Many students come into psychology courses with prior beliefs that have been acquired from popular or traditional sources (such as the mass media or religious doctrine)beliefs that often conflict with course material. Although we teachers of psychology would like our students to critically examine such conflicts by looking at the relevant evidence, far too often we find that they fail to do so effectively. A fundamental problem is that students tend to feel certain that their prior beliefs are truea certainty that often is based on inadequate evidence. Thus, if we are to teach our courses properly, we need to facilitate in students both a skeptical attitude and the methodological-reasoning skills that will allow them to examine critically knowledge claims derived from such beliefs. PESTS (Psychologists Educating Students to Think Skeptically) is a scholarly mailing list devoted to an active discussion of effective ways of helping students develop their skepticism by learning to critically examine knowledge claims involving mind and behavior. • More than 4 out of 10 psychologists are self-employed, about 6 times the average for professional workers. A doctoral degree usually is required for employment as a licensed clinical or counseling psychologist. Opportunities for employment in psychology for those with only a bachelor's degree are extremely limited.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Psychologists study the human mind and human behavior. Research psychologists investigate the physical, cognitive, emotional, or social aspects of human behavior. Psychologists in applied fields provide mental health care in hospitals, clinics, schools, or private settings. Like other social scientists, psychologists formulate hypotheses and collect data to test their validity. Research methods vary depending on the topic under study. Psychologists sometimes gather information through controlled laboratory experiments or by administering personality, performance, aptitude, and intelligence tests. Other methods include observation, interviews, questionnaires, clinical studies, and surveys.

Developed by practicing special educators, these revolutionary software packages capture discrete components of the special education process. When used together, the TEAM and IEP components form the QuickWriter Alignment suite. Integrating the components of the IDEA 1997, QuickWriter Alignment offers educators a system for implementing special education that complements the spirit of the re-authorized IDEA. QuickWriter Alignment approaches special education as a start to finish process rather than a series of discreet events, the result of which is a greater relevance of the evaluation to the general curriculum, and the relevance of the resulting IEP.
