    Typical for our group is the permanent and strong interaction with many other colleagues from a variety of scientific fields, with variable backgrounds, and in many different countries (USA, Europe, China, Israel,...). The mathematical topics include abstract harmonic analysis, approximation theory, applied mathematics or numerical linear algebra. Among the applications one finds areas such as signal processing, image analysis, geophysics, astronomy, medical imaging, computer science, chemical engineering, pattern recognition and many others. It is certainly not possible to give any exhaustive list of those cooperations. The following table should give an indication of some of the more important connections that have been established and hopefully will gain importance in the future.     Memorial from Volume 4, #2 , of TopCom Ed is well known as a topologist and as an analyst. In fact, much of his work concerned the structure of and analysis on topological algebraic structures like locally compact abelian groups (LCA groups) and topological semigroups. My friend Wis Comfort will report on his work in general topology in an article in a future issue of TopCom. In the early 1950s, Ed turned his attention to various aspects of analysis. One of the most widely referenced results is the Hewitt-Savage Zero-One Law in probability [1955, Theorem 11.3]. It was clear immediately that this was an important result which would appear in most modern probability books. In that paper, they wrote that this result "was commented on by several who saw a prepublication copy of this paper. Blackwell, and Chung and Derman wrote us independently that they had become interested in the following question in connection with forthcoming publications. Is it true that the partial sums of a sequence of identically distributed independent random variables visit an arbitrary Borel set infinitely often with probability either or 1? As they point out, the affirmative answer, which they had already demonstrated in certain cases, is an immediate consequence of Theorem 11.3. Halmos and Doob have shown us direct proofs, both of which make it plain that the theorem is close to and scarcely deeper than the ordinary 0-1 law. These proofs are, with their authors' permission, presented below."

      My research interests lie within functional analysis and harmonic analysis, whose interaction naturally takes place in the framework of Banach and operator algebras. One of my central objectives is to investigate the link between two important branches of modern analysis, one classical, the other pretty young, but mature enough for important applications: abstract harmonic analysis and Banach algebra theory on the one hand, and the theory of operator spaces and completely bounded maps, on the other. The bridge which makes this fruitful interplay possible is provided by representation theory - and this is indeed the place where I spend quite some time walking...

    Browse the MSC Entire MSC2000 in PDF The Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) is used to categorize items covered by the two reviewing databases, Mathematical Reviews (MR) and Zentralblatt MATH (Zbl). The MSC is broken down into over 5,000 two-, three-, and five-digit classfications, each corresponding to a discipline of mathematics (e.g., 11 = Number theory; 11B = Sequences and sets; 11B05 = Density, gaps, topology). The current classification system, 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC2000), is a revision of the 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification, which is the classification that has been used by MR and Zbl since the beginning of 1991. MSC2000 is the result of a collaborative effort by the editors of MR and Zbl to update the classification.     The aim of this meeting was to make it possible for researchers working in the fields of Harmonic Analysis and Global Analysis to meet and discuss some questions of common interests. About twenty talks allowed to cover the principal topics illustrating the recent interactions between these two fields. Different aspects of representation theory were discussed: Schubert cells, unitary representations with reflecion symmetry, gradient operators and Poisson transformations. Another series of talks has been devoted to the systematic use of representation theory in global analysis; in particular on the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand sequences in parabolic geometry, the construction of conformally covariant operators and some refinements of the Kato inequality in Riemannian Geometry. Various presentations ranging from General Relativity to Harmonic Maps, by way of 4-dimensional Geometry/Topology, Seiberg-Witten theory and the Index Theorem in 2-dimensional Hyperbolic Geometry illustrated the diversity of applications of techniques from Harmonic Analysis.
