Abstract
The computer language Logo facilitates the teaching of analytic geometry and calculus from the notion of curvature, through its "turtle geometry" facility @cite(AbelsonDiSessa81). We provide some theoretical basis for finding turtle geometry equivalents of familiar curves in analytic geometry, and vice versa, by some simple methods apparently previously unnoticed. In particular, we study turtle geometry programs where the curvature of a line is a trigonometric function of its orientation. 1. Introduction
Recently the computer language Logo has become available for the first time on a wide variety of personal computers @cite(Abelson82,Watt83,Allen83). A distinctive feature of Logo is an emphasis in the graphics package on "turtle geometry", a geometry emphasizing discrete changes to local curvature of curves rather than coordinate systems. Despite its simplicity, turtle geometry is quite powerful, and provides an alternative viewpoint that makes certain mathematical concepts clearer, as discussed in @cite(AbelsonDiSessa81). But an issue not well addressed in @cite(AbelsonDiSessa81) is relationship of curves created by turtle geometry to the familiar ones of analytic geometry. In this paper, thus, we present methods for finding small-step turtle-geometry equivalents (mostly previously unnoticed) for some well-known analytic-geometry curves, and vice versa. This material provides a good exercise for calculus students, while also demonstrating some numerical analysis concepts.

will be December 11, 4:30-7:15 as scheduled. Since GMU opens at noon, the final will take place as scheduled. Final is on Wednesday, December 11, 4:30-7:15, covering: 12.1-7, 13.1-4, 14.1-7, 15.1-4, 15.6-7. Quiz 8 is on November 20, covering 15.3. Test 3 The test on November 13th will cover 14.4-14.7 and 15.1-15.2. Quiz 7 is on November 6, covering 14.6 and 14.7. We have skipped 14.8. Test 2 The test on October 16th will cover all of chapter 13 and 14.1, 14.2, 14.3. Quiz 4 on October 9th will cover 13.4 and 14.1. Test 1 The test is on Wednesday September 18th. It covers sections 12.1-12.5 and 12.7. It is closed book, closed notes; calculators are allowed. QUIZ 1 Since you didn't get to ask about it, many of you may be concerned about the quiz for Monday. Normally, I would postpone it to Wednesday, but that seems inappropriate, since next Wednesday is September 11th. Therefore, the quiz will be take-home, given out at the end of class on Monday, due at the beginning of class on Wednesday (or time stamped in my mailbox before this time). It be the same format as your future quizzes. You can ask questions in class on Monday.
I will announce the following in class on Monday: Normal in class quizzes are closed book, closed notes, but when you do this take home quiz, you may use notes, your textbook, and a calculator. Discussion of the quiz with classmates or anyone else is forbidden.

Teaching Assistant: Description: This is the third quarter of a series on calculus and analytic geometry. The first two quarters, Math 20A and 20B, focussed largely on real valued functions of one variable. In contrast, this course includes the study of vector valued functions and functions of more than one variable (namely, two and three variables). The geometric aspects of the course will include the study of curves and surfaces in two and three dimensions. We shall develop tools for describing and analyzing these geometric objects, including vectors and calculus for functions of several variables. We shall cover most of chapters 9, 11, 12, 13, and Appendix H of the required textbook: Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 3rd Edition, by James Stewart, Brooks/Cole Publishing Company. Homework: Homework will be assigned in class and will be collected weekly at the beginning of each recitation section by your TA. (Recitation sections are on Tuesdays.) Its most common application is in the representation of equations involving two or three variables as curves in two or three dimensions or surfaces in three dimensions. For example, the linear equation ax by c =0 represents a straight line in the xy -plane, and the linear equation ax by cz d =0 represents a plane in space, where a, b, c, and d are constant numbers (coefficients). In this way a geometric problem can be translated into an algebraic problem and the methods of algebra brought to bear on its solution. Conversely, the solution of a problem in algebra, such as finding the roots of an equation or system of equations, can be estimated or sometimes given exactly by geometric means, e.g., plotting curves and surfaces and determining points of intersection.     Analytic Geometry Final Exam (Final Exam for Math 142) Deadline date: Friday August 23 Material covered : sections 7.5-7 and 11.1-5, plus supplementary material on rotation of axes Format : The exam is an online exam, similar to the unit exams. You will have two hours to complete the exam, and it counts 75 points toward your final grade. There are 32 questions, each worth 1, 2, or 3 points. The exam is closed book and closed notes, and you will not be provided with any formulas. You should arrange with your proctor to take the exam by the deadline date above. You may take the exam earlier if you wish. Be sure to arrange for a two hour block of time.
