Scriabin Festival in Moscow, where he gave his third all-Scriabin recital, in as many years, at the Scriabin Museum. His frequent concert tours of Russia have included appearances at the Riga Philharmonic (Latvia); the Small Hall of the Glinka Capella (Osobnyak Bosse); the Bielosielski-Bielozyerski Palace the Composers' Union in St. Petersburg; and with the Sochi Philharmonic. Underwriting his Russian tours, the Rockefeller Trust for Mutual Understanding and the Pew Charitable Trust (the Fund for Artists at Overseas Festivals) each awarded Mr. Young generous grants.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Pianist John Bell Young Takes An Unusual Musical Journey: To The Himalayas With Hugh Downs, Tolstoi And Scriabin September 1999 Mount Melungtse in the Himalayas Prisms, his new recording on the Americus label, Young once again offers recording premieres of music by celebrated literary and media figures, including Hugh Downs. John Bell Young "I guess I just can’t resist the thrill of the hunt; I‘m a musical archivist at heart," says Young, who is also a prominent critic for several publications, including The American Record Guide Opera News and towerofbabel.com . "There’s a whole world of music out there that represents the contributions of extraordinary individuals. Some of these people are famous in other professions, but that does nothing to compromise their prismatic imaginations, which seem to operate on overtime". With a little help from their mutual friend, the late American folk singer Bill Crofut, Young got in touch with Hugh Downs, whose talents extend well beyond his fame as a television personality. Entrusting him with his scores, Downs gave Young the green light to perform his music in concert in the US and Russia. Eventually a collaboration developed in which Downs lectured and Young performed. "My musical output has been reprehensibly small as I got busier in broadcasting over the years," confesses Downs. "Of course it’s also overwhelmingly likely that I will never be able to do what Bach and Beethoven did!"
