Witold Lutoslawski
Klavierkonzert

Saturday, October 21, 2000 Chinese pianist, 18, wins Chopin contest WARSAW Li Yundi of China won the coveted gold medal yesterday at the 14th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition, the first time the event's top prize has been awarded since 1985. The Chopin competition, held every five years, is devoted entirely to music by the 19th-century Polish composer. Li, 18, beat five other finalists and 98 entrants in all for the gold, which includes a R175000 cash award The judging is so tough that in 1990 and 1995 no performances were deemed good enough for a gold medal. Second place in the Chopin competition was awarded to Ingrid Fliter, 27, of Argentina, and third went to Alexander Kobrin, 20, of Russia. A Chopin prize from Warsaw can open doors to the world's great halls and launch major careers for young pianists. Past winners have included Maurizio Pollini of Italy, Argentina's Martha Argerich, Poland's Krystian Zimerman and Stanislaw Bunin of Russia. A major cultural event in Poland, the Chopin competition sets the world standard for interpreting the virtuoso's complex and highly emotional works. Chopin's music is at the heart of Polish romanticism, evoking for many the country's traditional pastoral landscapes of rolling fields and tree-lined dirt lanes.

Wednesday April 30/03 @ 8:00 pm Chan Shun Concert Hall VRS - Krystian Zimerman HAVE PIANO, WILL TRAVEL. That could well be the slogan of justifiably beloved Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman. His dazzling career was launched when he won the Grand Prix at the 1975 Chopin Competition. Critics praise his "warmth and brilliance" and his ability to reveal music's inner voices and hidden melodies that leave audiences "begging for more." Am expert in building pianos, Zimerman takes his own instrument wherever he travels, allowing him to focus utterly on his music. One of the great pianists of our time, he performs only 50 concerts a year. Don't miss his Vancouver debut. A co-presentation with the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. All Tickets

Robert Schumann Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 63 Clara Schumann was the most iconographic of Romantic figures. Wife of Robert and muse of Brahms, through her precocious talent she helped define the new breed of virtuoso pianist. Although convinced that a woman could never succeed as a composer in her time, she nonetheless wrote music every bit as representative of the Romantic age as that composed by her husband. Tonight her brilliant trio is partnered with that cornerstone of the Romantic repertory, Robert Schumann's Trio in D minor, written one year later. Beethoven's 'Ghost' Trio, the classical model which Robert and Clara inherited and transformed, here completes the programme. Snape 7.30pm (ends approx. 9.15pm)

Chopin Sonata in B minor op 58 next, Krystian Zimerman is a throw-back to another age. Each year he carefully crafts his programmes, whittling down from his repertory the perfect combination of works, deciding just before his concerts what to play. 'Some of them I've only just started and have a few years' more work to do, but other pieces I have played for years - slowly they are becoming ready for performance, and at a certain point, I feel OK, we're ready to risk them in the concert hall.' Do not miss the rare opportunity to hear the distillation of a brilliant musical mind.

His victory at the prestigious international Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York in 2000 has further established his successful international career. “Jumppanen's performance of the Dutilleux Sonata was masterly in its handling of rhythm, color and texture, and in its headstrong, controlled abandon.” The Boston Globe Paavali Jumppanen , along with Catrin Finch on October 30, 2002 and Nicolas Kendall Sponsor: Tickets:

Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major* Valse nobles et sentimentales Krystian Zimerman (piano); Pierre Boulez conducting The Cleveland Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra DG 449 213-2 [55:45] Crotchet
This recording has received rapturous reviews and, indeed, the idea of combining the talents of the virtuoso Zimerman and the one time enfant-terrible composer/conductor, Boulez is intriguing. The result is, as one might expect, electrifying. The sound is first class adding further lustre to a most exciting listening experience. ppp sound from the DG engineers). I always tense up before the start of any performance of the ravishingly beautiful Mozart-like Adagio expecting much and hoping not to be disappointed. Although Zimerman's phrasing and shading is lovely enough, I felt he was a little detached, lacking that expressive poignancy that Michelangeli brought to this most beautiful of Ravel's creations and Boulez's accompaniment might have been that shade warmer. The Concerto for the Left Hand dates from the same period, 1930-31. It was commissioned by the one-handed pianist Paul Wittgenstein. Again the Jazz elements are prominent but this score is much darker more sardonic than its companion G Major Concerto. It is cast in one continuous movement with the Spanish influences of the G Major Concerto much more pronounced. Its more sinister rhythms have been likened to Nazi jackboots but this is essentially a shifting and brilliantly coloured Kaleidoscopic work, by turn quirky, swaggering, brooding and sentimental recalling many of Ravel's previous compositions. This is a supremely confident and bravura performance, powerful and sensitive by turn. Just listen, for instance, to Zimerman's polished and supremely articulate concluding cadenza and the devastating effect of Boulez's crushingly heavy main climax.

Simply put, 1999 was a great year for classical music. And the year's Grammy Awards in classical categories gave ample proof of an abundance of musical riches. Pierre Boulez and Michael Tilson Thomas were classical music's Santanastwo conductors with multiple nominations. But they also reveal how cutting-edge classical Grammy picks are when compared to Grammy's pop fare. Here are some of the top classical winners, along with our thoughts (and, in some cases, our own choices). Classical Album
      Winner:
"Stravinsky: Firebird; The Rite of Spring; Persephone" Michael Tilson Thomas, cond.; San Francisco Symphony Orchestra CD on Sale here!
The success of this record (it actually won Grammys for Best Classical Engineered Album and Best Orchestral Performance, as well) is a testament to Michael Tilson Thomas's creative programming. He wisely chose to include "Persephone," Stravinsky's seldom-heard retelling of the Greek myth, over more ballet music, making this disc a gem for Stravinsky lovers. A winner of Grammys back in 1975 and 1996, the conductor has star appeal and a love for modern works. For the millennial Grammy Awards, you couldn't ask for a more appropriate winner. Our Pick:
      "Mahler: Symphony No. 1"
