A significant development over the last 20 years is the role that commutative algebra is taking as a tool for solving problems from a rapidly expanding list of disciplines. In oversimplified terms, the process could be described as follows: Mathematicians with various backgrounds discover ways of encoding information of interest into commutative rings and their modules, then use algebraic concepts, methods, and results to analyze that information efficiently. A famous example of such encoding is the translation of an abstract finite simiplicial complex into an ideal represented by the zeroes of square-free monomials in a set of variables corresponding to the vertices of the simplicial complex. Of course, the existing body of work in commutative algebra is not tailored to suit all new demands. This is precisely where the subject benefits most from the recent surge of external interest, as it receives an influx of novel questions, points of view, and expertise.
Our year-long program will highlight these recent developments and will include the following areas:
Tight closure and characteristic p methods
Toric algebra and geometry
Homological algebra
Representation theory
Singularities and intersection theory
Combinatorics and Grobner bases

Hidden Algebra Homepage Contents A Brief Overview of Hidden Algebra Hidden algebra aims to give a semantics for software engineering, and in particular for concurrent distributed object systems, supporting correctness proofs that are as simple and mechanized as possible. This emphasis on effective proofs rather than semantic models supports taking a calculational approach based on equations , rather than one based on, for example, higher order logic, type theory, denotational semantics, or any particular kind of model or set theory, because equational proofs achieve maximal simplicity and mechanization, while still allowing adequate expressiveness. It is also convenient that the models of a hidden algebraic specification are precisely its possible implementations. Hidden algebra effectively handles the most troubling features of large systems, including concurrency, distribution, nondeterminism, and local states, as well as the usual features of the object paradigm, including classes, subclasses (inheritance), attributes and methods, in addition to logical variables (as in logic programming), abstract data types, generic modules and more generally, the very powerful module system of prameterized programming. Hidden algebra generalizes the process algebra and transition system approaches to include non-monadic operations, so that it can take advantage of equations involving data, parameterized methods and attributes; this extra power can dramatically simplify proofs. Coinduction proof methods appear to be more effective for behavioral properties (including behavioral refinement) than any alternative of which we are aware, and moreover, they can be automated to a very significant degree.

The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra (FTA) states Every polynomial equation of degree n with complex coefficients has n roots in the complex numbers. In fact there are many equivalent formulations: for example that every real polynomial can be expressed as the product of real linear and real quadratic factors. Early studies of equations by al-Khwarizmi (c 800) only allowed positive real roots and the FTA was not relevant. Cardan was the first to realise that one could work with quantities more general than the real numbers. This discovery was made in the course of studying a formula which gave the roots of a cubic equation. The formula when applied to the equation x x + 4 gave an answer involving -121 yet Cardan knew that the equation had x = 4 as a solution. He was able to manipulate with his 'complex numbers' to obtain the right answer yet he in no way understood his own mathematics. Bombelli , in his Algebra , published in 1572, was to produce a proper set of rules for manipulating these 'complex numbers'. Descartes in 1637 says that one can 'imagine' for every equation of degree n n roots but these imagined roots do not correspond to any real quantity.

The Guardian (London) September 29, 2001 In the aftermath of the unconscionable September 11 suicide attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Centre, an American newscaster said: Good and evil rarely manifest themselves as clearly as they did last Tuesday. People who we don't know massacred people who we do. And they did so with contemptuous glee.' Then he broke down and wept. Here's the rub: America is at war against people it doesn't know, because they don't appear much on TV. Before it has properly identified or even begun to comprehend the nature of its enemy, the US government has, in a rush of publicity and embarrassing rhetoric, cobbled together an international coalition against terror', mobilised its army, its air force, its navy and its media, and committed them to battle. Who is America fighting? On September 20, the FBI said that it had doubts about the identities of some of the hijackers. On the same day President George Bush said, We know exactly who these people are and which governments are supporting them.' It sounds as though the president knows something that the FBI and the American public don't. In his September 20 address to the US Congress, President Bush called the enemies of America enemies of freedom'. Americans are asking, Why do they hate us?' ' he said. They hate our freedoms our freedom of religion, our freedom of speech, our freedom to vote and assemble and disagree with each other.' People are being asked to make two leaps of faith here. First, to assume that The Enemy is who the US government says it is, even though it has no substantial evidence to support that claim. And second, to assume that The Enemy's motives are what the US government says they are, and there's nothing to support that either.
