Individual, Existential, and Humanistic Psychology Dr. C. George Boeree Although we usually consider Freud the founder of personality psychology, there would be many others to come. First, there would be those who basically followed in his footsteps, like his daugher Anna Freud and her student Erik Erikson, and others who would develop theories not unlike Freud's, such as Carl Jung. Second, there were the Behaviorists like Pavlov and Skinner, who took the point of view that personality was nothing more than the sum total of all our habits. And third, there were many psychologists who fit in neither the Freudian nor the Behaviorist camps, but developed theories that emphasized things like consciousness, free will, social concern, and creativity. In this chapter, we will look at three of those psychologists and their theories: Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology, Existential Psychology as represented by Ludwig Binswanger, and Humanistic Psychology, as represented by Carl Rogers. Alfred Adler Freud had a hard time getting along with his more independent minded colleagues, several of whom left his circle. Over time, these colleagues developed their own theories and therapies, had their own circles and students, and went on to contribute to the field. One of the most influential was Alfred Adler.

Towards a Buddhist Psychotherapy C. George Boeree, Ph.D.
Shippensburg University
What follows is my effort at showing the relevance of Buddhism to western psychotherapy, especially existential therapy. Although it may not sit well with purists, I hope that this article captures the spirit of the Buddha's message.
The Four Noble Truths sound like the basics of any theory with therapeutic roots: 1. Life is suffering . Life is at very least full of suffering, and it can easily be argued that suffering is an inevitable aspect of life. If I have senses, I can feel pain; if I have feelings, I can feel distress; if I have a capacity for love, I will have the capacity for grief. Such is life. Duhkha , the Sanskrit word for suffering, is also translated as stress, anguish, and imperfection. Buddha wanted us to understand suffering as a foundation for improvement. One key to understanding suffering is understanding anitya , which means that all things, including living things, our loved ones, and ourselves, are impermanent. Another key concept is anatman , which means that all things even we have no "soul" or eternal substance. With no substance, nothing stands alone, and no one has a separate existence. We are all interconnected, not just with our human world, but with the universe.

Organization and Requirements: The seminar will examine the psychology of endings. Most concretely, this means we will be reviewing observations, theory, and research on a selected set of specific endings, including those associated with psychotherapy, social interaction, personal relationships, social roles, and life itself. Why would anyone want to do this? For one reason, it seems like it would be valuable to understand the psychology of each of the endings listed above on its own terms. Moreover, an examination of one type of ending may raise questions or highlight insights that are relevant to understanding another type of ending. In fact, according to some views, there is good analytic reason to expect that the psychological characteristics of any particular ending may be related generally to the psychological characteristics of other endings (or at least some prototypic or central endings). Finally, please remember that I would enjoy talking to you about course-related issues outside of class time and invite you to stop by my office to do so.

Jared The best introduction to existential psychology This is the most succinct and authoritative introduction to existential psychology and psychotherapy currently available. It contains a variety of May's pithy and penetrating essays on the subject, including his introductory chapter to the classic collection EXISTENCE (1958) that first conveyed the tenets of European existential analysis across the Atlantic to America. Course Description:
This course explores existential philosophy's principal concepts, texts and thinkers, with an emphasis on their significance for psychological theory and praxis. Course Objectives: (1) This course seeks to impart a firm understanding of existentialism's central concepts, texts and thinkers. (2) This course seeks to explore the significance of existentialism for psychology both theoretically and practically. (3) This course seeks to call the student into a deeper, more powerful appropriation of his or her own existence. Course Requirements: There will be three non-cumulative tests during the semester, each worth one third of the final grade. The dates of these tests will be announced beforehand in class. The tests will consist of a combination of short definition, short answer and essay. While there is no attendance requirement as such for this course, it is imperative that you keep abreast of what's going on. Some reasons for this are: (1) test dates are announced in class, (2) much of the material on the tests will come directly from the class notes and discussions, and (3) half of life is just showing up.

(2) This course seeks to explore the significance of existentialism for psychology both theoretically and practically. (3) This course seeks to call the student into a deeper, more powerful appropriation of his or her own existence. Course Format: To assist you in acquiring an initial fluency in existentialism’s basic ideas and vocabulary, the first several classes will be in lecture-format, but the class will evolve (hopefully quickly) toward seminar-format over the course of the quarter. Hence, your attendance and participation are important. Finally, you should be aware that in order to allow for a more free-form expression of class-interest, there will be some variability in the reading assignments themselves, as well as in their timing. Personality Psychology: Humanistic
SparkNotes: Personality Psychology: Humanistic
excerpt:
If existential psychology rejects sex and death as the fundamental motive forces behind behavior, then why do people act at all? Existential psychology has two answers, one negative, called existential Anxiety, and one positive, called existential freedom.
Existential Anxiety
The negative motivation is as follows: people are afraid of non-existence and meaninglessness. Together these fears are known as existential angst or existential anxiety. Fear of non-existence manifests itself primarily as a fear of danger, death, sickness, and so on, but it goes deeper than all of these. It is not a fear of pain or of loss, but of the end of all possibilities for pain and loss. Fear of meaninglessness is closely related, but independent from fear of non- existence: it is the fear of having no absolute ground on which to stand (psychologically speaking), no overall purpose or direction for life, and no ultimate justification for being. According to existential psychology, it is existential anxiety in one or both of its forms that lie behind manyif not allof our mental problems.
Existential Freedom
The flip-side of existential anxiety is existential freedom. This is the core concept that lies behind ideas of "self-actualization" or "self-discovery"; it is the positive motive force behind behavior in existential and humanistic psychologies. Humans inherently seek to explore their possibilities, to try out ways of being that suit their own goals, ideals, and life circumstances. There is a continuous need, independent of the fear of meaninglessness or death, to become more than one is at any given moment. This very abstract need is reflected concretely in curiosity, extroversion, self- reflection, and a wide variety of other behaviors by which people broaden their horizons. Stagnation, the failure to continue "becoming," is just as much an impediment to mental health as fear of non-existence or fear of meaninglessness.

The birth of modern psychology
The content of psychology (Greek for "knowledge about soul life" ) and psychiatry (Greek for "knowledge about diseases of the soul" ) as such has been known as a knowledge field since Antiquity, yet still not as autonomous academic subjects. At that time, subjects concerning the human soul belonged to theology and philosophy, while subjects concerning human physics belonged to medicine and science. Then as a result of a row of cultural and idea historic factors in Central Europe, and especially in Austria and Germany, modern psychology developed as a separate and self-defined academic area, app. a hundred years ago. When humanistic psychology was taking form - as an independent school within psychological science - in the late 1950's, it explained itself as being "the Third Force" of psychology. To understand this thirdness, I should like to describe the two ways (paradigms), to which humanistic psychology compares itself.
