This course will provide an introduction to sensation and perception. The first half of the course (weeks 1-5) will cover auditory perception, and will begin with an exploration of the relationship between the physical propoerties of simple tones and the perceptual attributes such as pitch, loudness and location. Coverage will then expand into a consideration of how the auditory system deals with more realistic sounds and sound mixtures. Finally, the perception of simple speech sounds such as vowels and consonants will be examined. The second half of the course (weeks 6-10) will cover visual perception. This will begin by examining how vision has evolved in different animals to allow them to gather important information. We will look at how physiological systems may capture relevant information, and how vision can perform many operations at the same time. We will also consider how complex patterns, such as faces or handwriting, may be recognised.

We'll spend a lot of time talking about hearing and vision, not only because they are the most important and vital of the senses, but because there has been much more research in those areas. We will examine these senses from both an experimental and a physiological point of view. Lecture Class periods will be spent not only lecturing about the most important aspects of each chapter in the book, but hopefully giving you some ideas about current work going on in the field, especially in vision, as well as a number of demonstrations to illustrate points made in class and in the book.
